Title: Summers Coming - Ginger Beer Plant required
Post by: usedbustickets on March 15, 2013, 13:50:50 PM
Lonely Hearts Column

Lonely English gentleman seeks the companionship of a Ginger Beer Plant.  GSH is not essential, but good flavour is. Are there any Ginger Beer brewers out there who can share their plant with me?  Willing to travel to collect in the Fethiye area.  Thanks

Just buy it from the market, no waiting for it to grow then.  ;)

I made my own recently, jolly potent too!
Easy to find recipes online, mine was just powdered ginger, sugar and yeast, plenty of feeding, nurturing, burping the bottles, and a few weeks later hey presto.

That brings back memories of my childhood when everyone used to do this. Unfortunately My Dads was b-----y awful and we poured it down the sink after a while. The Pot sink was very clean though.

we have our own ginger plant here - it just sits in the kitchen and does its own thing, every now and then we feed it up and then bottle the beer!
Marc out mid April - would get away with a small bottle I think on board in the hand luggage
he will be staying in Karagozler for a few days if you can not get any in Fethiye then can send some out with him

Thanks all for the comments and advice, and in particular Pompeylil for your offer.  I've decided to build my own plant, and will be pulling the necessary ingredients together over the next week.

Here's to a future glass of joy .... CHEERS  :)  :)  :)

Ok spill the beans please - why do you need a plant and what do you do with it?  ???

If you look on line there's various recipes, basically you start with yeast, sugar and water and you feed this mix with more ginger and sugar for about a week.
Then you strain it through a muslin and add more sugar, water and lemon to a pan, bottle it then leave it to ferment.
And drink. Carefully! It's deceptively strong!

The part left in the muslin is sometimes referred to as a plant.
You can keep this bit and repeat the feeding process... Depends how much you want to make really...
Or just start again from scratch when you like.

Here's the link to the recipe I use, very easy step by step guide, not very alcoholic, but very refreshing in summer, and only 24hrs to make (less on warmer days.

Heed the warnings.
