Title: No Turkish Lira ?
Post by: Ray1951 on January 15, 2014, 12:30:39 PM
I find this hard to believe but just thought I would share it with you anyway.  I read it on Turkey, the good the bad and the ugly website.

Just went to my local cheque centre to get Lira, apparently they can't get it any more, in simple terms she said that Turkey wasn't allowing anyone to get it here now. Sounds a bit strange to me. Anyone else had any bother?

Angela Whyte I collected lira from the cheque centre today and the girl told me I was lucky to get it as they were no longer allowed to sell. I got mine for 3.45.

Julia Batham Check out money.co.uk (go to travel money ), shows top 10 exchange rates.......and most of them you can order online for delivery to home - I always do this as tend to have best exchange rates online (unless Debenhams are doing great rates like they have the last couple of weeks)

So let me get this straight - the lira is devaluing by the day which I assume is because nobody wants it yet there is none available?

Strange.

A Post Office and a travel agents I passed today were no longer displaying Turkish Lira
in their illuminated window displays. I noticed because I went over to see the latest rates.
Will check for others now.

Perhaps the exchange agencies don't want it either? More seriously, perhaps they are keeping low stocks with regular - cheaper - top-ups?

I was trying to get Turkish Lira in Wrexham and Chester around this time last year and was told in several places that, because Turkey wasn't a popular winter holiday destination, very few places stocked it until a couple of weeks before Easter.

I bet there will be plenty of TL available in a few weeks time.

You'll need barrows to collect it from the exchange shops soon.       :)

Its cos the Lira is the Currency of a Country run by a Liar!  :)

Well you can buy Lira everywhere in UK at the moment, but of course if the value plummets further
then controls may well be exercised! I intend to buy £500 soon, just watching the rate, and then if it goes up even more I would be surprised if it got above 3.6 as the longer the current situation lasts the less impact it will have, and if it looks like he will survive and the Country isn't heading for revolution then it will stabilise and start to drop.

I was advised that Mid January (now time) may be a good time to buy.

But at the end of the day, buying foreign currency isn't too different from handing over money at the window in Ladbrokes!  :)

I have checked while in Cambridge City Centre this morning, and there is no problem with getting lira, all the travel agents, Post Office, M&S, bureaux de change etc.  Probably have enough for my holiday in June but bought a couple of hundred pounds worth at a rate 3.468 at eurochange (eurochange.co.uk) who are offering a better rate if you buy 1000 lira.  They also e-mail you when the rate changes, charge no commission, and have a buy back option.  I understand they are a nationwide company, and it certainly the best rate around today in Cambridge.

Thanks for that echogirl1, hadn't realised we had a branch of them in our town but just checked them out.

Think I'll keep an eye on their rate and maybe buy some lira early this year!

They also e-mail you when the rate changes,
Every hour, on the hour?

When the rate changes significantly, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit!!!

I was reflecting on the current rapid rate of change of the Lira. I am sorry you thought it sarcastic.

I got mine today. The lady in the Post Office said they don't stock it in the winter as there's little call for it, but if you order it before 1pm they guarantee it's there for collection in 24 hours. Which I did.

"Mystery" solved.  ;D
