If you use the foreign exchange in Hisaronu at the entrance of the new shopping centre make sure you get a receipt! The guys in there seem to be short-changing tourists. My wife was nearly short-changed by the quivalent of £70 over a £350 exchange four weeks ago. when confronted they initially said that they charged commission and when we laughed at this they did it correctly and gave us a receipt. Two weeks ago we saw the same thing happening to another lady and had to run after her to tell her. Just be careful.

Its a disgrace H.M. I wonder how many more have been like that lady and ripped off. With all of the publicity about tourists being hassled etc. surely there is a case to report this crew ?

A warning about this place was posted on this Forum some months back.....so why go there?

BE WARNED - they tried to rip us off too, in May this year. I won't bore you with the whole details but it was a deliberate con, and if I hadn't been so alert it would have cost me around £50. They tried the same scam on another person at the same time, but they corrected it when they saw me watching.
I told them exactly what I thought of them, and I will never go in there again.

i think if you change £100 at a time it is very easy to check
the amount time the rate eg 2.65 tl would be 265.00 tl for 100
so they dont diddle you.

Wheteher here or any other exchange I always stick to simple rules
1, Always take a calculator and work out what you should get for their advertised rate
2, Ask them how many Lira you will receive for your money before you hand over your cash
3, Walk out if it's less than what is on your calculator display

It was me who first posted this scam on here warning people way back last May [:(!] the very same establishment !!! What we find is very disappointing is that back then we spent nearly two hours in the offices of the Hisaronu `Tourists complaints department` informing, and complaining to the respective turkish people in there, but obviously we would have been better off talking to a brick wall... they have done nothing !! and they want brits to keep returning to Hisaronu ?? its obviously a `national sport` this con with the money exchange establishments all over the coastal areas..but no good is gained by reporting them :-\
we blew up at them in the exchange place itself , that doesnt work, they just look sheepishly at you and make pathetic excuses.. then you leave their premises.. then the the next brits stroll in, and they work the scam again... you cant win :-\ SO WHEREVER YOU EXCHANGE CASH
JUST BE ON YOUR GAURD AND COUNT THE CASH THEY GIVE YOU IN FRONT OF THEM.... GOOD LUCK !!tw

Hi Sleuth. Did not read your original post on this or we may have not had this in the first place. Doll's advice is best - if you want to change money and not have a scam of this type pulled on you - always change money in £100 quantities whereupon they wont do this. However, Im sure that this has happened to hundreds of people in Hisaronu alone this Summer.

a few years ago one of my daughters friends got charged 25% for the pleasure of exchanging her holiday travellers cheques at a well known fethiye exchange office,i questioned them about it and they refused to pay up. i was so annoyed i stood out side thier shop telling potential customers they were a bunch of robbing b... and redirected them to another place. funnily enough after about five minutes of this action they came out and gave me a full refund.

Just an aside, but on a similar theme....
Make sure that all of the TL notes you get are of good quality - ie not ripped. Shops will not take ripped notes and neither will the banks.
There is a bank in Fethiye that will replace bad notes, but I can't remember it's name.
Obviously the same is true when you are given change.

Ziraat bank will change torn notes for you.It is just a bit further on than Gima/carrefour.

The guy in the clothes store,across the road from Carrefour, down on the left is also into the exchange conning trick.We had friends staying with us who went in there.He tells you one exchange and trys to give you less. It seems you have to watch all the exchange places.

Is'nt this just one another big let down for tourism in Turkey,always ask for the rate, and always ask if there is commission, if there is then leave it and go elsewhere, If you are going on holiday sit for a while at home until you have it off to a T then there wont be any confusion when you do come to change your money.:P

I think it happened to me.
Unfortunately I could not work out if it had or not as I had an excellent bottle of wine before hand.
So tip for the day "Change money when sober :-\"
Second tip for the day don't bore hubby to death trying to work out

Not been on the forum for a while, just read about the exchange place and yes they did the same to one of our friends last august, when he walked out he realised they had short changed him, he went back in and they gave him the rest, will warn all our gang to be careful, good idea about cashing in £100 at a time

The best place to change your money up is the PTT, you'll get the official rate,another genuine place is Oz Gold down the village.Another tip,if you're going into a restaurant with the prices in sterling enquire as to the xchange rate,as a lot of them will give the lowest rate they can.Or better still avoid the ones that are,because technically all prices should be in Lira.

My friends have just been ripped off by the same change office. We were wondering if there was anyone we could complain to about this happening.

Yes there is... but dont bother [:(!] we went into the respective offices at the Beledere in Hisaronu way back in May 2007, and after telling the staff there, and them writing down in detail our complaint about that very exchange office, and their`sleight of hand` con with the Lira on two occasions, and how I `blew` up at the two guys: :) who tried it on there ( see earlier posting of mine June 2007 )
The Beledere has done absolutely nothing about it . They are still there and still `trying it on`
A turkish local told us last May 2007 that the guys who run the exchange rate office at the front of St Nichs shop/ restaurant complex were, in 2006, operating the same con tricks in Marmaris. and have now moved on to Hisaronu. Where obviously they are still `raking it in` and gambling that you wont notice that you have been short changed.
Anyway it seems the Beledere couldnt care less about it [:(!]
They must be making a b****y fortune out of it !!! [:(!]

What may be helpful is (if possible) someone can explain the 'sleight of hand' used - i.e. how the con works - so people can look out for it.

report it to the tourist board in fethiye or report it to the british consolate in fethiye and see what they can do about the prob.because its going yo put people of coming here and thats the last thing the tourist board would want.

Actually Scunn `sleight of hand` is probably the wrong expression.
What they ( and it is anyone of three of them in the exchange office ) rely on is basically ... you not actually counting the lira out in front of them, and just stuffing it in your walet and pocket and walking out.
They usually count out the lira before handing it to you, out of sight below the counter.

Listening to others who have had the same experience as us and the posts on here, for some reason,they try to con the women who go in there more than the men ? ! . Also I would imagine anyone who appears annebriated,or even slightly would be easy prey for them. They cant lose.. because when you confront them and show them you have been short changed... they just say "sorry " and instantly give you the missing lira. But of course 1 out of every 10 people who go in there probably trust them and dont check the lira given to them , and thats what the scumbags rely on [:(!]

I stupidly type English when I was at the ATM and ended up with our own money. :-\
So being completely sober I decided to change money at the exchange place in Hisaronu. I was sure they conned me three years ago.
They guy counted the money out in front of me starting with a fifty and VERY quickly counting the rest.
Not being trustful I stood in the door where he could see me and recounted. There was one fifty, 4 twenties and the rest in tens. Surprise surprise there was twenty short!!!!!!
So I returned and he took the money off me and counted it in front of me slowly.. Guess what there was 5 twenties this time.
I know I did not make a mistake but how do you prove it.

As there are a few exchange shops in Hisaronu which one was it as you said it happened three years ago !

We used this place twice whilst we were over and noticed they do not give a receipt as they do in the Change Offices in Fethiye.
However, the first time we got our money changed at this office the rate in Calis was 2.52 the rate in this place in Hisaronu was 2.58. We did check the money and it was fine. After this we walked up the road and notice the change office just up on the left of the Mosque was giving 2.59. When we were in Fethiye we checked Dikmens change office and then crossed the road to the other one up the one way street. This other office were offering 1 lira more than Dikmens. Moral is shop around if you can, and always double check your money. On reflection I think it's suspicious if an Official Change Office does not give a receipt and perhaps they will catch out the unwary.:-\

Are the places mentioned actually "official" change offices or are they simply privately owned businesses giving that impression.

Didn't think so Scunner. I have seen the search facility being pointed out before so choose to use it to underline the scam has been going on for some time.
I read back the topic and one of the comments you made was how do they do it.
He started with the fifty, which made it more difficult to keep up as he counted. Which was why I decided to check in full view of him.
I had fifty, four twenties and the rest in tens. I separated money out into piles of 100 liras X 2 + 38Tl He then took money off me and shuffled it about and lo and behold there was fiver twenties where before there was only four. Must think we are thick. :o

Something is not adding up here. You exchange £100
At a rate of shall we say 2.50 Means you have 250 TL. You have one 50 TL note which leaves you a balance of 200 TL you then get 4 x twenties i.e.80 TL So the balance is now 120 TL. How can you possibly get piles of 100 TL when the balance is only 120 TL[?][?][?]

I Changed £100 = 258tl
I received 1 x 50 tl
4 x 20 tl
the rest in tens, plus dross.
I put 1 x 50 with five 10s = 100
4 x 20 + 2 x 10 = 100
I was then left with 38 tl which was 20 tl short of what I expected.
He took money from me and put it into a pile with fifty, twenties and tens together and counted it out. That is when the Fifth 20tl note appeared.
Is that ok??????????

Yep, they tried it on with my daughter a few weeks ago when she changed 50 quid.. Luckily my knows the difference between 126TL and 116TL they attempted to give her!!

Heather read my thread under "Banks " my daughter lost 100 lira to a shop in Olu. It seems to be a lesson to us all to count our money and only go to places that give a receipt or places that we know and trust.

The money change office in Hisaronu have two main methods of getting 'extra money' from you (and we have been caught out by both).
They either change at the wrong rate and dont provide a receipt
If you ask for a receipt they try and 'lose' 10 or 20 Lira. They are good at this and even when they count the money in front of you and the money looks right money still goes missing. You should always ask for a recipt and then recount in front of therm. The problem is that very few people do.

I reported them in detail to the Belediye 3 years ago after a massive conrontation with him / them in there. Believe me it got really serious and he was blatantly caught out and exposed by my accurate accusations. The Belediye did absolutely zilch about it... its a hopeless scenario and they just carry on doing it ( as above posts )
All you can do is
boycott them
only change 100
take calculater
take calculater if smaller amounts etc
blow up at him / them
or boycott them.
They prey on people changing cash afternoon / evenings who have been drinking.
Stopping them doing it ? its impossible.

I saw that Jacqui. Such a shame to con a young couple or anybody for that matter. I have always thought of Turkish people as being honest. Plenty threads on here to prove that. Shame that a few people have chosen to line their own pockets and spoil holidaymakers experience.
