Did you know it was St Georges Day?
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:00:55 AM »
Funny thing I noticed yesterday. Over the last month or so I have visited a local pub that is part of a major chain and have seen the "show" put on for Paddy's Day and similar for St David's Day, dragon burger etc

Yesterday evening I popped in with a friend and was suppries that there was nothing to indicate that it was St George's Day, not a single flag or anything......oh except a St George & Dragon ale.

I might add that this is in Greater London.

What does this say to you?

Yes, and half Palestinian (by parentage) and born in Palestine.

I always remember St. George's Day, it's my birthday  :)

According to Wiki, both his parents were Greek - his father from Cappadocia; and his mother from the Greek city of Lydda in Palestine. It further says that he was an officer in the Roman army. The nationality of the dragon is not known.

In my town the displaying of the St Georges cross was banned as it may be offensive to our Muslim and Polish bretheren !Unfortunately I think people take in water because of the association with far right groups,I think in a democracy we should be able to celebrate without offending.Tell an irishman he cant celebrate Paddys day !

Are you talking about South Shields, Steve? If the flag of St George is banned there how come the local council was criticized for not flying it at half mast for Mrs T funeral - because it was still flying proudly at the top of the flag pole? "The flag of St George is flown above South Shields Town Hall every day of the year" (SouthTyneside.info, 23 April 2013). Are you sure you haven't fallen for an urban myth?
