A day to remember
« on: November 11, 2012, 12:18:25 PM »
Couldnt see any references to today, so felt someone should!

Unfortunately too ill to attend today so had to watch it on Television at home --- at least only Mrs Meldrew to see me crying as usual!

"When you go home, tell them of us
and say "For your tomorrow, we gave our Today"

I do hope there was something happening in Calis today, even if just a few words and 2 minutes silence
in a Bar on the Prom!

Meldrew

My grandfather David Ross Lauder won the Victoria Cross whilst serving with the Royal Highland Fusiliers in Galipoli.  He was 19 years old.
When people question why I lived in Turkey, I used to say, "it was my way of punishing them" but in reality I love the place.  I am very proud of my heritage.

We had a little get together here in Uzumlu.  It was very special and I hope it happens again next year.  Very touching.

Sigh, when you think that the UK had Millions of men in the field and there were 638 VC's awarded in total and only 138 in WW2, it puts into perspective how rare they were to be awarded. What is more remarkable is so few were not Posthumous, and it must have been wonderful to have David Ross Lauder survive the conflict as well and live into the `1970's

I remember how as a very young Soldier I was so in awe of those who wore that medal on parade.

My Hero, My Soldier Laddie written by Duncan Brown tells the story of 14 Victoria Cross recipients from the Lanarkshire Area.  Lanarkshire in Scotland has the highest number of Victoria Cross winners in the UK.  Scotland has 172 Victoria Cross recipients.
It must have been horrendous getting to and fighting in those conditions in Galipoli in WW1.  It puts travelling to Turkey into persepctive when nowadays we can be there in just over four hours.
