Title: Getting some decent T.V. whilst on holiday
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on June 18, 2012, 07:34:07 AM
We have a dish and used to be able to watch quite a lot of T.V. from around the world and even got the Footie.  Now all we get is a couple of English speaking stations and hundreds of Arab ones.  As we only use our place for holidays (at the moment).  Is  there anything we can get to enable us to watch more T.V. stations?
Hassan has been making more money from us that usual because DVD's are the only thing to watch.   ;)

If you have a laptop or iPad Jacqui sign up to tv catch up
It's actually live tv as opposed to catchup
You will need a proxy or VPN to be able to watch it, like expat shield or similar

Or sign up to uk tv access, it's less than a fiver a month and you can stop start payments anytime you like, so no need to be paying for it when you're to here.

Linda that is ok if you have wireless internet at your house, to do it using a dongle would cost a fortune, also Linda try www.filmon4.com that is very good and free

We moved recently and have Nilesat at our new place (which we had at our other place but we also had a second dish tuned into Turksat). I don't have broadband and use a dongle.

So I had a second dish fitted (cost me 75 TL) supplied and fitted and tuned into Turksat as I knew TRT (the Turkish equivalent of the BBC) had the Euro's on live every night as well as other major events like The Eurovision Song Contest (sad but fun), Tennis, Major Sporting events that Sky have not tied up etc.

Although the commentary is in Turkish they have screened every game and now they are screening 2 simultaneously on TRT1 and TRT3.

I also picked up Carling Cup games on SkyTurk in the winter so for my 75 TL I am very happy   :)   :)

Ps As regards the dongle - I was using the 39 TL a month for 4GB pay as you go package - but I always had some GIG left over so I heard of the 10 GB for 3 months for 79 TL and bought that last month and it is working out  just right for me and 30% cheaper :-)

Another idea is to but one of these and download movies or complete series onto it, we have something similar although ours is a docking station and we use 2 hard drives out of two broken laptops. At the moment my son uses it whilst he is away at college. He has numerous tv series and movies on the hard drive which then goes into the docking station and connects straight to the tv.

Thanks for the replies guys, however, as we only come over for holidays at the moment, we don't have wireless, so it seems to be back to square one.  Will speak to Ufuk in September, but not sure we want to get another dish.

rescan your receiver, you should still be getting a decent number of channels such as the MBC ones with and FX etc.. plus various news channels.

Could someone please explain to me how you re-scan your receiver? I've also lost a few channels and could do with some tv for when I'm out again shortly.

I am not sure that will solve the problem as we have had some heavy wind recently and I know a few people who have had problems including me   :)

I have done a rescan (tends to be slightly different as you would expect with each box) but it didn't cure the problem so tomorrow I am going to my TV man near the sanayi and he will realign the dish (which I am pretty sure is the problem - it has moved slightly in the wind) and I suspect that will cost me 30 TL - which is well worth it.

He has one of these "meters" around his neck as he gets on the roof and tunes the dish to the appropriate satellite (in my case NILESAT) to make sure we are getting the right reception.

In my case just Al Jazeera and Bloomberg and very occasionally BBC are getting a distorted picture for a few minutes and then at other times they are fine so I am sure it is alignment. Interestingly we were in a cafe last night and a chap was telling the owner he had "exactly the same problem as me" and the owner had introduced him to a young lad who went home with him on a scooter and got on the roof to look at the dish. They came back and I overheard the chap say "he has taken the box away and will return it in the morning".

I hope I am wrong but I think this is a realignment problem not a box problem.

If you want I will get the Turkish word for realignment and put it on here but I would only do it with someone who had the meter as without the right tools it must be "trial and error" and prone to be a temporary repair.

The Turkish word for "realignment" is "çanak ( chanak ) ayari" or "anten ayari".

There was an excellent idea on CBF (and I can't quite remember who posted it) but basically they record a large number of UK series (in the UK) using a Freeview+ box (perhaps things they wouldn't normally watch but would do if they had time) then bring the box to Turkey, plug it in and the job's a good un no cables, dishes, nowt - got to be better than BBC Prime or whatever they call it now. You can series record all those old classics like Minder on ITV3 (and Only Fools and Horses on Gold). I thought it was a brilliant idea.

I got an email today with Freeview+ recorder boxes for £40ish - reply if you are interested and I'll try to remember where!!!

O.K. Keith good idea and worth thinking about, only problem is when the footie is on would have to go down to town to watch it.

Freeview + box sounds like an excellent idea, I would be grateful if you could post the name of the supplier Keith.  Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Marggie

No problem - it may be a refurb and it may be a Bush but at £40 you could deal with it if they wanted to take it off you at Dalaman (although I doubt very much they could be bothered to).

Bought my husband both sets.  Father Ted about 10 years ago which he took to Denmark to watch and Still Game at Christmas.  They seem to span the generations, as my son just loves Still Game and has watched the whole set now.

Hi Keith

Thanks for the info.  For these winter nights when we have power cuts, I think this would be the business.  Will record Mrs Brown's Boys - always good for a real belly laugh.

I have known people to bring a well wrapped 23" LCD telly in their luggage without any problems at Dalaman.

If there's a power cut, you won't be watching anything me thinks!

From the replies, I guess that unless you have either a good broadband connection, or a large dish, there is no decent TV in Turkey?

I watch many German channels with and Astra dish. Many of them are HD ( you need an HD receiver ) and the contents is very good. With 3 dishes ( Turksat , Astra , Hotbird ) I receive about 4200 channels in total ( including radio and encrypted ones ).

I bought one of those Cyclone boxes as recommended by Fran on Page 1 of this thread andI have to say it's an impressive bit of kit. It's about the size of a fag packet and you can get them with different capacities up to 32Gb but the best thing is that you can extend the internal capacity by connecting an external memory stick (32Gb from Maplins for £14.99). On a 32Gb stick you can get around 30 films or 60 TV episodes (depending on the individual file size obviously). Just connect it to the TV by the supplied HDMI cable and away you go. There are any number of "free to use" sites for downloading films - I use icefilms for TV and films and YouTube for downloading music vids. I'm taking it over with me on Sunday but no bubblewrap required - it will fit in my jacket pocket.  :D
