Tinnitus
« on: September 05, 2011, 19:00:01 PM »
For some years I have had Tinnitus, I always put it down to years spent playing load music in the 70s and early 80s. It has vever been to much of a problem but of late it has become really bad. I know there is no known cure but understand that 10% of the population suffer this condition. If you are in this 10%, is there anything you find helps?

I have been a sufferer for many years due to many ear operations.  I now find its worse when I drink alcholol(how awful is that) or when I am on antibiotics.  The hospital gave me me a masker hearing aid  ago which masks out the noise.  I personally couldnt get on with it but it may be an option.

The alchohol thing might be a contributer, is it the days following after you have had a few drinks or is it the same day or night when you have been drinking?

I'm a sufferer too. Had it for years and can pin point the first time I heard it - drilling a whole in the wall. I stopped and thought I'd hit a gas pipe, got the kids out quick but could still hear it outside.

It's got worse as my hearing has deteriorated and I find the best thing is to try and ignore it. Red wine tends to make it worse but I can live with that occasionally.

It's annoying, it's infuriating but it ain't gonna kill me  :)

Good luck with your management of it.

I think mine is like yours Stoop. Remember as a kid when you put a big sea shell to your ear and said you could hear the sea? Well mine is like that but much louder. I have to say it has got seriously worse over the past weeks and I'm going to see the doctor just to get his opinion. I hear stories when prisoners are tortured using 'white noise' I'm sure I know how they feel.

Maybe one day you will have the unfortunate chance to find out what it's like Tony.

I ignored your remark because it's typical of those who are ignorant of this problem.

Rimms - yes go see the quack - if only to rule out more serious underlying problems. I find mine much more manageable when I have my hearing aids in. Maybe they 'mask' it a little. It's certainly worse in a morning when I wake up or at night if I wake up - it certainly stops me getting back to sleep at times.
