Scotland: Holiday Tomorrow
« on: May 25, 2014, 11:51:09 AM »
My daughter, who now lives in Edinburgh, tells me that she starts her new job tomorrow. I pointed out that most people will be having a Bank Holiday. She replied that it wasn't a holiday in Scotland. Well it is according to the UK Government and the Scottish Government. But what do they know? I'm sure CBF members up there are far more informative (if not necessarily reliable - this added in case KKOB offers advice).

A lot of companies, like my husband's don't have the Bank Holidays.  They just lump the Bank Holiday in with the holiday entitlement for the year.

Not only are Scotland's bank holidays different to England's, but different parts of Scotland have different bank holidays to each other. But my understanding is that Monday is one. But the kids are at School?

Ah, YKK-OB. Thanks folks. So we might both be right then. It is a holiday but she still has to work.

Q. Is everyone entitled to a holiday on the bank holiday dates?

A. No. Bank holidays, as with other pay and conditions of service issues, are a contractual matter between employer and employees. The law does not give statutory rights to time off on bank holidays or to extra pay. This has always been the case. Employees should check the position with their employer if they are in doubt.

The schools in Glasgow finished up on Thursday and go back on Tuesday.  The banks are closed tomorrow AND some banks take the English & Scottish bank holidays.  I tried to contact a solicitor's office on Friday and they had taken Friday as a holiday as well as Monday.
