The British Consulate has just announced a proposed new law set by the government, granting free permanent residence to British nationals that have completed a full 8-year residency in Turkey.
The British embassy has been working with the Turkish government to develop the new law in the lead up to its implementation in April 2014.
Under the current regulations very few British residents have ever qualified for free permanent residence in Turkey.
But with the new law set to be introduced, if you have lived in Turkey for a consecutive period of 8 years or more you will be granted free permanent residence.

If you have had a residency permit for 8 consecutive years not lived here for 8 consecutive years. There is a subtle difference.

in the eighth year now of residency, so bring it on

Dont think its quite as simple as having an RP for 8 years. I think theres requirements re time spent out of Turkey during that period

Correct Phil. As to cost of it......no indication as yet.

Nothing's free in Turkey.
During the 8 year period I'm pretty sure that you mustn't have been out of Turkey for more than 180 days to qualify ? To qualify you must also be able to show a "reasonable ability to speak and read the Turkish language". Foreigners seeking Turkish citizenship "may also be required to renounce their current citizenship before receiving Turkish citizenship". (Article 11).

Its not Citizenship Alan, it an unending residency. Subtle difference.
This the only info there is at the moment;

Hmmmmmm.............Apparently there's an obligation for men to do military service though and there are other ifs and buts that haven't been clearly answered.
