Title: A Guide to Kayaköy - new book
Post by: Scunner on June 30, 2012, 22:31:16 PM
Many members will know, or at least know the name Jane Akatay - who writes for a number of publications including local ones. Jane has written a new book - "A Guide to Kayaköy" with Dean Livesley. The book also includes a forward by one Louis de Bernieres, who apparently has had some success in getting his stuff published too.

A GUIDE TO KAYAKÖY is divided into three sections – Place, People and Walks, giving the reader diverse insights into the history, memories and walking routes so they can the most of this evocative, atmospheric and unique environment…with contributions from acclaimed writer Louis de Bernières, passionate historian Peter Rogers, Archeologist Petros Mechtidis and academic Despina Damianou, this guide brings this crumbling hillside town back to life, in the imagination, at least.

Here is a short review of the book to give a little idea of the content...

"Jane Akatay & Dean Livesley have produced a perfect treasure with A Guide to Kayaköy, so much more than facts and details; a trove where one is constantly surprised by the next jewel it contains.  This pocket-sized book has something for everyone.  There are historical and architectural facts with references to further reading for those who love to imbibe these features during their travels.  In your imagination you can repopulate the abandoned village of Levissi, by ambling through the ancient streets reading excerpts from Louis de Berniѐres’ Birds Without Wings.  You can gain insight into the lives of current residents through Jane’s conversation with Halil Hoca and pick up further details about life in the valley today.  Dean provides an introduction to the flora and fauna one can expect to see in addition to some breathtaking views and has given details of several walks to help you observe these features, whether you have only a few hours or a full day to give to these activities.  This book is a ‘must have’ if you really want to derive as much pleasure and interest as possible from your visit to Kayaköy."

There is also a local benefit from sales of the book. A donation from each copy sold will be made to FIG on behalf of projects for the Kayaköy First School.

Below is a list of places where the book can be bought. I have suggested to Jane that an outlet in Calis would be useful and she will look into that - if we get one I'll add it later. Good luck to Dean and Jane with the book - I am all for anything that promotes the area and specifically the non-sun and Efes side - the rich history that Fethiye sits surrounded by.

If anyone's going out there in the next few weeks and can bring back a copy for me I'd apreciate it and will pay the UK postage. I'd love to know more about my home.

Hahaha don't blame me if they send you photo messages of their meals while they are there ;D

By the way, from now on we will have the Kaya book in stock but not on display as Doğan has just told me some people have taken it without paying for it.

We have a poster advertising the book so those that are interested can ask and those that know about it already please just ask for a copy.

Also we will continue to have the very popular and original hard back Fethiye Faces and Places photography book which is a great coffee table book and a lovely gift available at just cost price 30TL.

The money for this goes direct to FETAV which is the umbrella organisation that enables the charities like the 3C's and Animal Aid to do the good work they carry out for the benefit of the whole community.

No one will want to take the display copies as these are virtually falling apart with use but I will make sure that I have a couple available in stock for anyone one that wants one and replace when sold. I buy these in and will simply reimburse myself when sold and buy more and replace as necessary.

And finally we do have a limited number of the 3C's calender available at just 5TL

Excellent service; better service than FedEx   ;)  there's been a whole heap of trafficking of items back and forth recently.

Just to let you know too that Faruk Akbaş of Fethiye Faces and Places photography book has just produced a new photography book that includes photos of many more places in Turkey.

He has brought us a signed one last week (which I plan to keep) but I will get one for next year for you all to view and have exact directions to his wife's shop which isn't far where they are for sale or I may get a couple in stock. I don't know how much it is yet.
