Hi Just wondering if anybody had done this journey and if so how long approx does it take, which are best routes and approx cost etc. Any help / advice appreciated, thank you
-
Hi PJB,
Not done it myself, but these are the basics:
UK - Calais - Reims - Metz - Nancy - Strasbourg - Zurich - St Gotthard - Lugano - Milano - Bologna - Ancona - Fethiye.
You don't drive into these places, just follow the motorway signs until you reach them. ie, From Calais follow signs to Reims, as you reach the Reims turn-off you will see a sign for Metz. And so on.
It'll take 1 week, cost £400 + fuel + tolls + insurance.
The journey (and cost) includes two ferries (one is a two night & 3 day trip).
You will be expected to leave Turkey, with your car, within 6 months. You will have paperwork handed to you on one of the ferries which state this.
Tesco car insurance (amongst others) will insure your car for this.
Glen.

All sounds very complicated and such a long time, cheaper and quicker to fy
-
or you can do the northern route like I did and save on the ferry costs. Also try to use Belgium and Germany to save on the french tolls which can be expensive. Petrol is dirt cheap in Yugoslavia and Greece.
I did the trip in 3 days. My car still hasnt got over it and that was 4 years ago.
-
Or, France, Holland, Belgium,Germany Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria etc. about 55 hours driving each way at a steady pace.
-
Warning about Bulgaria. A friend drove through it 2 weeks ago and the border police told him that if he sees a copper by the side of the road waving him down but there is no plice car in site then just put your foot on the gas.
-
And watch out for the speed trap about 1 kilom into Serbia. I got caught and had to hand-over my passport, go back to the border and get Serbian currency from an ATM to pay the fine.
-
OMG- sounds like a right kerfuffle to me! Fraught with danger. Bet its an adventure though!
-
i think you can also catch ferry just down the coast from Venice to izzy,so Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, great sites on the way
-
Where the hell is izzy?
-
:)Izzy has gone the shops, Enough, no way would I drive,We got fined just picking my son up from Dalaman, cos we left our passport in the apart, imagine going through all of those dodgy places, Starman are you who I think you are, your experience sounds very familiar. ;).

Am I right in thinking the limit to keep your car in Turkey is now 2 years?
Tink
-
no. your car can only stay for 180 days per year.
-
are you sure?
-
Its my job to know this so yes, I am very sure.
If you are thinking of that article that was in the land of lights, well I told them the translation was wrong from the original Turkish clause after which they removed it for being wrong information.
-
I saw your post on the Turkish website last year, and also found this
http://www.turing.org.tr/eng/mavikarne.asp which might help some people,

Yes but it does not cover touristic residents. Only those working, students or those that are officially retired. It also means putting down a hefty deposit against your vehicle untill you re-export it. Also under the retiree visa it means taking your car to customs to have it impounded each time you leave the country, even if it is just a day trip to Greece. Turing says you can keep it for up to 2 years under the blue plate scheme which can be renewed for upto 2 years at a time.
This mavi plaka otherwise known as would not cover most people here and frankly is way more hassle then its worth.
The prices for the deposit are as follows:
As of September 11th 2006 the bond worked out by Turing is now based on year of car and power and not weight as it used to be. Price of bonds are below.

Also remember that you still have to pay a yearly tax and also around 160 ytl per year to Turing and also around 700 euros to get an agent to do the paperwork (21 documents needed).
I know this as I am doing it for a client tomorrow who currently has his motorbike in customs and has now got his work permit.

WE did the drive with pet dog in April/ May this year and found it very easy using the Ancona - Cesme ferry. Arrived in Calais at 9pm by way of the eurotunnel and stayed there that night. Early start and we drove across France (so easy no traffic) to Luzern in Switzerland arriving about 5pm. Stayed there that night and next morning headed for Italy. St Gotthard tunnel expect delays (it took us 2 hours) as they limit the number of vehicles using it at any one time by traffic lights. Hit Italy flew through the Milano junctions headed for Bologna and that is when trouble started as we covered 40 kms in 4 and a half hours due to traffic, road works etc and at one point thought we'd miss the ferry. After we had cleared Bologna traffic improved and we got to the ferry at 7.30 pm and were loaded at 8pm. Had 3 nights enjoyable cruise in glorious weather and docked at Cesme at 7am on May 1st. Journey to Fethiye after the 2 hours to clear customs, get your visa, have the car insured (as green card was nye impossible to get to cover Turkey)which only cost 72 ytl for the 6 months we headed for Fethiye which took about 4 hours.
The ferry was over £500 with cabin, car & 2 persons & dog but if you do not mind roughing it you can sleep on deck or have a pullman chair. We went for the comfort option after 3 days driving.
If you need more detail please email me via profile but we have found it very useful having a car here for the initial 6 months rather than the expense of hiring.
Good luck
Fi & Eric

Note: If you do take the route through Greece the border into Turkey is closed on Sunday!!
Hope your journey is less eventful than ours LOL
We did the journey in a rusty old 1991 Toyota and we made it!

Why are we even bothering with this info, he's clearly not got any sense of adventure....LOL
We drove up to Holland last year and all the way to Turkey through Ipsala border crossing and took weeks,...yes weeks.
One of the most memorable adventures we have ever undertook, fantastic.
-
The information from the Fethiye Times is excellent, we will be doing the 3 day crossing route next year.
For those considering this, if you go via Switzerland there is a large fee, it covers 1 year, for travelling through. This is not a cost effective option, see the AA website for current costs. 8)

-

-
searching the insurance web sites for insurance for 3 months stay in turkey, can get eu cover as part of package on uk insurance, got to be a solution any ideas ? cheers in advance.
-
Many UK insurance companies won't insure you past Istanbul. It's because of the Europe / Asian thing. Once you cross into Asia they regard it as "Bandit Country".
Buy Green Card Insurance at the port / border of entry into Turkey. It's not expensive.
