Does anyone know if you can do a visa trip once your residency is due to expire [?] Our residency ends at the beginning of April and as we are leaving Turkey in May we don't want to renew it.

Well, common sense would suggest that you could do this. Res Permit expired therefore now tourist visa, but maybe someone knows different.
It might be a good idea to go see the passport police, explain your situation and see what they advise. There is one guy who speaks good English, usually in civvies, not a police uniform.

That's a disappointment. I thought he'd be in a Gingham Dress, DMs and a Bowler Hat. :D

Why don't you extend your rp with two months?
Probably works out cheaper than a visa run.

Not sure if can extend your residency permit now, have heard a lot of conflicting stories. [?][?] Will pay a visit to the passport police and ask them as suggested. Thank you.  :)

Ha ha, I can just picture that and Dame Edna sunspecs. What I should have said (hindsight & 20-20 comes to mind) was, He doesn't appear to be a policeman. Maybe we got him on his day off just lurking LOL.

Ah, if he'd been in the Dame Edna specs it would've been obvious that he was working undercover.
