Title: Where abouts is Izmit
Post by: Karennina on March 20, 2008, 20:56:51 PM: Just watching a programme about earthquakes (and I know I should not be!)Turkey has been mentioned, they are talking about a fault line and reckon there will be a big one in Istanbul in the future!
Was wondering where Izmit is in relation to Calis.
I am scared now wish I had not watched it.

I had better look for that earthquake link and prepare an emergency pack for when I am out in two weeks time!

The funny thing is when I bought my apartment I did not really give the earthquakes much thought, and I even laughed when I was out in October because apparantly on our complex there is an earthquake shelter and my friend I was with asked where it was and I said oh dont worry about that we wont need it and its always locked!
I was a little aineberated at the time so it seemed funny.

Post by: Karennina on March 20, 2008, 21:43:08 PM: Apparantly it is where the gardeners store all their stuff and the sunbeds etc out of season, and it doubles up as an earthquake shelter, so someone on the complex told Derek, but it is always locked so it would not be any good anyway!
Me too am a worry wort it is a nightmare sometimes.
Hope you are making some headway with your property problems.

Post by: cef on March 20, 2008, 21:50:42 PM: Karen, I don't know where your place is but, it's an 'Earthquake Shelter' you should ALL have a key! it may well come in handy for 'storage' but this should Not be at the expense of your safety, if the need arises! That's what it's there for....

Post by: mike A on March 20, 2008, 21:57:54 PM: Izmit is about 70 miles east of Istanbul just across the sea of Marmara and stands on the North Anatolian fault line, although many major earthquakes have occurred along this fault line Istanbul has been more or less unaffected.
I experienced the 1967 earthquake as I was in Istanbul at the time and there was a lot of talk of the big one that was going to destroy the city, and they have been talking about it ever since, but Istanbul is still standing, as it has for the last two thousand years, nuff said.

Derekandkaren, I have been living in Istanbul for a very long time, Izmit is just an hour down the road. I dont have an earthquake shelter, I dont have an earthquake pack. Just dont worry about them.
