Title: A new bank
Post by: Gorgeous_bird on April 19, 2008, 07:43:12 AM
Hi all

Just back from a week in Turkey. I had a few "real life" things to do whilst in Turkey including going to the bank to make sure that my account was up to date. I am with Oyak Bank. On my first visit I was told that they were too busy to deal with me and to come back and on my second visit the person I spoke to hardly spoke English and was as effective as a chocolate fireguard. I only wanted to update my passbook as was expecting money I had sent from the UK.

I didn't feel very well treated and I now think that even though it is a bit of hassle -that it is time to change banks I am not looking for interest rates or anything like that as I don't have enough cash to warrant that, I am looking for a good friendly (if there is such a thing) bank where they have some English speaking staff to help me.

Where would you suggest.

Go just up the road to the Fortis Bank. There's a young lady at a desk on the left just inside the front door who speaks excellent English.

We use Finansbank they have a few staff that speak English but one in particular is Ayse who is very helpful and efficient, sometimes we have wait 10 or 15 mins to see her but would recommend her and the bank, you can do online banking from the uk as well.

It wasn't that she couldn't speak English - it was limited - especially when I had a problem with my account which I came away with unsolved - I just felt unwelcomed which is unusual in Turkey.

Garanti bank have English speakng staff...just go directly upstairs. The new branch on the Migros road in Fethiye is particularly good. We always deal with Ali who speaks excellent english. Their internet bank is first class. We've banked with them for 4 years and they've been great.

We have accounts with both Finansbank and Garanti Bank. There is a chap called Ulvi Aktas at Garanti who has helped me a great deal and even phoned me three or four times to answer my questions about opening a new account at Garanti.

He speaks excellent English and nothing is too much trouble for him.

We were originally with Akbank who had the most obnoxious staff I have ever met.  We encountered lengthy waits sometimes as long as one and half hours with Turkish people pushing in front of us.  On two occassions we went on our interest day and drew our money out and then told it was the wrong day and we had lost our interest.  On the second time we demanded to see the manager and insisted our interest was refunded.  The bank teller accused me of altering the date in the book- now why would I do that, it wasnt even the right month let alone the correct day.  It was near the end of the month.  We closed our account the following day, and took our hard earned money to the HSBC.

Never had better service - never had to wait longer than 10 mins and all the staff know us and are always willing to help us.  Asked if we could get more interest last month and they immediatedly shut our account and opened another one with 1% more interest. If the manager is there he always comes out shakes our hands and asks is everything is OK.

To be fair to the Akbank my neighbour who still banks with them says the bank has improved.

We are with Oyak Bank - and have found Melek and Ozge very helpful.  I even email Melek now with any problems I encounter - and she responds very quickly.  She was most helpful with our setting up of our direct debit to pay our electric - and it was all done online.  She worked alongline with TEDAS - and sorted out our problems.  Cannot speak highly enough of Melek.  They even arranged our insurances - contents, buildings and DASK.  We had a block booking the one morning with Melelk with two other owners on our complex - and she sorted all three of our problems. Problem yok - as they say.

We have banked with Fortis for about a year and can't praise them highly enough. Always friendly and helpful. If you go to see Sinem Bayburda her English very good and she can give advice on all aspects of banking and insurance. She will also update passbooks without having to wait for a tellers desk to come free.

Hi Brian
One of are accounts is with Denisbank the branch is out of town the manager can offer you a better rate to get your custom as it looks good on his books we get 1% better than alper is offering and thats on 35 days not 6 weeks as some accounts.
we still draw from the local branch thats if we have all day to queue so there is no more risk than any where else not unless the banks go down like a few years ago then the only compensation is the 50,000ytl regardless of what moneys you have above this figure so be warned you don't get somthing for nothing, lucky the ytl is pretty stable @ this moment and has been for a while.
as you are guaranteed up to 50,000 ytl and if you can not afford to take a gamble it would be better to take lower intrest but open various accounts a round town. the banks say that would never happen again, the gamble is yours somthing to think about

of course there is a lot more to it

and yes you will find that bank staff out in the sticks speak english as well (This is directed at the people who think they should anyway)
