Title: Istanbul Restaurant Opening Night
Post by: KKOB on April 15, 2015, 17:55:25 PM
Engin Selcuk, owner of The Istanbul Restaurant, would like to invite friends, old and new, to the 2105 re-opening at 6pm on Wednesday 20th May 2015 where they'll be serving-up free food, drink and entertainment.

Sounds good, just for once when there is an opening, or a mushroom festival, we will be over at that time.

Engin has made some improvements over the winter. Much of the grassed area has been paved over and it looks very good, also new paths have been laid.

It's difficult to get a picture off the paved area but this is the best I could do.

Love a run out to the Istanbul for lunch, my favourite time there.  The home made bread is really so good.

How do you rate their breakfast Don? You must have had a few different ones over the winter, which is your favourite?

Hi Lotty,

The Istanbul has been closed all winter and has only started doing meals again this last week.

I'm a bit of a stick in the mud, :( :( I only have a bowl of porridge for breakfast. I don't eat a great deal, a Turkish breakfast would last me a week.

So that's your secret Don! A bowl of porridge every day, well it certainly works for you! I hope you've enjoyed your long winter stay in Kaya? We've enjoyed your photos and posts very much. Your time there must be coming to an end.  :'( We looked at the Istanbul bungalows last year and thought they were a really nice place to stay.   :)

We fly out on Monday 27th April and return 30th October. We plan to stay for 6 months again if we can get new residency permits.

That was my main problem when living out there. I'd have the bowl of porridge and then go for the full Turkish breakfast an hour or so later.

I also have a bowl of porridge every morning (Irish Porridge, don't tell anyone) Love porridge and it really fills you up.  However, like bacon and egg one day at the weekend.
Have a good trip Don, hope you manage to get back in October.

We forgot about it.  When we went for lunch yesterday Engin said he had 350 people there for the Opening Night.   It was a great success.
The party night with free pick up and drop off is now on a Wedneday.   There is a new group playing and Engin says they are better than the old group....So they must be good.   :)

The night was a great success with in excess of 350 people.Engin and his staff worked so hard to make it a good night for all.he doesn't run a pick up service on the opening night party but provides free mezze,BBQ chicken,Kofte and potatoes with as many free soft drinks as you want, obviously alcohol needs to be paid for.the band were quite good and most people seemed to enjoy them, there were also fireworks.
The only problem that I had with the night was the rather large English contingent who arrived, ate the free food, bought little or no alcohol and left once they had eaten their fill. What was more annoying were at least one table of expats that I observed who had brought bottles of spirits in their bags and were topping up their free soft drinks with their duty free whilst eating free food watching free entertainment .Wherever we go in the world we Brits always let ourselves down.
Thanks again to Engin ,Nicky and team for a great night

So, don't go for lunch on a Tuesday as KKOB advised because the coaches may be in.  Also, as we found today, don't go for lunch on a Wednesday as they are getting ready for the BBQ Night and not open for lunch.   However, we were very happy to find the Izela.   :)

The bad news for us.. We went last Wednesday and it was packed.  We were placed on a long table opposite each other with other visitors. Phil  was so far away we could not hear each other as the background music was very loud and I felt quite isolated. The lady next to me was with her friend who was sitting opposite next to Phil.  This lady was not pleased and told me last time they came they sat together and did not like sitting at a table full of strangers.   We did get speaking to the others, but it felt a bit like school dinners all sitting at a long table.  We were also sat behind a big stone pillar so cold not see the group.
Then the mystery guest a arrived a Belly Dancer, who did the usual thing and got men up stripped them to the waist and got them to dance with her.  Then she went around all the tables to the men so they would push money down her bra. Pushed her boobs into Phil's neck and face.
So, sadly, it is goodbye from us to the Istanbul. We used to love it there, but would not go back. I would love to know if the group are on anywhere else in the area as we would travel to see them.  They always are great entertainment.

Shame, that sounds like everything you both hate happening on one night! Maybe one of the ladies would have swopped seats so you could each sit with your partners?  We've never been in the evenings so can't comment really, we much prefer going for a quiet leisurely lunch. (getting old!)   ;)

We only went in the evenings to see the group.   The problem with swapping seats was all had name tags on the places with the food that had been ordered for main course and sweet.  However, seats were swopped at the end of the meal.

Thanks for that, very kind of you.  Where is that?  I have a feeling it is on the prom near Lee's?
Glad to hear they are on somwhere local to us.  I assumed they must play somewhere on a Saturday as the Istanbul changed their night from Saturday to Wednesday.
They use to do three sets at the Istanbul and now only do two because of the belly dancer, which really disappointed us.

The Varil Bar is next door to the Merhaba Restaurant, before you get as far down as Lees Bar.
