Title: Any Ex Squaddies?
Post by: Jules1 on November 08, 2005, 16:27:44 PM
Hi everyone

I't s me again!   Was just wondering if there are any ex-squaddies in Calis, or Turkey in general?
Forgot to mention in my intro but my hubby is in the army and will be finishing his 22 year service in 18 months time!  (yes it did feel like a prison sentence!)   He is posted to Ludgershall nr Andover at the moment so I only get the pleasure of his company at weekends, so am left sorting out all this house buying stuff on my own, well life's a beach!!!

He reckons we could live well in Turkey on his pension and judging by what I've read on here I think he may be right.   Was just wondering if there are any other ex squaddies on here and if they agree?

take care
Julie

Hi Julie,
My husband is also an ex squaddie, did 24 years - 18 yrs in the Royal Artillery & 6 years with the MPSC (Glasshouse in Colchester). He has been out for 11 years now and I think pensions must have improved recently as there is no way that we could live off his pension. However, in about 3 years when he hits 55 it will increase and we are hoping that together with our civil service pensions we may just be able to afford it.
It didn't feel like a prison sentence but I certainly didn't enjoy all the times when he was away and I was left with the 4 kids and had to organise the packing, painting and cleaning for the next move! Good luck with the house buying.
Chris

Hi, I served for seven years in the Artillery. Been out over twenty years now, but still keep in touch with many old comrades, and attend reunions every couple of years to see the old mates.

Mark.

Don't know Julie, I only did a few years myself before I got out, but somewhere on this forum there is a topic that talks about the fact that apparently you can live comfortably on £100 per week.

Me, I'm between Fethiye and Calis

My husband is in the RLC and will finish his 22yrs in 2 yrs from now. We have an apartment in Hisaronu and are thinking about retiring to turkey when he is 55, don't think the pension would be enough until then!

Hi Irnbru
Is that Scottish Iron Brew made from Girders???  lol
If you can answer that question you must be as old as me, but then I guess if you are retired from the army you must be!
I dont' think there is a particular area that ex-squaddies live in Turkey, although their appears to be ex-pat area's all over the place.   Hisaronou and Calis seem to have a good population of ex-pats and possibly Ovacik, though not sure about other places in Turkey.
I suppose it's just a case of exploring different area's and finding one that suits you.
When are you thinking of moving out?   It will be at least 2 years for us yet because son is still in School.   From what I have heard on here you could live very comfortably on £690 a month for a couple.
Our place is in Calis.
Good luck in finding the right place.
