Chatting today with a pal about our first cars.
Mine was a 1963 Triumph Herald Coupe - bought in 1971 for £45.00.
I hadn't passsed my test but a mate was selling it "for a song".
It died - and after passing my test in 1973 I bought my Dad's Vauxhall Victor for £60.00.
Best car I ever had........

British racing green 1957 Morris 1000, GEN 722. Was the first year without the split windscreen but it still had the trafficator arms that popped out of the door pillar. At least until I disabled them and added flashers front and back. It was my dad's, my older brother's and then mine.

A red old style mini that used to die on me for about half an hour if I drove through any deep puddles. When I see them now they look so small and wonder how my 6ft 7in ex even got in the damn thing.
-
As a favour to my then girlfriend I took her " red old style mini" through a car wash. It had the sliding windows (no window winder) through which all the water poured.
I was eventually forgiven but the uphostery never lost that dank odour.

Ford Escort - it didn't end well :o

A souped up Mini. White with black roof. Wide wheels, big bore exhaust. Jumped out of fourth gear. Bonnet latch dodgy and bonnet would fly up randomly.
Bought it for £75 and ran it a couple of years. Sold it for £35 but the alternator went the day he was due to collect it so I knocked him £2.50 off. He fixed the gears for a fiver as it was a simple link.

My first car that I actually owned was a tiny little Fiat 500. It must have been one of the smallest cars ever produced but once I had five people and camping equipment in it that we went camping with for a weekend in Norfolk. :)Thankfully the weather must have been good!

Wow-Spotted a classic Lotus Cortina for sale on the web £90.000!
Doubt it is a standard model as there was another one for a bargain £42,000 :)

I bought an old mini 850 as a first car at 16, completely re built it and fitted a cooper engine, big exhaust, roll cage etc ready for when I passed my test at 17. Then did it all again with a Triumph Spitfire. Wish I had bought a couple of Mk 1 escorts and stashed them away they are worth a fortune now.

I learned to drive in 1988 in a 1967 Triumph Herald. Still got it but it is passed its best so it will be broken as a organ donor for my other 1964 Triumph Herald.
-
I had a Herald of that vintage. It had an interesting habit of "tramping" - i.e. when you pushed it a bit fast through corners the back end would break away and jump across the road, in one or two bounds, for a couple of feet in an attempt to escape the corner. Quite invigorating.
-
Dad had a 67 Herald that some stupid woman driver wrote off whilst I was driving it. She turned right at a no right turn junction as I was going through it in the opposite direction. She even had the audacity to say it wasn't her fault and it went to court. As I was about to go in to give evidence she changed her plea to guilty.
Nice car - no sinc in first though.
-
Love the stories that go with the first cars.
Bashes, crashes and unreliable motors - the golden age of my driving years.

Triumph Herald shows off its cornering abilities.

My first was a Singer Gazelle and then a Humber Hawk. The Hawk was a Petrol guzzler but wow the comfort. It also had overdrive which was like an extra half gear, when you flipped it on you could fairly feel the car surge.

When I was at school I had a Morris ex GPO van that I used to run around in (illegally).
My first proper car was a 1947 Vauxhall Wyvern, metallic green with bench seats and column change. A garage owner wanted
me to give up Motor bikes saying they were dangerous. I said I couldn't afford a car so he showed me the Wyvern and said if
you could afford it would you give up the bikes? I said yes and he sold me this one owner car for £ 4. I kept it for nearly a year
and sold it to my mate for £ 8. We still meet up and he still jokes that I ripped him off.!!!
