Title: Car dump at Dalaman
Post by: Eric on October 23, 2007, 17:58:47 PM
Well the 6 months were up and it was not worth the cost and time of taking the old Mazda back to the UK.:(
Off we went to Dalaman Gumruk (Customs) today arriving at 2.25pm.
Managed to make ourselves understood and after handing in the Customs entry form we received on arrival, the log book and my passport we sat and waited. A little while later I signed a form waiving my rights to the car. 45 mins later after many people looking at the papers and a PC the main man came in, took us to look over the car, record the chassis etc etc.
Then 15 mins later I got my passport back with the car removed and I drove it into the compound :( and left the airport :D.
All in all, only 1hr 30 mins, painless, no money required & no real Turkish language skills needed.
Did not even need to use my translator who was on standby at the end of his phone.
Guess it was our lucky day.:D[^]

Fi & Eric

i wonder if anyone has had any recent dealings with the Dalaman customs compound, that can tell me if the method Eric used is still valid.
i came over last month with a UK registered van, with the intentions of returning to UK next month, but considering how little the van will be worth and the costs in driving back i am considering just getting shot of it.
Appreciate any help.

We bought our car over last year, have had it extended for another 6 months, due to leave at end of March but we managed to sell it to someone who wants to move back to UK so it is possible

Cheers for that info walker9 - how dificult was it to get the paperwork sorted out especially the removal of the vehicle from your passport

We will have to go with the buyer to the border so that it can be removed from my husbands passport, we will then get bus back to Fethiye which we have already checked out 90tl each, a bargain. Car was sold under normal UK rules using V5, buyers had UK address so was sent there, then re-sent to him in Turkey.

Hi again terrie, did your friend sell the car using V5 like we did, we sent change of ownership to dvla using buyers uk address, once he received it back in his name it was sent here. We have had car here for a year before we sold it to someone wanting to move back to uk. We were always told 6 months in, 6 months out but wasnt true in our case.

Ditto - that details would be very useful - i would rather my trusty old van went to a good home, and as it owes me nothing if i get it sold the money goes to charity.

Hi Jim, Terrie, we have managed to sort out selling the UK registered car here officially, we just have to go tomorrow to deal with the paperwork and get the car off our passport and put onto the buyers, will let you know how it goes.  Its a lot easier than we thought and wished we had know earlier, would have made selling the car a lot easier as lots of people wanted to buy but didnt think they could.

what do they do with the cars & vans dumped at the compound ? Scrap them ? Also will be looking for a small van at end of summer season 2012 if anyone knows of someone selling one with UK plates as helping relocate someone .

How did you go on about extending the time for a further 6 months ?
Would be good if we could keep the car there for a year really.

I'd also like to know how to go about extending the six month rule, it would be good to learn how to do it. Thanks.

I don't think you can extend the 6 months - as far as I know you have to arrange all this before bringing the car in - once the car is in Turkey the option to blue plate it is gone. Starman will hopefully comment tomorrow on that - he knows the regulations very well indeed.

I have friends who drive over every year & stay around 8 months, but they take their car to Dalaman & lodge it with customs for up to 4 months. It costs them a tidy sum to do this. It's not a major problem them being without the car, as they spend a goodly proportion of their time pottering around the coast on their boat.

We extended our 6months to 1 year, you have to take your pension papers with car documents to dalaman, they then give you another 6 months, no problems and no costs.

This is really interesting to know as we would love to do the drive at least once, so we just need to show proof of being a pensioner, to whom and where please? we have a place in Turkey (Kalkan) and intend to live there more or less full time although we would probably wish to escape July & August so longer than 6 months would be ideal. Thanks

just take pension papers and car documenys to customs at Dalaman, tell them you want an extension because you are retired

I have no idea why this topic is running under this heading but while we are here please can you explain the procedure you went through to get your retirement car into the country in the first place and did you have to pay a very large bond to keep it here?

we only had car here for a year on UK plates so no bond was required. We had no problems keeping it as was done officially at Dalaman customs

Hi,was this done recently? we have just tried to do the extention of another 6 months and were refused. Was told at the last minute at Dalaman...New law from Jan.. No RHD allowed. My auntie is so upset.Last week she went to Dlm with a translater in tow to ask what was needed to get the extention..All a waste time and money, had  pension paper translated and notarised and a medical!!Armed with all this she returned to Dlm yesterday. Why ask for all this, if they already knew the change in rules!!We are totally confused. The only option now is to drive the car out of Turkey or sell but only have a few days!! It has to be out by 21st.Can anyone give us advice? thanks

We had in done last year, car was extended till end of March this year, we have recently brought a motorbike in from UK to import permanently and when we went to Dalaman to get the forms they mis-understood and thought we wanted an extention and set about doing it until we corrected them so dont know why you had a problem.

Maybe its different with a motorbike with not having RHD? Also your extention on the car was done before the January rule.

As far as I am aware, the importation of vehicles rule has not changed for years. Although I am no longer in that sector so I maybe a bit out of date but according to Turkish Turing association, the rules are the same.
If you want to keep your vehicle here for more than 6 months you can, provided you fall in to the mavi karne rules.

I have been down this road before, it is just not worth it unless your sponsor is going to pay for it all.

Had to dump the car at Dalaman. No RHD cars allowed in Turkey on a long term basis!!!
