I have been told (by a fairly reliable source) that some car hire firms are insisting on a photo I.D. driving licence before you can hire a car in Turkey.
Can anyone tell me if this is so, legally required or otherwise? I am happy to say I still have my tatty green licence and am loathe to give it up for a piece of plastic with my mugshot on it which is invalid without the piece of paper to back it up anyway.
Any help?

Some do, some don't.
Although, if you want to be sure of being able to hire a vehicle I'd suggest you get yourself an up to date card. I believe they're dropping the paper element of the licence soon anyway.

We weren't given a paper part to our licences when we changed to the photo ID ones a couple of years ago - it's easy to change online & they just use your current passport photo & signature & you pay online!

it is a requirement to have a photo id driving licence now in the UK anyway i believe.... without it your not legal.
-
If you read the link I posted above you'll see that it's NOT illegal to have a paper licence,,,Yet.
-
I still only have a paper one and I have hired off various hire firms in the area.
They take your passport details so they can photo id you from that.

I have hired cars with a paper license in Turkey for years with no problems. At the end of last year I needed to update my address which I had failed to do for a few years, yes I know it naughty as I only ever needed it when abroad but I was unable get a replacement paper one I had to get the newer photo ID type, no choice :(

If you a foreigner renting a car in the UK you only have to provide a photocard licence.
If you are British and rent a car in the UK you currently have to provide both parts of your licence, why? :-\
-
Because that's the way it is. Innit.
-
I have never applied for a plastic licence as probably thousands of others, so does that mean I can't hire a car?
-
Yes I believe it does - as a serial hirer of cars, I have found that you now need both parts of the new licence. Should you turn up at Avis Heathrow with your old paper driving licence, you won't be able to collect your car.

Yes, we were told this too. As my husband travels abroad on business and has used a hire car, he was told a longtime ago he must have a plastic card driving licence or he would not be able to hire. This applies particularly to the States.
I see the issue being, if you have an photograph on the license there is no issue of you using someone else's licence to hire a car.
We were told this 9 years ago by our Turkish Estate Agent when we asked about hiring a car, that we must have a photo card licence, the car hire company they used was one of the bigger National agencies in Fethiye and they would only accept a plastic photo card licence.

I have the plastic one but problem is the picture on mine is of the most miserable looking person in the world! Lol. . . it's really not me I promise. ;)

About 4 yes since I hired in Fethiye, paper licence nae botha
-
It wasn't much longer before that when you could get a hire car without having any licence with you at all :D

Thank you all for your input. It looks as though I'll have to drag myself into the 21st century and apply for a card licence. Dam it!!
