Title: some advise please
Post by: rachel on July 27, 2007, 19:28:18 PM
I am flying out with my fiance and 6 week old baby, Emre, so Emre can meet his proud grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc for the first time lol. I have looked at the threads and see that SMA gold cap is unavailable in fethiye therefore i will carry it myself on the plane, does anybody know if it is ok to take them as hand luggage with thomas cook or whether i would need to pack them in the suitcase? also does anybody know where i can get a good steam steriliser and roughly how much they are? and finally what water is best to boil for his bottles, as im not sure which ones have higher mineral content that would be bad for him to have??? thankyou, Rachel

You could always take sterilising tablets with you if you cant get a steam steriliser out there.

SMA Gold is available in Fethiye. It's a tad more expensive and it comes in a somewhat smaller tin but Blue & Gold is available.

Steam sterilizers are expensive over here - bring one from Argos in hand luggage or just use a kettle to boil the water.

if ur already using sma gold from england then i wudnt advise u to use the sma gold from ere, appartently is made different-i was told this from the chemist wen i was enquiring. All tins av to be put in ur suitcase even the ones that may already be open, the airport took 2 tins off me wen i came bk to calis from england, also if u make bottles up before the flight they get u to taste the bottles at security.if u want to avoid this they sell ready made sma gold at boots in the airport.

Its up to u about which water to use! if ur moving out ere to live then id use just the normal tap water, they av to get use to it.i use normal water with my son and hes fine (obviously ud boil it before giving it) If your just coming for a holiday id use bottled water and then boil it.

Cant help with the steraliser as i just use a cold water steraliser from boots and add tablets! they are expensive over ere to buy!

Lisa Marie,

Keep your "fone text " language for the mobile telephone.

Here and on any other British English speaking forum, correct English is the norm and not the exception as you have demonstrated with use of the "txt" crap!!!

If you can't be bothered to speak English "like wot we do" (that is a joke in itself taken from,Morecombe and Wise).

Use the correct vernacular, if you know what that means??

Rachel,

I do not mean to denegrate your very valid enquiry, it is just a personal thing. A once famous British wartime leader said " There are certain standards below which we will not allow oursleves to slip, we are British and our language will speak for us all" (He usually smoked a big cigar).

DO NOT use the Tap water here for babies, I have done many posts on this subject, you will be exposing your baby to possible kidney problems.
The water is very high in minerals and boiling or filtration will not remove them.
This warning was given by our Turkish baby doctor who told us of babies as young as two with gall stones through drinking tap water.
Look for bottled water with the babysafe sign on the label, Turkuas is one that springs to mind available from most supermarkets.
You will find most people here even Turks have their drinking water delivered in 19 litre containers for very good reason, renal problems are very common here.
The water is perfectly safe to drink short term (not for baby though) but for long term buy bottled.
The effects of the minerals are accumulative over a period of time, one day your child might not be fine, dont take that risk.
ok guv :)

duffy2,

Please do not instruct fellow members on how they should or shouldn't post. We have an excellent team to offer guidance on how best to post on CBF - and they all have an infinite amount more tact than you.

If we need a new moderator we'll ask you, assuming 3500 others turn the job down first.

I would "respectfully" ask that members keep over abbreviated or "text" style writing for the kids forum, as a decent proportion of members can't follow it all (including me :D )

Cheers!

Scunner

How do turkish families go on regarding the water,i am sure they dont buy bottled water?
Title: some advise please
Post by: mavisim on July 29, 2007, 06:55:08 AM
We DO buy bottled water. The 18lt. variety which isn't expensive at all. In most of the villages, there's a standpipe which where I used to live was frequented all hours including after midnight. Often Turkish families would fill up 10-20 5lt platic bottles to take home. That's not to say the tap water was polluted, but the standpipe was considered a much cleaner source (Madran Su).

I drink bottled water, 5 litres is only 1ytl, then top it it up from the tap and put it in the fridge, i don't think there's much wrong with the water in Calis, and i can't see the efes company using bottledwater, so we'll all get gallstones, i reckon, and can i still say cos instead of because,or will that upset anyone, lol. Rachel congratulations on the birth of your baby. I would definatley not use the tap water for his bottles like others have said, use bottled. I think the water in Calis is ok for some of us and boiled it shouldn't be a problem. But obviously, you wouldn't want to take that chance with a baby, just in case.
Have you thought about using cold water sterilising tablets?

In answer to a few questions,
cold water sterilising tablets will not clear the minerals,
boiling will not get rid of the minerals,
more and more Turks are drinking bottled water,
It is a regional problem, look around at the high number of renal clinics in this area,
Efes is not brewed in this area so is perfectly safe to drink.
As adults you are quite entitled to play Russian Roulette with your health.
If you have children then for the sake of a few lira you can save them from a lot of possible pain.

Hi Rachel

If you have access to a microwave the best way to sterilise is to use the microwave bags (John Lewis) sell them.  You just pop bottles in with a small amount of water and microwave could not be simpler I used them for my little on last year and could not recommend them enough - just so easy and not time consuming.  In respect of water I asked my Health Visitor for the latest recommendations would advise this as they have the latest information.  As regards to SMA I took the sachets on the plane and just aked the air hostess for water to make the bottle etc.  Put tins of SMA in suitcase.  If you need any other advise please ask I hope this helped.

I would not recommend the use of tap water in Turkiye for anyone to drink. As for sterilisation of babies bottles,we always used Aventis to sterilise the bottles in the microwave.Good luck and enjoy your trip.I'm sure everything will be alright :)

you shouldn't give the tap water un boiled or boiled to babies and indeed children too many health risks. Bottled water is readily available.

You can find SMA in many of the chemists in the centre of Fethiye. Worth noting they do not sell in supermarkets. Fixed price as in UK but more expensive here for a smaller size tin. Blue & Gold is available. Chemists operate a rotation system here where one is open till late, it might be better if you find yourself getting low on powder to buy during the day as the late night chemist may not stock SMA.

If you find yourself in trouble when you are over here, just get on the forum and theres bound to be someone who can advise.

Sheets & moses basket easily sourced also mosquito cover no problem.

Good quality wet wipes are very expensive here.

Calpol is cheap (goes well with vodka) not for the baby of course ;)

Don't worry you are in safe hands on this forum. Lots of good people who know the area really well.
