Scunner is right- Turkish is a phonetic language and so if you think of primary one lessons where each letter is pronounced in it's basic form. The vowels with the dots are the ones where the sound changes a bit and also 'soft g'. The i with the dot is pronounced 'ee' and the i without the dot is pronounces as the i in 'it'. so - chalish, goonlookbashi and tashyaka. You shouldn't pay too much attention to BBC learn Turkish because it only applies if you already speak in a London or other southern Engish accent and so for some people, if they are following the advise of this, could end up saying something they did not mean. Hope this helps someone :).

ok here we go.... tashyaka and gounlookbasher (as the i is without a dot)
Yasemin3... the i without a dot is not pronounced as the i in it... it has an er sound. The i with a dot is pronounced as the i in it!!

My favourite pronunciations over the years would include the wonderfully posh sounding "gunler-bah-see" (in a Hyacinth Bucket accent), "Fettier" (one who fetties) and "Oo-zool-moo".
