Their engagement has been announced and most news channels have been expressing their happiness and wishing them well.
Apart from, that is, the BBC News. Their Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchunt did an immediate hatchet job,
She's a divorcee, tut tut tut.
She's mixed race, tut tut tut
She's outspoken, tut tut tut
She's American, comparisons to Wallis Simpson, tut tut tut.
Her parents are divorced, tut tut tut.
She's a beautiful, pleasant young woman and they are very very happy together, but Nicholas forgot to mention that.
-
I wish them every happiness.
Prince Harry is a very fine fellow.
-
I am NOT a Royalist. I congratulate any young couple starting out on their life journey together. However, how many 'ordinary' couples will have a multi-million-pound wedding paid for by us 'the common man' from our taxes?.....especially when they are both extremely wealthy?
-
If previous history is anything to go by there will be economic benefits as well.
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2011/apr/29/royal-wedding-tourism-boost.
And no, I cannot prove any of the figures :)
-
I agree that it will bring in tourism, However, yet again it is the 'Big Bosses' who will make the money, whilst ordinary folks will just bear the cost of security and clean-up operations.
Most dress designers are hardly on the breadline, most restaurant owners the same, and this year, with our economy and our 'disposable income' at it's lowest point (for the majority of people) can we really afford to buy 'Patriotic Nosh' to celebrate the nuptials? I think not!

I would rather a monarchy than a dictatorship like Turkey has, any day of the week. :)

True, very true.
I'm still not a Royalist though. ;)

Turkey has a democratically elected parliament and president. How dare you suggest that it's a dictatorship...
:)

Sorry, JohnF, I forgot that you were his biggest fan! My mistake. ;) ;D

I was guiding a tour in Corfu when Harry sent me a text in relation to a topic he was involved in. I was very impressed and everyone on our coach were very impressed.
-
Orf wiv their 'eads. Bring back Madame Guillotine.
-
I've just heard it summed up very succinctly in 3 words......
ex-soldier marries actress.
Need I say more,
-
What a load of old romantics we have on here! ;)
-
Just my opinion but I think she is the ideal woman for him and will make him happy.I hope that they manage to do a lot for the UK charities too.
-
Will he be looking for paid employment now he plans to marry?
-
With his share from the profits of the Duchy of Cornwall, he has no need to look for a job.
Just another "entitled" young man.

We should get back to the pure British bloodlines for our Royal Family. You know, Germans and Greeks :D
-
Served his country in The Armed Forces.
Heads Together.
Walking with the Wounded.
The Invictus Games.
The guy has clearly never done anything worthwhile.
-
Just watched their interview on BBC 1 - game over - Go Meghan and Harry :)
-
Would never take away his limited service, however it's easy to devote yourself to worthwhile causes when you don't have to put food on the table or pay your rent.

I don't consider myself to be a royalist and I wasn't a Diana fan by any means, in fact I was appalled at the way the massed crowds acted, as if they'd lost a close friend when really they didn't know her at all. However, those two young boys lost a much loved and clearly devoted mother that day and have had to mourn that loss in the public eye for 20 years. Royal or not that can't have been easy.
William seems to be happy and settled with Kate and their young, growing, family. I hope Harry has found someone he can now settle down with and find the same happiness.
-
He seems a good guy so I hope all works out well for them :)
-
Don't get me wrong, he comes across as a decent lad and I wish him and his prospective wife all the best, the same as I'd do for any young couple. But let's reel in the sycophancy etc, they'll never struggle due to his birthright...
Met his (alleged) dad a few times, chip of the old block or what!

JohnF
Please explain why it is that every time I express my admiration for an individual, you accuse me of sycophancy.
-
Go Meghan and Harry :)
I rest my case...

JohnF
the definition of sycophant/sycophancy I googled was.....(of a person or of behaviour) praising people in authority in a way that is not sincere, usually in order to get some advantage from them.
So please explain why you have the right to assert that my genuine admiration for Prince Harry is 1) not sincere and 2) what advantage I am expected from him

If we ditch the Royals and opt for a Presidential system who shall we use for a model.?
Gaddafi
Saddam
Assad
Putin
Erdogan
Trump
Mugabe
I'll stick with the Royals thank you, faults and all, i'll pass on President Corbyn.
-
I much prefer my Google result:
Sycophancy is flattery that is very obedient, or an indication of deference to another, to an excessive or servile degree. Sycophancy is also the fawning behavior of a sycophant; servile flattery. A user of sycophancy, is referred to as a sycophant. The word sycophant has its origin in the legal system of Classical Athens.
If we ditch the Royals and opt for a Presidential system who shall we use for a model.?
Interesting question Kev that maybe deserves a topic all to itself.
You mention two of the (in recent times) Wests bogeymen, Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein, however since they were over thrown/deposed their respective countries have been in turmoil with countless deaths through terrorism/nationalism/anythingism. So many folks have come out and said they preferred they devil they knew rather than state their countries are in now. Its sleepy o'clock for me right now but if anyone wants references or quotes I can add them tomorrow.
The wee fella is a democratically elected prez. I wouldn't vote for him, but a lot of Turks did.
Every Russian I've met (OK, three or four) reckons the even wee'er fella is the man.
I'll give you Trump and Assad, but turn the clock back a few years and that famous Yorkshire politician Ebagum was the flavour of the month until he had a reverse in both his politics and name.
The royals? I think I much prefer that famous TV family to the Germanic custodians of the English throne.

Well I for one wish them all the luck on their future together. Megan is confident, articulate, intelligent lady, who has been involved in many charitable projects. She has bought modernism one step further into the Royal Family, (a few years ago they would have balked at Harry's choice). She is a working actress and is proud of her multi race heritage . Harry cant help his birthright. I am sure if we were born with a silver shovel in our mouths we would be off round the world helping others. Together I think they will do good things. Everyday we hear about mindless a-z celebs getting engaged or married, which is of no interest whatsover to me, so dont understand why so many people are against their announcement. I suppose you are either a Royalist or not..............

As do I, as I said previously in this topic.
I suppose you are either a Royalist or not..............
As someone with Irish catholic roots, I suppose you could put me in the "not" camp. Incidentally, I believe it was only last year that the law (or a rule?) was changed to allow a member of the royal family to marry a catholic...

BBC radio today is wall-to-wall gush. Presenters now discussing whether her formal title on marriage of Princess Henry is compatible with her feminist politics.
-
Well I think it's great
We can forget all the unimportant things happening in the world and concentrate on this toffs wedding
I wonder will his dad attend or will Charles go instead?

No idea where or posted by whom
-
Princess Anne has a Canadian daughter in law,I wonder if it was her who introduced them.I lived near Diana,s home before she was married and some of her relations were red headed,so if the basis of the allegations about her are based on that fact it is pretty weak.
-
"No idea where or posted by whom"
I think you doth protest too much
-
Lol
Couldn't possibly comment

I hope they have a happy, long marriage that enjoys peace from press intrusion, with just a few glimpses to keep my interest. I like him, don't know about her, never watched suits or anything else she has appeared in. He has a good heart and does so much for charities and seems to be have a genuine interest in the less fortunate.
-
Well said Bernie.

Careful Bernie - unless you don't mind being accused of being sycophantic ;) ;) ;)
-
Does anyone think they’ll give to a charity because it has royal patronage?? Would all charity giving cease if they weren’t involved?
These people are multi billionaires, and there are hundreds of people within miles of them going to food banks, and living in shop doorways.
-
Fair point Lindsey
The pathetic truth is there are desperately poor struggljng to get by on benefits- as well as the billionaires in Buck house also on benefits
-
You would think that with the assets they own, cash and properties, that the buck house family would not be eligible for benefits.
-
And I might think they they wouldn't need to hide their wealth in tax havens. But I would be wrong on both benefits and tax havens,
