travelers cheques
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:58:25 AM »
I have just been to the bank to get some travelers cheques for my forthcoming holiday in Calis and the teller told me that customers were voicing concern about some places in various countries would not take travelers cheques. We did find that in Tenerife earlier on in the year.Is there any reluctance in shops in Calis to do likewise.

I don't think may people use travellers cheques these days, they are becoming a thing of the past.  I cannot think of anyone I know that uses them.   I remember my daughter and I taking them to New York years ago and we struggled to find a Bank that would change them.
Most people bring Sterling with them and then change it in Turkey at a good rate.  If you have a Nationwide Account you can draw out Sterling free of charge.. but only Sterling they will make a charge for any other currency, you can then change the Sterling into Lira.
I am sure you may be able to change Traveller Cheques, but perhaps you will need to use a Bank in Fethiye. : :)

Thanks for your reply Jacqui. As the apartment we use does not have a safe I dont fancy having a lot of sterling on me or in the apartment. We were the victims of an ATM scam in Fethiye two years ago and it makes us wary using a card. When in Calis last year twice we didnt find a problem using cheques in the jeweller up from the Mangal. (This may have changed)Do you know if the change shops in Fethiye will take them. Two weeks to go Cant Wait.

A small portable safe ?   ;)

Never had a problem changing cheques at Zumrut (the jeweller up from Mangal).

If you use the same apartment or you own the apartment just get a safe.  They don't cost that much and it would solve your problem.
Alternatively, open a Nationwide account.  We did this specifically to have money when we were in Calis. Each time we are due to go over we just transfer the money from our Bank into the Nationwide Account.
Use the banks in Fethiye that have guards.
