As you may have read from previous post I have a deposit on apt in Ciftlik, I would be grateful if anyone who has bought there could give me any general information - what are the good and poss not so good things about it :0)
I realise the local shops are Turkish, am I right? - (and my Turkish involves me scrambling through a phrase book, followed by numerous embarrassing mispronounciations)
So I was wondering where is the nearest supermarket?
Any info much appreciated :0)

Hi,
I'll send you an email later with more details but for now:
There is a small, well stocked (they have Efes LOL) supermarket in Ciflik called Mellisa. The owners are really nice and speak fairly good English. They will deliver if you ask.
The hardware store opposite stocks loads of gear but they do not speak our tongue. However a few pointed fingers, smiles and such usually gets the message across.
There is also a bakers (not yet used) and a Pide Shop/cafe. The latter is very cheap and the food is lovely.
It's not the place for a night out on the town but you can shop there and pay your council tax and water bills at the same time.
Dolmuses run to Fethiye quite regularly as well.
Where is you place then?

The very idea that shops in rural Turkey may be Turkish came as a complete shock to me too at first ;)
I spent my first fortnight looking for Budgens

Hi sniffy..ciftlik is a lovely turkish village, still very much unspoilt, there are alot of small mini markets, the main one being mellisa market(super market)There is a bakery, hardware store, electrical shops, hairdressers still only 3 lira for a cut..
pide (turkish pizza)just opened.the village market is on the square on a thursday.Dont worry too much about your turkish, they do like you to have a go, but more of them are picking up the english.

Hi we used the Melissa supermarket in Ciftlik and the chap in there spoke English very well, the supermarket stocks most things, the only thing that was a bit hit and miss was the cows milk. The bakery we used regularly and the bread was yummy and very very cheap!!

If it's a relatively large supermarket, they should stock the "Pinar" brand of goods. If they do, then the Pinar Gercek Yasam Milk is about as close as you can get to creamy milk.
It's available in green and white cartons or platic bottles. ;)

They dont stock many Pinar products, ICIM milk is a good one they also stock loads of Danone products and as Kazzyber has mentioned there is a guy in there who speaks good English. We found them cheap for all kinds of stuff including genuine Turkish Delight we paid 3tl for just over 500gms. we have been shopping there for 4 yrs now and its slowly getting bigger and better. there is a bakery down the road for fresh bread and if you ask nicely they even slice it for you

So if they stock some, they ought to be able to order-in the Pinar Milk too. It all gets delivered by the same lorry. I have tried the Icim, but it's no way as good as Pinar. You could of course get your own cow and really blend in with the neighbours 8)

The best way to learn Turkish Sniffy is by getting stuck in and by the sounds of it you are going to have to. Sometimes I wished that my place was a little more off the beaten track and by that i mean not having the luxery of English speaking Turks everywhere we go. Good Luck Sir. Oh and why Ciftlik by the way?

Hey how lucky is that - My Alaskan is pretty damn good :0)

Apologies for the back to back post (that's if no one posts while i'm typing) I should have put it all in one but I was keen to ping scunner on the back of the head, metaphorically speaking of course.
Thanks for all the info - I've copy n pasted it for future ref, including the milk carton pix :0).
Stoop its a nicholas on the conifer site. As a 1st timer abroad seems safe bet. I travelled from Alanya up and was smitten by the local scenery (that was even before I'd seen all your pics lol) I look forward to the e-amil info.
Steve - I picked Ciftlik as it has the appeal of a foreign place far from the madding crowd, the peace and quiet (and the extra room) swung it 4 me. Oh and also cos it's quite Turkishly Alaskan (apparently)
Any other information v much appreciated for my copy n paste reference guide

They do fresh milk as well and they do stock the milk in the picture - got some this week. Another fact is that the market shop at the other end of town (Ruya) is where your mail will go and you have to sort through the sacks to find it. It is run by a very nice man who will direct you to the table where you can sit and sort through.
Probably not necessary at the moment, but an interesting fact.

It was the fresh milk I was talking about, it was always coming the next day! This apart the supermarket stocked most other items and was much closer that others to Telmessos where my friend has her villa.

Milk? Find a local farmer where you can buy fresh milk off them. About 1 1/2 lira for 2 litres. You will have to pasturise it yourself - bring it to the boil, let it boil for about 10 minutes then simmer for 30 minutes. Let it cool and then bottle it and put it in the fridge (you can scrape the cream off the top when its cooled) Should then last about 7 days in the fridge.
We live in Uzumlu and found a local with some cows and get milk off them frequently.
Good luck.

Thanks Teresa
Interesting facts welcome! On that note (but still on thread..)does anyone know the population size of Ciftlik..? Also - how long it takes to walk to the nearest bit of beach... (I know this will depend on which bit of Ciftlik you're in - an average will do)
Do many people cycle, outwith heatwave season of course? (I'm thinking of getting the teenagers bikes, realise they will sulk for scooters but I can try)..
Yes I know I dont look old enough to have teenagers - oh I forgot you lot hav not seen me :0) lol
-
You can get to the nearest beach in about 20 - 25 mins, we cycle all the time to and from Ciftlik

Sniffy,
I managed to find this little snippet about Ciftlik. As far as the population is concerened if Fethiye is 60,000 (according to The Rough Guide to Turkey) I would estimate that Ciflik's population would be around 6.000.
Ciftlik is a charming rural village but still within easy reach of Fethiye and surrounding towns and only a 30 minute drive to Dalaman airport. There is a local shingle beach which is much quieter than most and ideal for a peaceful day by the sea. Ciftlik boasts breathtaking mountain views and in most parts of Ciftlik there are stunning views of the sea. There are many shops and mini markets along the main road and a weekly bazaar selling fruit and vegetables.
