Has anyone else noticed the awful smell coming from the Canal, particularly behind the nil, summer breeze, bella mamas end. Its more like a sulpha smell in all the years I've been coming to Calis/Turkey I have never smelt anything like this before.
-
Yes it's pretty awful. The sulphur smell is in fact sh*t. Sewage.
I spoke to a chap yesterday who runs a business in Çalis, and many of the business owners have reported their concerns to the Muski and the Belediye.
Walking over the bridge today, the canal looked particularly black :(
-
Lots of complaints from the locals on FB. It is definitely sewage probably from the high influx of visitors for Bayram. lovely for those in the hotels close by
-
It'll be fine, as it discharges directly into the bay. Happy swimming ! ;)
-
I had heard this but where and how does it enter the canal?
-
Must admit we was on a day boat trip yesterday and it was a bit stinky to say the least.....
-
could be the pumping station on the corner of the little road up to the Pelen hotel on the duel main road , it overflowed in june when we had that monster storm and poured into the canal
-
Blueclad, that sounds about right where it starts to be honest, we drive along that road and it wofts into the car at that point.
-
When we arrived in calis on the 26 th Aug we were on a TUI coach that was full and we were the first drop off . We and another couple were dropped off at the Mutlu hotel and the mumbellings on the coach was “ was a sh_t tip “ and to be honest the bins on the back road was full , the camel stunk, and the resort looked dirty and tired .
I suppose if you have never been to the resort as we have for 15 years it doesn’t look good . Calis is a lovely place but I feel that beautiful quaintness is vastly slipping away .
-
Camels have always been a bit niffy. ;)
-
I agree the quaintness is slipping away quickly Tiger, loads of neon signs and sports bars now dont help. The canal wasn't nearly so bad when were there a few days ago thankfully because I believe it was awful over Bayram.
-
I think we all need to accept that we contributed to losing the quaint - money coming in pays for the neon lights and slick, higher quality restaurants. I love the (not so) new Kordon and restaurants like Mancero, Carikli & Yengec, but sorely miss the days where a night at the Yakamoz (RIP) was the peak of style and quality.
Anyway, back to the smelly canal...

I was told it's the boats emptying their septic tanks into the water, how true I don't know.
-
I understood that septic tanks had to be emptied 3 miles out to sea!! I have to say that I have seen traces of sewage in the canal at times and also in some bays when out on a boat trip.
