Best way to phone UK from Turkey?
« on: September 03, 2018, 18:10:33 PM »
Hi I have an elderly Mum and Mum in Law that I like to ring regularly on holiday to check everything is OK. During previous holidays I've always bought a phone card as it's the cheapest way to phone home but in the last few years it's become increasing difficult to find a public card phone that works. I've often spent up to an hour going from phone to phone to find one which works along the front and generally it's only the one at the main junction on the front that works so is very busy and noisy. I've looked at getting a Vodafone SIM only for 30 days for my unlocked smart phone but it looks like they no longer include Turkey in their 'free' roaming.  Anybody any other ideas or suggestions that they found works? Perhaps to get a Turkish SIM card? If so what phone company and from where? Any advice would be much appreciated thanks.

We always use Whatsapp. Once logged on to a bar/hote/restaurant's wifi, it'll cost you nothing.

Thanks but unfortunately both are well into their 80s and don't have either a computer or a smart phone so I have no choice but to phone.  I've tried teaching my MIL to text but she can't even get a grasp of that.

Turkey is still included in Vodafone's Europe list.

Thats strange as when I googled it on the Vodafone website Turkey came under 'red  roaming' which you have to pay extra for but will check in the Vodafone shop next time I am near one. Thanks

I have the same problem, my mum is 94 and don't have any other method of contacting her other than phone. Whatsapp and Messenger are great for daughters and anyone else I might want but not mum!  ;D
I'm on O2 which doesn't include Turkey in it's Europe list. Fortunately OH is with Vodaphone so I use his phone to ring her, it's definitely included in their free roaming.

Thanks for confirming about Vodafone. I'll pop in and see them when I'm next in town.

I got a free vodafone sim on payg and topped it up.i used it to phone uk in june with no problems.
Its 20p a minute and once you have spent a £1 a day every phone call for the rest of the day is free and also you can use the internet.
