I hope your son is OK now, Puma.  What advice did the hospital give him?  Is this in the UK.  I feel sure that drinking more water is the key to Kidney stones, but would be interested to know what the hospital says.

Whist we happily drank the tap water in Calis, we found the water in Uzumlu unpalatable. It appeared to come from the tap with a sort of white residue floating in it. Taste wise , it was fine.
The water available from the public fountains was clear though.
In the end, we used tap water for hot drinks only.
Is there a particular issue in Uzumlu ?

I don't think so in the hot weather I drink at least 3 litres a day, but it is easy to forget to drink enough in the winter, I am a wus and don't like pain so won't risk it again, we use tap water for cooking cleaning teeth ice etc. just don't use it for drinks.

Hi Rindaloo - I have had to be admitted to hospital twice in the last 20 years with kidney stones - as Mark says it can be very painful - the first time the girls in the office said "one minute you were sat at your desk and the next time we looked you were under it!" - I had passed out :-)

Anyway - the second time I was taken in during the night - it tends to be worse when you are lying down - and after passing the stones over the next couple of days I had a consultation and basically the specialist said "you don't drink alcohol, you don't like water or any type of liquid unless you are thirsty? This is self inflicted - in our climate (UK) you must drink a minimum of 6-8 glasses of water per day and in hotter climates one glass of water for every 10 degrees c each day - I.e 100 degrees = 10 glasses of water - if you don't you will be back again!" - hope that helps?  :)

Thanks Ian, that sounds horrendous!!!!  My husband had kidney stones once (and was very lucky that it didn't cause much trouble) and I am certain it was caused by the fact he wasn't drinking enough water.  Luckily it's not recurred.  The main reason I was asking about this is that there seems to be an assumption that the water, here in Turkey, causes kidney stones and leads to the need for dialysis and I am just wondering if the stones are more likely to be caused by people not drinking enough and the dialysis is connected to diabetes causing kidney damage.

If we can learn something that will help with our health, then great.  I know I can be naughty with not drinking enough.  But I do try.

Personally I think - the kidney stones are a different issue to kidney disease. The stones are generally caused by 2 things - a propensity to develop stones in your particular urinary system and not drinking enough water. You can't do anything about the first point - its in the genes :-)  - but you can help yourself by drinking more water.

I think kidney disease and other more serious issues MAY have some connection to minerals / metals in the water if it comes from unfiltered / unregulated sources particularly for those who have not got sufficient immunity in their systems. But who knows........?............?

Sue I dont know if there's an issue with the water in Uzumlu.  I believe that the water comes from the direction of Oren, but would be interested to know if that is right.  What I mean is, I dont think its pumped up from Fethiye.  There is a chrome mine by the road near the Urantas turning on the road out of Uzumlu, heading for Fethiye.  I dont know how far reaching the chrome is in the greater Fethiye area, but found this on the net http://environment.about.com/od/healthenvironment/f/What-Are-The-Health-Risks-Associated-With-Chromium-6.htm  Seems chromium-6 can cause cancer.  But I dont know if the chrome found in the terrain here IS chromium-6.

Thanks Rindaloo. It seems there is enough doubt on here to make me more wary of the water than I was.
If we do a permanent move, we would probably use a mixture of bottled and tap , rather than exclusively tap.
