Title: There's no smoke without fire
Post by: Highlander on May 25, 2014, 22:05:30 PM
Does the fact that what seems like half the cast of series like Quirke smoke, dilute the ban on advertising cigarettes on television.

A very clever marketing ploy.

But presumably Jim, the series wasn't commissioned by Cigarette Companies

It's quite strange Jim - as an ex-smoker (I hope) one of the times I miss cigarettes is when I see someone lighting up on television.

(Self-evidently the one after *** is not applicable :( )

Isn't Quirke set in 1950s Dublin when almost adult smoked anyway ?

I read somewhere last year that the Welsh had banned smoking on set in the film industry. Seems they agree it promotes smoking and have even banned the fake cigs as well.

I must admit that if watching an actor smoking in a film or soap, I find it noticeable, and odd that I do. I was brought up in a house where everyone smoked, and in an era when it was the norm.

I remember when you could smoke upstairs on a bus but you couldn't spit. !!
    The signs said so.

     Bring back spitting I say.

Obviously the Football League are supporting your cause. There's nowt beats the feeling of sliding through a gob of spit, except of course a nice fresh snotter.

Won't do much for the film industry in Wales though will it?

I guess not but they are sticking to their decision.

I guess it is a similar argument to that of swearing, nudity and violence. Producers would say it is necessary to include all of these to add "realism" to the production as they attempt to emulate true life situations and atmosphere. In the case of smoking I probably wouldn't agree, I cant see that excluding it would make it feel less "Real". As for nudity (the female version) I think there simply isn't enough of it!!

Well, you can all shout at me! Stuff and nonsense, in 1950's Europe a blue fug hung in the air in every Cinema, Theatre, Pub etc. So, if you don't show it like it is then yes it detracts from the historical accuracy and drama. I see nothing wrong in it and as en ex-smoker it certainly doesn't make me want to take it up again, more it makes me wonder why I smoked, especially with poor lungs to begin with! I am now as anti smoking as the next person, but I see nothing wrong in the illustration in Quirke, which I thoroughly enjoyed by the way!

I am sure I saw someone smoking in Hinterland? Maybe I was mistaken!
