Bl**dy Skype / Tablets
« on: May 25, 2014, 19:37:17 PM »
We were having a nice relaxing Sunday Lunch when the couple on the table across from us decide to call home - via Skype - no headphones - so we sit and listen to both sides of the conversation for over  30 mins.

Now I know some like to use the free wi-fi to call home - but please be a little bit more considerate.

I don't like mobile phones in restaurants and this is worse as the person speaking "at a tablet" seems to think they have to raise their voice and we get the pleasure of hearing the answers as well if they are not using headphones - sorry but it is just plain IGNORANT! Rant over...............

I suggest cutlery. A table fork is good. Through the screen.

Yeah, or walking past and accidently spilling your drink on it.

I do understand the need to ring home - but it really did spoil the end of a lovely meal when people do it like this - just bring out your headphones next time - they will be in the box somewhere !!!

Just start playing music on your phone/tablet. When they say "Do you mind not doing that, I'm making a call", say "Would you mind not making a call, I'm trying to listen to music" :D

Easy remedy there Ian, shift tables, a lot of people on holiday like to talk to family back home on hols, myself included but i always go outside on the prom as the conversation is personal, cant really see anything wrong with doing it in bar or eating place.

Easy remedy there Ian, shift tables,

Not very fair - and not very practical - it's about being considerate - I can cope with a quiet call - I just don't want to hear all of it and the replies and see the person at the other end as well   ;)

I can see your point Ian but where does it stop? What if four people on the next table are talking loud after a few drinks? If you listen you can probably hear the full conversation.

We tend to just try and ignore any noise from the next table and carry on as normal. If we have to speak louder to hear each other then so be it - a bit like a busy pub really.

And yes we do occasionally FaceTime friends and family when we are in a restaurant/bar but we tend to keep the conversation at a normal noise level. No need to shout unless the next table is too noisy  ;)

But would you do it in a restaurant in the UK?

I have it down as the same as the person in front putting their seat back when you are all crammed into your limited space.

Maybe I am getting Grumpy in my old age   ;)

It's a little different when you are on your hols Ian. Most people only do it in restaurants abroad because they don't have broadband in their hotel or apartment. Not so in the UK really.

As for reclining seats - fortunately many budget airlines are fitting non- recliners now for short haul flights. I agree it's annoying when it happens though.

Grumpy? Nah  ;)
