We would like to introduce you to three of the 10 students that the Calis Carnival Committee have financed through their first year at University - funded directly as a result of the support and generosity of the many people who attended our various fundraising events during the 2008 Carnival year and the carnival itself.
From left to right they are Huseyin Avci from Yaniklar who is studying at Isparta University to become a teacher of accountancy and computer studies, Ozlem Cetin of Calica who is studying tourism and hotel management at Eskisehir University in Northern Turkey and Selim Arikan of Fethiye who is studying civil engineering at Konya University.
The three delightful students were in Fethiye today and dropped in to our meeting at the FETAV office to say hello and to say thanks for the help given and to give feedback on their achievements during the year.
The other 7
local students are Eralp Cayli, Muhammet Celik, Esra Yildiz, Akin Osmanoglu, Kudret Sappak, Kamil Yildirim and Ismet Toksoz who have all just completed their first year at various universities across Turkey.
Every year many students in the Calis/Fethiye area who are clever and hardworking enough to secure places at universities across Turkey, are unable to take up these places as they come from poor families who do not have the money to support them through their years of study.
Fortunately Fethiye Belediye has a scheme where these students are invited to apply to them for a bursary to cover their university expenses - books, equipment, accommodation, food, transport etc. Suitable students are selected but money for these bursaries is limited and the number of students facing financial hardship far exceeds the funds avaialable.
Last year the Calis Carnival Committee agreed to fund 10 of these bursaries at a cost of 9,000TL. Every month of the academic year we have been paying 1000TL towards these students' expenses.
Following todays meeting it was agreed that the Carnival Committee would continue to support these 10 students through the second year of their studies from the
24,455.55TL raised during the 2009 Carnival year and hopefully, with your support, we will continue with this long-term financial help until the end of their final university year. We must never forget that the future of Turkey lies in the hands of these young people and speaking to these students today, it is clear that it will be in good hands.
The Carnival Committee meeting today was to discuss the distributuion of the funds raised from the 2009 carnival year and a number of other deserving causes were identified. Costings are presently being sought and full details of these causes and costs will be given in due course.
Thanks again for all of your help - it could not be done without you and we hope that you will continue to support us through the 2010 Carnival fundraising year which starts
NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
