Title: Exchange rates
Post by: DonM on November 05, 2013, 15:40:08 PM
Been here about a week now, we use the plastic (credit card) for most purchases and have just checked we have got an exchange rate of TL3.19. So things are looking good.

If anybody is interested we get our pounds sterling from the ATM at the HSBC with our debit card, there are no charges/fees for the transaction. We then get our lira through the money changers. We don't have a Turkish bank account. This cuts out charges/fees you get if you draw Lira with a debit card

Euros are also available at HSBC. I assume other banks also have ATM's where £'s and €'s are available.

You are doing the right thing Don with regards to HSBC, but when you,ve got your sterling take it next door to sekur bank, next to Beko electric shop and change it to lira, you don't need a bank account  just your passport, and you will get a better exchange rate than the change shops.  ;)

Hi Don, Is it a uk debit card, if so I would have thought your uk bank would charge a transaction fee, but I may be wrong.

I've been using a UK (Barclays) debit card to draw pounds sterling from the HSBC in Fethiye for the last 4 years and have never been charged any fees. Having said that sods law being what it is I could get charged the next time I use it.

Nationwide only charge if you draw lira or euros.  No charge for Sterling, as we often draw it with our card.

I don't have a Nationwide card and apparently they do charge for foreign withdrawals from newer accounts. It seems they might be trying to phase this little perk out. 8)

Nationwide stopped allowing ALL members, new and old, from drawing foreign currency free of charge a few years ago.  So no phasing out. However, it's easy to draw out Sterling from A.T.M's without charges and change it into Lira at the Banks/Change Shops.

Yes, we discovered that little trick last time we were there.  We drew sterling out on our Santander card and on our NatWest card at different times with no charge.  Exchanged it to lira in the currency exchange place round the corner from Mosaik Bahce at a really good rate.  Fab! ;D
