Title: Facebook - Love it ? Hate it ?
Post by: Kevin Sowten on July 20, 2014, 16:11:45 PM
I sometimes feel that I can't tell my family any 'news' because it
has already been 'advertised' by the lovely Angela on Facebook.
Some would say "Join Facebook then you dinosaur !!!!!"
Whatever happened to phone and text conversation  :(
I'm voting for Erdogan to ban Facebook when we 'arrive'   ;D ;D ;D

I have stayed clear from ChimpBook from the beginning.  The web equivalent of the Jeremy Vile show.  Not for me thanks.

I love it.  It helps me keep in touch with my family in the UK and up to date with local happenings.

I use it (it's the only way I can get the kids to communicate).

But it's a double edged sword - it is swallowing up huge numbers of other websites, websites like this one. Without exception every day I see photos, details of events in Calis and Fethiye, warnings etc on Facebook that the poster would once have put on here, and later would at least have put on both.

In fact, huge Calis & Fethiye stories - like the recent handbag snatching incidents/warnings were put on the Fethiye group 3 times by 3 different CBF members that I noticed who didn't even think to mention it on here at all - the home of CB :(

It's not people turning their backs on CBF, these are long standing, loyal CBFers - the cause is people thinking Facebook has the bigger audience so there is no need to post to two sites. Of course it is a bigger by far but many CBF members are not on it and not posting on here leaves them uninformed.

So that's my opinion on Facebook. All the good we have helped achieve locally over the years compared with the big fat zero Facebook has done all counts for nothing. As time goes on Facebook gets bigger and we get slightly smaller each week. I am entirely convinced that soon enough I will be making a post thanking you all for your support for an amazing 12/13/14 years and closing up. And I'll still be proud of that 12/13/14 years but sometimes you know you can't compete with the big boys.

Sorry you did ask  :)

Only went on because my emails were hit and miss getting to friends in Turkey. Can now communicate with my grandchildren ( who would have thought it) as am now "cool". However, I have never "got" it. Why would you speak to someone who may be in the other room or a mile up the road on Facebook for the whole world to see.   But. As time went on, I have reunited with friends, sent special messages and kept up to date with family goings on which would have passed me by previously as I was out of the loop.

I am ashamed to say that I am now addicted, but have been fortunate enough to have not been involved or included in any on line abuse. Yes it can be useful in the right hands, but can also be a weapon of misery and destruction. Could I live without it.  Absolutely.  And would I miss it.   Yes, but I would have so much more time for the important things in life.

Added to my previous contribution is my absolute annoyance at Facebook offering me people "who I may know" and offering to be a go between for them to be my friends.  I WILL. MAKE MY OWN FRIENDS THANK YOU!

I love it, especially as a tool for keeping in touch with various family members spread across the world who aren't necessarily in the most convenient time zones for phone calls.

Yes, it has its drawbacks, but the positives for me far outweigh them.
(Been good for business too.)

I was on it ages ago and then opted out. Just recently re-joined, it's changed a lot over the last few year. No I don't want to see a list of "people I may know" thanks. I'm quite happy to be "friends" with people I DO know.

It is useful for sharing the everyday trivia and photo's but do I like it? No not really. I'd prefer to e-mail my friends but some of them "do" FB much more frequently than they check their e-mails.

Mmmh interesting question :-) I am only friends on Facebook with my close friends & family (including children & their friends) I do enjoy reading the funny posts & inspirational affirmations but do I want to see what someone is having for their lunch? Not really lol!

My mum is 85 & has contacted old school friends & family miles away who she would never had been able to track down. I also use it mainly for my business, as Social Media in this day and age seems to be a must.

Another friend has her mother living with her who has Dementia & she would be lost without Facebook as she cannot leave the house very much & keeps in touch with the outside world & finds it a great outlet (though she hates mobile phones!)

So all in all I feel Facebook has it's place :-)

Am on facebook by accident as I wanted to play one of the silly games, and going through facebook was the easiest way, however I only have a few friends (I don't want any more) and I don't want to be sent messages by friends of friends, or feel pressured to add my photo or any more personal details.  I cant be doing with bits of conversations and trivia from people I don't know.  However I do enjoy CBF and hope Facebook never is responsible for its demise!!

I do use Facebook a lot as that's where I communicate with people who say "where the flip's Calis?"
Like many others, I keep my friends circle very small but have a darn good nosey at what non-friends are saying and doing just so I can either laugh or tut at them ;D
I hope there will be a place for both for a long time to come.

Do you need to be directly involved in a car crash to know it is a painful personal experience?

Remember all those smaller independent retailers we used to see on the high street?  Then along came large national retailers such as Asda, Tesco etc and they are virtually no more.

Substitute those little shops with community based web sites such as CBF and the national retailers with Facebook.  I think we know how it ends...

There's nothing like confusing the issue by comparing apples and oranges.

No confusion on my part, nor indeed should there be on the part of the informed reader, it's a simple analogy.

I too would be gutted if Cbf went no question, however I too love Facebook,I only originally joined it to keep in touch with my son who was off to Australia for a year and then found It entertaining and loved having a good old nosey at other people's photos etc..
Fb is also a great way to post what you want people to "hear and see" myself and one other person are both having horrendous work problems and we both know for a fact that we are being "spied on" on fb and things are being reported back to our work places...(http://)
I for one hope Cbf continues for a very long time to come thank you very much for Cbf Keith  :)

I was really sick last year and facebook helped keep me in touch with all my friends and family.  I was able to keep them informed of what was happening and it really helped me through the rough times with all the messages of love and support.  I still use it to keep in touch with them as my speech is not so great now so I don't like talking on the phone.  It can be a pain sometimes when you receive strange notifications etc but, on the whole, I love it and wouldn't be without it!  I really hope CBF does not disappear...it is still the one site I go to when I need good solid advice/information  :)

For me they are completely differnt things, and I always look at both, but for advice or info about Turkey it has to be CBF. If I see an interesting post about turkey on Facebook I just use the link to access CBF, so for me Facebook serves as an advert for CBF.  But even on here topics stray away from turkey (and I have done this as well) and when that happens do people then think we might as well be Facebook? I don't think that I was just wondering?

Hamlet, so sorry to read your post.
I tried Facebook for a few months but when people I knew were
slagging off other people I knew, yet wouldn't have the balls to
say it to their faces I decided it wasn't for me. I have since seen
it cause so many problems, with people living their lives in public.
Just my take on it      :(

I use Facebook every day too and agree they are very different beasts, both possibly with a role to play. The problem is that writing on CBF tells all your Turkey loving associates about it, Facebook tells them and everyone else too - so you type to a bigger (if less interested) audience. It appears many people prefer that.

I also agree with Jan, on a Turkey related question you tend to get 30 replies on Facebook - 28 disagreeing views and 2 dangerously wrong ones - whereas on CBF you get fewer answers but you'll generally get the right one.

My real point is that Facebook is the place more and more people seem to be sharing their event details and photos of events, and sharing news (good and bad) and if that trend continues, we've had our day. That's fine, I just won't let it die a slow painful death like some 'rival' forums in the past which spent the last year having one post a day from the owner saying "Good morning" :D

You're quite right Lotty!  My problem however is that I don't really know the CBFers as well as my fb friends and the chances of most of the CBFers having any interest in what I may have to say or share are nil lol  ;)

I don't know CBF folk very well either except for what they write. I've always found it interesting and diverse. There's also something about not knowing anyone that gives a sort of freedom. I like the semi anonymity. CBF is my FB.  ;)

Agree wholeheartedly Lotty.  Can't manage without my daily dose of CBF.  Some if the drivel on FB makes me cringe.

Great way to keep in touch with our daughters as we are here & they are in Scotland & Canada!

I tried unsuccessfully 3 times yesterday to post on CBF a warning about a dangerous kettle we had purchased in Migros as 'a bargain!' - each time I got to the upload image to the post & it did all that & when I clicked post - it didn't! So I gave up & put it on CBF Facebook page & Fethiye Expats Facebook page!

A warning naming the kettle would have been better than no warning at all? Just because you couldn't upload the photo it could still have helped prevent non-Facebooking CBF members burning their house down. I think we all know what a kettle looks like   ;) Just the name and model number would have sufficed...

And for the record on this - a warning on here will be here next week, next month and next year - on Facebook its gone within hours/days and very difficult to search & find. Hence people ask the same question 5 times a day.

OK Keith I'll do it here now & you can put it in The appropriate place for me! I'd no idea how trying to make people aware of a danger could land me in such hot water! Maria :-)
WARNING - Dangerous kettle!
We bought this kettle at the checkout in Migros a couple of months ago - it was offered when we'd completed our shopping for only 5TL - thinking it might be handy to put in the top floor guest room we took it!
Today however we had a visit from a very trustworthy & reliable electrician who had come to look at one of our sockets as every time we plugged something in there the electricity tripped - this was due to our Russell Hobbs kettle dying on us - so we've been using the Raks one in the meantime.
He told us to throw away the Raks kettle as it was very dangerous - he demonstrated by plugging it in & when he inserted his screwdriver into the water in the kettle it lit up showing it to be live as it was not earthed!
He advised us to buy a new kettle & dispose of the Raks one - just felt it important to alert others who may have purchased one as it works fine but is VERY dangerous!
The kettles were offered in black or white!

I think with facebook you can use it how you like, it will still be there.

With a smaller community like CBF I think it's important we all have an input to keep it alive. It's not really fair to just come on here and take all the info you need without contributing. That's why after asking for advise on things to do I wrote a little review, it only took a few minutes.

I have not used the forum for very long but have had sound advise on hotels, restaurants and banking from people with more experience than me and I thank you all

Older members will remember that the previous CBF had a special section "Members Albums" where you could upload photographs as you do in the other place.

If memory serves it was a very popular feature.

I'm sure that the reason for such a facility not being available in this version has been posted before but I cannot remember what it was.

PS I've just had eggy bread and bacon  ;)

well known as Liberal Moderate I submit my feelings about Facebook and most "unsocial media" :-

Zuckerman should be imprisoned in the Tower and then publicly hanged, drawn and quartered! I loathe Facebook and all the handheld media. Recently took my daughter and her two children through nice scenery to spend a day at the beach --the car was silent except for tap, tap bloody tap on keyboards from all 3, heads down --- and on the way back the same until hoo-bloody-ray the batteries were flat and "unfortunately" the cigar lighters in the car were not working. (well, the fuses in my pocket helped!  :) ) People don't even telephone each other let alone write, tap tap bloody tap drives me insane(er)

Thank goodness there was no mobile reception where I took them, (strange that) and we had a good time together, we played cricket on the sand, flew kites, talked -- the kids paddled (its England its Ice water!) and life almost seemed normal pre-Zuckerman! I work in It so I am not an IT Dinosaur -- just "unsocial media" is destroying our ability to communicate properly and actually read about something apart from Wikipedia!

I HATE HATE HATE IT -- somebody beat me to it with registering a Doman name and setting up a website to be totally anti You Tube, Twitter and Facebook --- www.youtwitface.com

Facebook is another great medium for communication and information.
It shouldn't be used exclusively.
You can still ring, and Em even converse face to face.
Whilst it will harm some of the smaller imternet forums, the strong will survive.
We think CBF is one of the strong ones.
