In a weak moment, we booked a whole week in an Uzumlu villa towards the end of July. Whilst its a beautiful place, we are not sure what there is to do there apart from chilling out. Any suggestions would be welcome.
itinary so far (We will be transferring from 2 weeks in calis, so don't plan any return trips there)
Trip to the barbers
Walk around the village
Walk the other way round the village
Take a trip on the Dolmus to its terminus
Come back
People watch(We once sat outside the wine house for about two hours and saw only 4 people pass by)
Trek to the old ruins
At least two early morning walks
Visit the craft shop
See if I can get Sue trained in using a loom
Eat cake
And just generally chill out
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hugh (Sue is bringing her needle felting stuff so that will keep her happy for a bit)

Excellent - my path needs weeding, details to follow....
-
Ok Scorcher, I will add that to the list
Sue likes gardening
-
There may be some grass growing that needs to be watched but at that time of the year it is unlikely that there will be any paint that needs to be observed whilst it is drying.
-
If I see grass growing, I get an incredible urge to get the lawnmower out for Sue.
Don't think I have ever watched paint dry, as I tend to nod off whilst watching Sue paint. its very relaxing

:)As a devotee of Uzumlu, I can tell you that there is loads to do. We have a wide selection of restaurants, some offering a variety of events from quizzes, a weekly one at the Winehouse called the fun quiz on Tuesdays, another one monthly I think (details of which can be read in the Uzumlu village news, which highlights some but not all events in the village). Live music again at the Winehouse with talented musicians. A secret garden restaurant called Selale (Turkish for waterfall) which serves the most delicious Elma Pide which is close to Apple strudel, this has a real Turkish feel to it, and the owners make you feel like part of their family. There are book exchanges at all the restaurants. It is possible to eat out every night at a different venue, and a lovely cake shop for afternoon tea too. There are craft classes making jewelry, a knitting group, a charity group, a weekly market, loads of walks you can do up to Cadianda the ruins above the village. Horseriding can be arranged, Many charity events organised at various locations. You are sure to be inundated with other suggestions, these are just some to wet your appetite. People watching is a bit busier these days, but I guess in the heat of the day most people are inside or by their pools keeping cool during the day.Happy holiday

What to do in Uzumlu for a whole week

We've not been to Uzumlu yet but are planning a trip up next month on market day.
How does the market compare in size to Ciflik??
We are considering getting the Dolmus there and walking back. Is this feasible??
-
Don't get Scunner started on Ciftlik!!! ;D
-
Sleep and more sleep.
-
Angela, unless you have a fruit & veg fetish then to be honest the market is not worth coming all the way to Uzumlu for as those stalls take up 80 percent of the 15-20 stalls. The others being hardware and clothes. If you are coming up then make it for a day of musing and yes there are many places to eat should you so wish, in addition to those 2 preferred by Rosy.

Hmmm! Walking from Uzumlu! Let's put it this way Angela, it's 20km from the village down to the Antayla/Dalaman road & you want to do that in the scorching heat of a July day?
You will need to prepare well for that one :-\
1st, buy a book on desert survival.
2nd, make sure your wills are up to date.
3rd, say your last goodbyes.
Or, catch the Dolmus and forget the above.
There is a good side to walking down the hill in July/ August though, the Tarmac melts and by the time you have walked it you could be 4 inches taller! 8)

Angela and I trek 20+km every day when we are in Calis in late June and early Sept
(am trekking pm beach :) )
I'm not sure that we'd attempt it on the hotter days in July and August though 8) 8) 8)

In July I would recommend bringing plenty of reading matter then after a leisurely breakfast on your terrace do what most people in the area do, put up the shade, pull out the sunbed and chill with breaks for the frequent excursions into the pool... ;D
After dusk then potter up to one of the many restaurants to drink and eat outside in the gardens.
That would be my perfect week in Uzumlu or anywhere else at the end of July

Hi kevin-Yes we also walk, rather than trek in Calis, but tend to early morning as its too too hot in July. Usually around 6.30 am for a couple of hours. Builds up an appetite for those wonderful Turkish breakfasts.
Trouble with Uzumlu are the gradients. But with frequent stopping and loads of water, its still doable

Eh ! Go on, what am I doing wrong

Am I really that sarcastic? :)
It was perfect, using quotes to indicate which person you were replying to each time. Too many people use it to quote the last 8 comments, even though above their reply is the last 8 comments ;)

Yes , you are usually that sarcastic , But this is fun as its provoking and gets more people posting. I now waiting for your comment re Ciftlik. I have my own, but havnt got your broad shoulders.
-
I'm not sure I have an opinion on Ciftlik :D

not sure when the craft classes are, I go to a knitting group once a fortnight first and third Tuesday of the month at the OLIVE Garden, known locally as the round house, on the D and an art group on Thursdays at the Nayla restaurant on Fethiye harbour. There is a jewelry making group details of which are probably in the Uzumlu Village news, but the lady in the new craft/gift shop next to the bakers could also tell you more. the shop itself is always worth a browse. There is a ceramic painting course at the Cultural centre which sounds excellent too.
-
Aah, Uzumlu, I spent a fortnight there one day !! ;) 8)
-
Sounds more like a W. I. haven to me. ;)
-
just responding to the original question. Not an advert for W.I. as suggested. Enjoying crafts was mentioned and so details of the varied activities was given.
I am afraid you will have to make your own jam and cakes unless you want to buy preserves from the local women who sell them alongside their amazing shawls, tablecloths, scarves and jewelry. As already mentioned there is a pastry shop in the square where you can buy cakes.
just keep reading the CBF which advertises all local events as and when they are due to happen. Things change frequently so worth checking the forum first. :)

Can I say thanks to all contributors to "What to do in Uzumlu"
Cheers to Rosy on your suggestions as Sue is very much a "Crafty" type person.
I will modify our to do itinery.
Still not sure to do with the other six days though

Hi
I am out end of July and have the week planned once again
The public transport is cheap and reliable and fun.
If you are going out on own then once in Fethiye you can go anywhere.
Lots to do within one hour bus ride. Check out full details on travel web sites
Or just relax and enjoy
You will have a great time
