If you have a residency permit and you need to attend the Devlet Hospital in Calis, please take your kimlik number with you, this is the number you can get on the web starting with 99. If you don't have that number you will be charged 100 lira administration fee instead of 15 lira. They now have a tourist office in case you need a translator not sure if they charge for this service.

They have had a 'Can we Help You' desk with translators for at least 2 years and they now have a lovely young man called Erdal who used to work at Esnaf working for them as a translator.

I had occasion to use Erdal's services yesterday. Nice young man and very impressed: he accompanied me in to see the Dr and translated for both of us, he kept a check on me during my treatment, brought my prescription with an explanation of everything and told me to go and see him when I return tomorrow morning at 9am when I have to see another Dr.
No charge involved - just a very polite request to spread word of this great new service. Done. :)

I find that if I cough or sneeze all my Turkish relatives want to cart me off to the Devlet - requests for meds from the chemist are met with tuts and a discussion about my need for antibiotics. Have always resisted a visit to the Devlet but you have helped put my mind at rest - won't be going for a sneeze but if I genuinally feel really ill I will make the trip. Thanks so much for the info :-)

My experience with the Devlet:
Just inside the main door on the left hand side is the "tourism office". I arrived at 9am as this is when the staff open up & transfer from the A&E where they are overnight. Register with your name, address etc. & you must have your residency card, kimlik number & your passport. I forgot my passport (didn't actually think I'd need it as I had a kimlik) & was allowed to visit the doc but that was more by luck than judgement I think!
The staff will then take you to the appt desk & make an appt (you jump to the front of the queue with them!) with the specialist of your choice. There is no GP doctor, you have to choose which type of doc you need to see, I wanted the Cardio doc.
Back to the main entrance where you pay (with a kimlik it's currrently 15.5tl), without a kimlik I believe it's substantially more. The tourism helper then takes you to the waiting area for your specified doctor, you have a number which is traceable on a digital board so can see where you are in the queue at anytime. After you have seen the doc (in my case I waited appx 1 hour) then you will be chaperoned to whichever dept you need.
My personal day continued like this. Full examination from a Cardiac specialist who spoke almost perfect English, blood tests, ecg & echocardiagram, all for 68tl. This was done & dusted by 11.30am, I was asked to come back at 2.30pm to discuss the results. Duly arrived back on time, saw the doc again, he wanted 1 further test done which the Devlet didn't have the facility for so I had to go to the Esnaf, the appt was made by the tourism office on my behalf. Quick dolmus ride, treadmill test done (90tl) & back home.
At all times the tourism staff are there to help, they popped back several times whilst I was waiting to see the doc to make sure I was ok & once he had asked for the further tests the lady was with me all the time to make sure I was seen promptly.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the Devlet & the staff to anyone. I have been having some chest pains & to get all the relevant tests & results in 1 day seems unbvelievable to me. Thanksfully they have found nothing wrong so I'll be here to annoy you all for a bit longer!
On a personal note I'd like to thank Fastlady (Janet) for going with me to show me the layout in the first instance, much appreciated.

One thing I don't like is, if you have an X Ray in the morning, you have to return to see the doctor in the afternoon, and the appointment system then doesn't apply. Its every man for himself, with freestyle shoving in as a norm.

I didn't have that problem, the doc told me what time to come back & he saw me spot on time!

We have both had cause to use the Devlet in the six months since May. Me via A & E because I was bitten by a street cat and the hospital decided I needed a course of rabies jabs as well as tetanus jabs.
Mike then went because he was having hearing problems. He saw the doctor on the same day, had various hearing tests, was prescribed medication to take for 2 weeks and requested to go back when the medication was finished for further hearing tests, which he did. Ok, so yes there was a bit of a free for all between having the tests and getting back in to see the doctor but when you consider the waiting list for even an initial consultation in the UK I think a bit of pushing and shoving is neither here nor there!
We couldn't fault the service and attention we received.

When I visited the Devlet, back at the beginning of October, I was almost admitted and the thought filled me with anxiety as I was unsure what to expect as I have no experience of how the inpatient system in Turkey works.
After speaking to several other people, and realising that this was a common feeling amongst other ex-pats, I suggested to the newly formed Tourism Department at the hospital, that maybe they could offer a tour of the various departments to alleviate any fear of the unknown.
Erdal rang me yesterday to say he has just been given the go ahead, from the 'powers that be' at the Hospital to allow small groups to visit on predetermined dates. I have offered to help to co-ordinate this.
If anyone therefore would like to join us on a tour of the outpatient, xray, ICU, inpatient wards etc, and to have any relevant questions answered, please PM me.

I have just returned from our first tour of the Devlet, which was conducted by Erdal, who was very informative and showed us around the Polyclinics, the Emergency Department, the various 'behind the scenes' offices, the Wards and finally, their new MRI scanner. Erdal answered our many questions and I'm sure that, if anyone has any reservations about using the Turkish Health System, their minds would be completely put at rest by joining one of the future tours, which take about an hour.

3 things stuck in my mind after todays tour.
1: 65tl for an MRI scan - that's incredibly cheap for a machine that costs 650,000 euros & requires 2 members of staff to run.
2: 2 machines in the Bio Medical Science dept that do the specialist blood tests cost in excess of £1 million each.
3: They have 2 x 4 bedded rooms/wards exclusively for use by non Turkish citizens & all the staff allocated to those 8 beds will speak a degree of English.
Who says you need to go private to get the best equipment/treatment? In the UK the NHS does a fab job (imho) once you get into the system & bypass the red tape, Turkey is no different & the Tourism Dept will obviously help this process from the beginning.
Having been an outpatient at The Devlet (reported previously on this topic) I'd be happy to use them again for whatever I need in the future, touching wood I won't need them of course!

Thankyou for taking the time to arrange the visit and do the tour, although I did not go it's good to get feedback and know we can vivit the Devlet with confidence, should the need arise.

my wife and i went to the devlet,we went to the touriism office, gave him our residency cards filled in a little,
information sheet, went to another desk,who filed our informtion and gave us kimlet numbers,
i needed my ears syringed, so spent 10 minutes waiting,into see d0ctor, then to nurse ears syringed.
back to doctor he checked, okay, then to pay desk,paid for 2regs. 1 syringe, 27lira[GREAT]had interprator
with us all the time,[ realy good service]

Since posting on various sites, my experience with Fethiye Devlet, and promoting the tours, I have been asked the same questions by several women, including 'does the Devlet have a Well Woman Clinic', 'is it possible to have smear tests done' etc.
After speaking to the Tourism Dept today I am assured that yes, it is possible to get a smear test done there - price (with kimlik number) approx 20tl. Considerably cheaper than returning to the UK for the same thing!

Next hospital tour is this Friday 2nd December with a further one planned for the following week, 9th December.
Due to the nature of the hospital, I have been asked that we keep groups fairly small so please, if anyone does wish to join a tour, please let me know when you are free to attend and how many people.

I had a smear there, went to enquire about having it done, next thing was in the,waiting room.
When you go back for the results you pay a further 30/35 tl for the cytology report.
Unfortunately if there are any abnormalities they dont have facilities there, for colposcopy, a relatively routine procedure in the uk , you have to go to Antalya as no where in Fethiye does it.

Wow - these visits are really taking off. Thank you to everyone who has contacted me. At the moment it looks like I shall have to arrange at least 2 visits per week for the next month or so - fantastic response and I'm sure those people who visit the Devlet will leave feeling much more informed and relaxed about the whole 'state hospital' experience.

hi Rod, Linda - thanks for your emails and sorry haven't replied yet. I'm waiting to hear back from Erdal at the hospital who was hoping to get permission to extend the numbers allowed per visit. At the moment, they are only allowing 5 people but we're hoping we can stretch that to 10. Once I hear from him, I'll get back to you with some dates of future tours.

Did the tour of Devlet Hospital and was pleasantly surprised by Erdal the english speaker, who guided us around the hospital. Although some areas could not be viewed due to being lunch time, he gave good information and the whole experience was very helpful. I would definately consider the Devlet if I experience any health problems that could not be resolved by my local clinic doctor.

Many thanks to everyone who has expressed an interest in doing the tour of the Devlet.
I'm not exactly sure why, or whether this is a permanent closure, and hope for all our sakes it's just a temporary blip as everyone agrees they have been providing an invaluable service. As soon as I can find out more information I'll post on here.
In the meantime, sadly there won't be any more tours.

They had the "Help desk" there when I began to feel really ill in 2010, but it was never staffed, I'm really pleased that they have sorted it out, it was a very worrying and stressful time for me and the language difference made it all the worse.
Well done to the Devlet :)

My hubby went there 4 years ago and the treatment and service was exceptional. Unfortunately tourist visits have been stopped for the time being
