I'm thinking about buying a turkish sim when im next over there as 50p per texts to someone else in turkey is just stupid!
Is it as simple as just buying a sim and topping up?
Will i need to unlock my phone?
Do i need to buy a turkish phone?
Thanks :D

If you're going to put a Turkish SIM in a UK phone, you have to get the phone registered for use in Turkey. To register the phone you'll need to show your passport. Registration only costs 5 YTL.

However, it can take as long as 3 weeks for the registration to go through the system so you might find it easier to buy a new or second-hand Turkish phone.

You also have to show your passport to buy a SIM, whether it's for a UK or Turkish phone.

We have had a phone registered but it still got locked by Turkcell. In the end we just bought the cheapest phone we could from a Turkcell shop.
Migros was about £30 for cheapest phone a few weeks ago.
Last year we paid £40 for the cheapest Nokia you could get for about £15 in U.K.

You can go to the Fatura Bank and buy just 5 Turkcell kontors at a time if you want.

I think you have to use the phone at least once every 3 months though.

Most people get round that by leaving the phone with a friend in Turkey and getting them to send a text message every so often.

I think you have to put kontors on the phone evey 3mth, i can't remember what it is, but there's a number to phone from the mobile, and a voice will tell you the date you have to top up before, if you don't top it up, it will be cut off. Alan

If you don't top the phone up within 3 months, you are unable to make out going calls but you can receive incoming calls. You are then given a further 3 months before the line is cut off. In total you have 6 months from topping up until the line is cut off.
