If you want to watch movies or uk tv through it you need a jailbroken Apple TV 2. Apple TV three cannot be jail broken and that is the one any shops will sell you

Thanks for that Graham, I'm a bit of a technofobe, what does jail broken mean? I'm going back to UK myself beginning of July so could get one then. I'm just so frustrated I've been here 8 months now and still not found a way of watching UK tv ! I've got a smart tv, and I've got an ipad, but not managed to get anything other than Filmon on my tv, but it's two hours behind and it won't record, so I tend to watch my ipad on the coffee table, and my 32 inch tv sits there redundantly.

Jail broken means you can add movie channels and sports channels plus various others that aren't supported by apple

Not sure what size dish you need to receive Sky tv but a dreambox sat receiver with a hard drive for recording may be the way to go then find a Satalight company that can setup card sharing

Thanks for your help Graham, I'm not really interested in Sky and sports really, just your basic 5 tv channels would be nice, with the ability to record.

That's why I watch from my iPad on its tiny screen. It's the same old tosh whatever sized screen anyway.

Film on is in real time, it appears to be 2 hrs behind because your iPad is picking up your location and setting the programme time to Turkish time.

You can record a programme, if you access the programme guide press the red button on the right and this will set the timer, to access your recording go to the recordings box at the bottom of the tv listings. As long as you are signed into Film on you shouldn't have a problem.

I recorded the Formula 1 qualifying earlier and at the moment i'm watching Britains Got Talent!!!

All sorted! I've now got Apple TV, all set up properly, Bülent came this morning and helped me set it up. If I had known it was this easy and cheap I would have done it ages ago !

Linda, why don't you borrow mine and try it first. I don't use it much simply because I find the most efficient way of watching TV is by having a cable connection between my computer and the modem. Also, there are certain things (Film On for instance) which don't run in the background, this means if you want to watch TV then you can't use your iPad at the same time.

I have Apple tv in the UK and it's great for watching up to date films/live soccer etc. Unfortunately unless your ipad in jailbroken it won't play anything that needs flash - so small screen watching doesn't wlays work as well.

However I have a new toy  :)

Whils still using my Apple TV for films, series and catch up TV I have now bought myself a Google Chromecast:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/audio/digital-media-players/digital-media-players/google-chromecast-22021414-pdt.html?srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~~~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&s_kwcid=AL!3391!3!45236857415!!!g!66754607348!&ef_id=VGuxjQAAAcOTxj5G:20141209123807:s

I find this great for watching live footy through my PC or laptop. I simply log on to my pc/laptop, find a game to watch through wiziwig and then 'cast' it to my lounge TV from my office.

At the moment you can get BBC iplayer on it but not ITV or Ch4. However if you go through filmon or tv catchup then these are 'castable'.

£30 is the retail price but I saw them for £18 on black Friday so shop around.

You can also play youtube and cast all your photo's onto your tv with it.

Not quite as good as Apple TV but much easier to set up and I can get my footy onto my tv in a jiffy.

Stoop if it is an Apple TV 2 you can jail break the Apple TV and then you don't need the ipad

Graham,

My apple tv 2 is already jailbroken. What I am saying is that I can get most of the same stuff - football and TV wise - much faster thgrough my PC or laptop and 'cast' the images to my TV through google chromecast.

Whilst I will still use my apple tv for movies I don't really see the point in booting it up for the football when my PC is much faster at getting it on the big tv.

Unfortunately the ipad does not have flash so many of the football links don't work. If they did I could simply 'cast' them accross as well.

Not saying it's better than apple tv but it's a much easier alternative for those with a decent PC or laptop.
