was thinking of hiring a quad bike while i am in calis but dont know the law on them.are they a car or a bike regarding the licence and can they legally go on the roads.

As far as licencing goes they're a bike. Yes, they are road legal if they have a registration plate on the rear. Make sure you have the appropriate class on your UK licence.
Make sure you're given a good quality, well fitting helmet and that you wear it. Also make sure that you have additional insurance as your travel insurance won't cover you in the event of hospitalisation after an accident.
