Seems we have quite a few new members who will be coming to Calis and/or Fethiye for the first time this year.
I thought it would be helpful and fun to do a "Must do" thread - there is nothing worse than finding the best restaurant or beach on the last day of your holiday :)
So - what one thing would you recommend - no repeats, no agreeing, let's make a list for new Calis & Fethiye visitors.
I'll start
You MUST eat at the fish market in Fethiye - in the evening.
Next...
-
You MUST take in the sunset on the Prom - and take a photograph.
-
You must use the dolmus boat to Fethiye
-
You must go to the Tuesday Market - haggle a lot and have something to eat by the canal and stay for 4 hours!
Ian :D
-
You MUST watch the turtles in the harbour in fethiye. I am always amazed to see them. Amazing.
-
You MUST have a meal at Pasha kebab in Fethiye. Yummy
-
you must see the sunset from the Sundial Restaurant
-
You MUST take a boat trip around the bay of Fethiye. A lovely lunch, spectacular scenery, beautiful warm sea to swim in and a fantastic sunset. A great day out at about £10 per person.
-
visit Saklikent
-
Our one has been said "See the sunset from the Sundial Hotel".That is my favourite place in the whole world!
You must have a Turkish bath, and a massage, and for all the girlies (or boys!) the face mask and face massage at the Oyken Hotel was fantastic my skin was glowing after.
-
and don't forget a Turkish shave
-
Must.. visit Tlos, and take time out at Yakapark... especially in the summer months! very cool and relaxing sat in the shade and nice fresh fish too!
-
You MUST eat at Cin Bal in Kaya, lamb tandir, at the table BBQ's, superb Meze - unbeatable.
-
We found the excellent Harem restaurant towards the end of our hols, turned the corner where it is situated many times but always said lets walk a bit further down, good food and service :)
You must try the Harem :)
-
You must have a night out at Scarletts when the entertainment is on, great night
-
You must try the Sat Restaurant.
The setting and views from the terrace are terrific!
-
You must try the B52 Cocktail lounge and bar !
Only joking, you musn't ;)
-
Christ you nearly gave me a heart attack then
-
You must visit Idyin Pide and meet Cem for his humour is the most infectious I my guests and family have encountered
-
You must visit Kaya village, one of the most peaceful places I've ever come across. The views down the valley are spectacular too
-
You must take a boat trip using one of the boats from the water taxi station.
-
I meant a full day trip not the Calis/Fethiye crossing.
-
patara beach is a nice relaxing day out too
-
You MUST be prepared for something a little different to Spain, France, Lanzarote. Embrace Turkey's differences. They are great.
-
You must take the boat trip to the Dalyan Delta
-
scarletts is a must and maria's for a good english meal, recommend the steak pie
-
you must have after dinner drinks (minus shoes) in the Nomad tents on the promenade.
Ken :D :D
-
The whole area is fabulous...don't forget the blue lagoon...take the right hand road to the private beaches...much better than the paying area.....then take a pedalo around the lagoon.
Food is generally good everywhere......the fish market was great...but unfortunately my colleague was violently ill afterwards, not sure if it was the prawns....but I ate the same and was fine!!
She was ill for 3 days!! so take care!!
-
You must sit outside at one of the bars in the harbour looking out to sea watching all the boats, soaking up the wonderful views and the sun....with a pint of Efes in your hand......:D
-
got to try a turkish bath. BLISS :)
-
Try a jeep safari not only will you have a great laugh you will see some fantastic scenery
-
You must take your own food and drink with you when you return home via Dalaman airport ;o)
-
take a walk from Montana Pine (marked with red and white markers)around the side of Babadag to look at the view over and down to the Blue lagoon
-
You must take a picnic lunch and explore Cadiyanda, the beautiful cool pine forest and the ancient ruins. Peaceful, tranquil, stunning scenery, outstanding views of Uzumlu and Fethiye, a million miles from the hustle and bustle of resort life.
-
You must spend an hour or so sitting outside the Tea House in Uzumlu, opposite the Mosque. Watch the locals go about their every day life, farming, embroidery, collecting herbs and fodder, enjoy the sounds of the country - goats, donkeys and cockerels. Buy some fresh peaches from the market stalls and enjoy the real Turkey.
-
coffee at the cafe oley and a beer at the deep blue bar paspatur, Especially for those of you interested in 'decent music'.
This is a useful thread for first timers... Scunner, how about a 'must not do' thread running alongside?
-

-
Try the Megri (lokanta) choose a meal from the 'front' or off the menu, an just soak up the atmosphere, the sounds of the mosque, the music from the turkish bar opposite, people watch - its great. Likewise having a meal at one of the harbour side restaurants (especially the newer ones on the way out to Calis) at sunset - superb.
-
You MUST eat some turkish pancakes.....
Oh, and drink lots of Efes while there!!!!!!!!!
And also just sit and watch the world go by..... beautifull....
sunlover
-
You must eat at Jimmy's soup kitchen, Lentil soup with hot butter sauce, yum yum, stuffed peppers fantastic too.
-
You must take a look into Assured Estate and Interturk Estate Agents, very close together in the centre of Calis, just to get an idea of the sort of property you can get for your money because thats where the dream starts.
-
go with an open mind
go with the flow
dont expect too much
relax
and you will enjoy yourself
the people are great, the weather is fantastic, the food is great(depending on your palet)
and to finish off you can have the evenings loud/quiet/entertaining/romantic
the place has all you need explore and find your own piece of calis

You must have dinner on Kizilada private island while watching the sun set.
-
you must take time to talk to the local people, they always like to chat. The charm of the Turks is one reason many of us go back year after year.
-
Apple tea, lots and lots of apple tea!! :)
-
Great thread and a lot of thunder stolen but..
You MUST go off the beaten track to experience the real Turkey.
-
Go to a Turkish festival preferably with Turkish people - the Tomato Festival at Kumluova is a good example - lots of different stallholders, a variety of local foods, drinks and icecreams, interesting presentations, loud entertainment and often famous Turkish singers and no other Brits!!

BBB, excellent taste ! Cafe Oley and Deep blue bar? Love 'em
-
Jukebox... yes indeed! i must admit that both Atilla at the Cafe Oley and Mehmet at the DBB are both long time friends of mine, however i wasn't particularly advertising on their behalf [they don't need it anyway] both are just fine places to chill out.
Mehmet and i have just spent a month travelling around thailand... a good man without any doubt!
-
You must eat pancakes after having gone round the Sunday market and bought half ton of fresh produce and nuts :D
-
you MUST buy lots of herbs from the market then get them home and forget 6 months later which is which . So you MUST label them when you get home!
-
You must take a walk up throught the ruins of the amphitheatre and find yourself a picnic bench to sit at and take in the view of Fethiye Bay, then walk along the road for a little while and mingle with the locals, perhaps trying out the Turkish you may have learned before coming out or picked up whilst in Turkey. It all seems so tranquil up there!
-
You must check out the Calis Beach website before going to Calis to make sure you know the best places to eat and drink (and maybe the ones to avoid).
-
If you like a good boogie and refuse to grow old go to Club Bannanas and dance and chat with the real turkish folk
-
One family member must paraglide!
-
You must go to gocek and go across the bay on the freebe steam boat and visit one of,if not the best turkish baths in turkey.Walk around the bay and take in the many boats moored up and the pretty flowers all the way around the bay. This place is across the bay from gocek and theres a fantastic resturant there andl but quaint beach, recommended.
-
There we go, everything you need for a 60 day holiday :D
-
You must have a meal in the Bogazici restaurant on the promenade between Calis and Fethiye at the Fethiye end. Lovely views, perfect sunsets and delicious food.!!!

You must not eat pancakes after having been round the Sunday market, well, not from the woman whom Scunner & myself saw picking her nose whilst making said pancakes. :o
-
You must - have a drink at CAT in Calis - on the jetty protruding into the sea - watching the sun go down - FAB!!!!!
-
....all of the above.
Any first timers reading this and deciding where to start and how to fit it all in, don't worry, you'll be back!
-
you MUST at least have a crack at trying to spell and get near to the correct pronunciation of the places you visit!
From a long time visitor to Kalsh/Chalsh/Kalis err its next door to Feeta!
-
Gunlakbusi
Ganlerbarshi
Ulzumu
Uzumulu
Tashakker
Chiftlic
Chalish
Chalis
Olu Din-EZ
Forget the place you VISIT, I can't speak for everyone but if I spent tens of thousands on a property, I'd learn how to spell the place 8)
-
Anyway, back on topic...
You must go to Nif and eat freshly baked bread and relax :)
-
How far from Calis is Nif Keith? and can we get a dolmus?

UzumluH2o
Let's keep this on topic. There is a thread about the cement factory - let's keep it on there please.
I'm not going to delete the above post but any more and I will.
-
Apologies Stoop, I deleted it.
Another example of someone trying to take any topic and twist it round to their own personal agenda. Can we not have happy and positive threads without someone spoiling them?
CBF gives more pages to the Uzumlu situation than all other websites put together, yet once again, not enough for some.
Now, first visitors to Calis Beach and Fethiye? You MUST...
-
None needed Scunner! I was debating whether to delete it or not but as I'm at work I am a little short of time.
Without going through all the pages (if it's been said I apologise).........
You must go to the Dalyan Mud Baths. Great fun and it makes you look ten years younger (until you wash it off)
A full day with a trip up and down the river, mud bath, take in the Rock Tombs, lunch and a couple of hours on the beach for about £12 can't be bad.
-
sit on the terrace of the buzz bar at olu deniz watching the sun go down

AN absolute must Sue! Totally agree 8)
-
Take a trip around the Peninsular starting at the Fethiye boat yard, if driving go around clockwise as it is more comfortable for passengers not to be close to the edge of the road were there are steep drops.
The views are excellence, and there are a few places you can stop for photos etc. There are several beaches that you can stop at, but there is a parking fee.
I personal rode a cycle around the peninsular, takes about one hour, very good.
Frank
-
Before you come you must practise being chilled and be ready to accept a whole lot slowerrr lifestyle
-
Sit on a boat sailing out of Fethiye harbour listening to James Blunt.
:)After two years I still can't hear it without memories coming flooding back. :)
-
I'm the same with James Blunt I must admit.
I can't hear his weedy voice and ridiculous high notes without vomiting.

You will not spoil my memories Scunner:D
-
You must go and BBQ at Gemiler Beach! Look out for gorgeous wild flowers in April.
-
James Blunt on even calm seas would make me sick.
-
Go on a CBF party night :D :D :D
-
Like you remember ;)
-
pmsl below the belt Keith 8) :o:D
-
Cheeky bugger :D :D :D One day it will be avenged :D :D

-
I have taken details of all of this and thankyou all for your advice. Just a few days now and I will be with you with my daughter. Where is the Sundial Hotel please ?. All sounds so pretty good to me.
-
You MUST eat at Bella Mammas in Calis Beach.
Terrific Food
Spotless Toilets
Friendly Staff without being cloying or over attentive
No hassle as you walk by
-
This is all very helpful guys, but it would help even more if you would tell us where some of these things are!!
-
Get a map 8)
-
my favourite thing to do every time I come to Calis is get the boat taxi to fethiye (already mentioned, I know..) and go to the little juice bar by the harbour (just down from that big blue building), get a couple of glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice and a cheese and salami toastie with mayonnaise (or you can have ketchup in it). This is a particularly wonderful experience if you have a bit of a hangover, best cure I know!! Its also cheap as chips.
I'm back in 2 weeks.. yippee!!
-
You must have a meal at Kings Garden Restaurant in Fethiye and take in that view - stunning.
Also, you must a freshly squeezed orange juice at any bar along the waters edge in Fethiye, looking out towards Calis - bliss.
Can't wait to do them again.
-
You must take a day out to swim with dolphins or horseride on the beach ..
-
Hi Guys
We are bringing our twin 9yo granddaughters with us in June and they are keen to go horseriding and would love to swim with Dolphins.I have looked at Desperado ranch and that seems good but if I can get more info on anyothers that would be great:D:D:D

I've been coming nearly twenty years and i've never seen a flaming dolphin let alone swam with one. It could also be a bit tricky negotiating a horse around all the sunbeds on the beach. Fraught with danger that one :)
-
I've only seen dolphins twice and I'm here every day :D
-
We came to Calis for the first time last August, went on a fabulous boat trip and saw three dolphins swimming/jumping about in the sea. It was so lovely. The captain of the boat said it was the first time in four years he had seen them.
-
Not much of a captain Jules, you can sometimes see them from the water taxis.
-
I've been going to Calis for 4 years and havre never saw them
-
You won't from Scarlett's Anne :D
-
you must try jeep safari's they are a great laugh and cool you off...plenty to see its well worth the money. we go on a couple every year with a guy called ayhan havent spelt that right lol he looks like goerge clooney and he is such a laugh he makes the trip enjoyable and is a very good friend of ours. We recommend sovalye tours from hisaronu they are very close friends of ours..Helena and Halit

-
Was he doing his old party trick where he pulls his trouser pockets out again?
-
Hey everyone,
Thanks for this. My boyfriend & I are coming to Calis in just over a week for our first time. What a fab idea, we'll certainly be trying them all out :) x
-
you can swim with the dolphins @kas
-
You MUST come and meet us!!!! :-)
-
You must come to the monthly disco at the Anna Bar (1st Sat every month) for the dogs home
-
I'm sure that most people would prefer that this stays as what has been a really well received collection of useful tips for new visitors to the area, rather than turning into an excuse for a list of cheap and tacky plugs.
Ta :)
-
bbostons restaurant on the prom! lovely!
-
you must have a cold efes sat on beach outside at birlik
-
You must take a day trip to Rhodes from Fethiye.
-
hi jacqui
how much is this trip? &how often does it go x
-
Goes every day from June to October, catch the hydrofoil from Fethiye at 9.00am and return at 4.00pm cost is £55.0 for a return or if you want to stay over it's £88.00 for an open ticket.
We always book with Yesil Dalyan who have an office at the habour in Fethiye. You will need your passport to book.
http://www.yesildalyantravel.com/default.asp?id=rhodos
Jacqui.
-
You must stop at the little cafe past the Birlick with all the odd table and chairs on the beach. He's an amazing guy, who brought us sliced tomatoes, apples and BBB chicken legs, all free gratis for using his rickety sunbeds , and buying a few cheap Efes and Fanta. I felt like Shirley Valentine and loved it. We'll definitely go back there. [^]

Is the fish market easy to find from getting off the water taxi from Calis?
-
Hi, you would probably find it easier if you went by dolmus, get off at the terminus, and its just along the street.Bee
-
so many new posts from first timers thought this would be useful, i still use it having printed it all off and is in my Holiday File I bring with me!
JT
-
A Turkish breakfast at the Kings Garden restaurant is a very pleasant start to the day.
-
just sitting on the balcony, with a chilled glass of efes,on a hot sultry night, just listening to the chirping of the crickets.
(dont forget the mozzie repellent)
-
Getting soaked in a thunder storm 8)
-
Come back again
Hugh
-
You must visit ( if during the football season ) Fethiyesport football ground and watch the local team play against visiting Turkish teams of similar standard. Enjoy it more by sitting amongst the Turks, virtually all of them eating nuts and spitting out the shells :D Also hearing ... albeit in turkish... all the abusive comments hurled at the ref, linesmen, and of course the opposition :D and realising they are the same comments you hear at all the UK grounds whatever the league, but in a different language... cant wait til September :D
-
Although I've never done it because I wear the wrong kind of shoes, why not try a shoeshine from Hagi. He is the shoeshine man who always wears a Galatasaray football shirt and makes the rounds of all the reestaurants in Fethiye. He's always friendly and helpful, and apparently he is a fund of knowledge about local things.

-
Try the shoe shine guy in Calis, who recently became the Father of twin boys. He is a really nice guy and give a terrific shoe shine.
-
Except Jacqui he POLISHED my hubby's tan suede shoes lol. He realised his mistake with the first shoe and it looked like black oil had been spilled on it, so he just left the 2nd shoe. Mr Toky took it well and just laughed. Good news about his twins.
:D
-
I thought it would be helpful to bring this back for people soon heading out to Calis :)
-
Its very much appreciated Keith.

Day trip to Dalyan

I love this forum, and was so happy I found it before my first visit to Calis, which coincided with the original post on 1st Timers, I always print the whole thing off and still have not done all the things suggested -- I was going to walk naked on Patara beach but noticed everyone ran away in horror at just my Tee shirt coming off!:D
This is a brillinant idea, really looking forward to it, when does the season start there and how do you get tickets etc.?? We arrive on 7th -- cant wait!!!!
Also is this a new one? Visit the ancient Lycian Ruins at Pinara, wasnt listed in any guide etc, I have seen but they are amazing, especially the rock tombs so high in the hillside. Trying to remember but think was signposted north of Xanthos on the main coast road from Antalya to Fethiye.

-
Go to Aydin Pide, not only for good inexpensive food but to meet a true character and really nice guy in the owner Jimmy. (cem )
-
Thanks for this really helpful!
1st timer coming out on 23rd July and staying at Caretta Apts.
Had both my hips replaced 7 weeks ago so looking forward to 2 weeks of relaxation :)

you must spend a Saturday night at Merhaba bar on the seafront great night out with live music and brilliant hosts.
-
You must stay at least two months to do all the must do's. 8)
-
Ooh! Great thread. ;D
OK, you must eat at Mozaik Bahce in Fethiye and Shaka on the seafront between Calis and Fethiye.
-
you must walk along Fethiye harbour looking for turtles, I'm still ridiculously thrilled everytime I see one!
