Title: Lack of Confidence
Post by: Colwyn on March 27, 2017, 15:40:53 PM
I have to have some blood test done. I have been supplied with a copy of the letter informing the medics of this. It states, in emboldened red capital letters, background highlighted in bile yellow that, that if the samples are to be frozen THEY MUST BE SEPERATED FIRST!!

I hope their blood cell counting skills are better than their spelling.

I have to have some blood test done.

Surely that should be either "a blood test" or "some blood tests" if you're going to be pedantic about grammar ?  ;)

Well it is some test or other.

Colwyn was pedantic about spelling, not grammar.

Typo's don't count 'cos we're all human and make mistakes.

However, a brilliant little conversational about turn performed by Colwyn to "justify" the lack of an "s".

....made me smile.

Very quick, very clever.

Thank you Stuart. Actually there is nothing wrong with the original "I have to have some blood test done". KKOB seems to under the impression that "some" must be followed by a plural noun. There is no such rule in English. I guess some teacher may have told me that.

The original still looks like a typo though!

You could be right. It might be both.

KKOB seems (to "be" or not to "be" ;) under the impression..........

.....I don't think I can help with that one.

Typo.

Why is KKOB's statement followed by a question mark?

Bang to rights! Could be "seems under the impression" or "seems to be under the impression". But definitely not what I wrote.

You had to pay?

Us poor 'uns got in free.

Opportunities for an excellent education (which I duly squandered with less than impressive exam results).

Scraped through them all though - but only just.

I think they tolerated my continued presence because, as an abject coward, I ran very fast on the rugby pitch.

Cost 'em a fortune for summer and winter uniforms, rugby kit, PE kit, cricket whites, a woodworking apron, a trumpet for music lessons, summer trips to the South of France (actually, St Tropez before it was "discovered" ), CCF uniform and camps etc.

They were the worst 5 years of my life.

My eyes!!

Just had this image of a KKOB playing a trumpet on the beach at St. Tropez whilst wearing nothing but a woodworking apron.

Don't know about your rough five years. I just had a rough five minutes.

Ah well.........I suppose it does save me buying a video this weekend.

Is it a blood test or a spelling test your talking about?

Spelling. It's "you're" not "your".  ;)

"Your" is spelled correctly.

Just used wrongly.

Davybill: I was happier then and I had NOTHIN'. We used to live in this tiiny old house, with greaaaaat big holes in the roof.

KKOB: House? You were lucky to have a HOUSE! We used to live in one room, all hundred and twenty-six of us, no furniture. Half the floor was missing; we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of FALLING!

Davybill: You were lucky to have a ROOM! *We* used to have to live in a corridor!

KKOB: Ohhhh we used to DREAM of livin' in a corridor! Woulda' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House!? Hmph.

Davybill: Well when I say "house" it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpolin, but it was a house to US.
