does anyone know if the snakes in the river are dangerous, last week while waiting for a dolmus i spotted 5 within 10 minutes the biggest one being about 3 feet long, they come out of the river and bask in the sunshine also last year there were two small ones in our garden they were brown and yellow the river snakes tend to be brown or black, we have also seen loads of small turtles and red necked terrapins here can anyone throw any light on what these snakes are thanks
-
:)cant throw any light on it but I can lend you a torch. Wingy what river are you talking about so I can keep away. ;) I know the land snakes can be dangerous because my daughter was bit by one in Hisonaru and had to go straight to hospital for a jab,she still has 2 little scars on her foot, and that was by a hotel pool.:P

Laffa, as much as we'd love to meet you, I suggest you stay away from Uzumlu ! We got some nasty little wotsits up there ! My daughter was walking in the Olive grove right next to our house and almost trod on a Viper - evil looking little B*gger that was. Needless to say, she hasn't been in the olive groves since. Always see a lot of black ones squashed on the road too ! Seen a few scorpions around the pool too......makes you wonder why I love the place so much really....[xx(]:( :)
-
The only good snake is a dead un, but I have seen the river snakes and they do lok bloody big.
-
:)Ooh Pooks now you tell me, we drove to Uzumlu in March, hope it was'nt your back wall we nrearly knocked down trying to do a turn, wont be going again now I know that, the frogs are big enough to work there too. they are massif.:P
-
hi Wingnut
The funny little bridge is very close to where we have an apartment. Were the snakes still in the water, or were they wriggling along the grass? I will make sure we wear heavy footwear if they appear on dry land!
: :)
-
hi Wingnut, as far as I know there are three types on snakes indigenous to the area, the brown and cream/yellow one is a viper and is venomous (straight to hospital) It has a sort of 'flat' head. There is also a black (on top)and white/cream belly, not sure about this one but the local farmers do kill it. There is also a pure dark grey/black one which, I believe, is a rat snake. Can't do you much harm but I would still avoid . Hope this helps
-
laffa i think you are mistaking snakes for worms:D
-
Oooh, I don't like this thread very much - I hate snakes. And frogs. And even worms! Hope I don't see any - I'll be the one wearing wellies from now on, just in case!!!
-
:DBelieve me Gray, I know a snake when I see one.:P

peecee thanks for the sensible reply it was a serious question, mr tibbs if you cross the bridge coming from palms side and look over to the left you will see a stagnant pond this is where the snakes slither about and the big slab of concrete below you is where the turtles and terrapins sunbathe, have a nice snake watching time wingy
-
hubbie seen a brown water snake in march when he was fishing he was home early that day
-
I asked my husband about this, he is a local boy! He says that he used to play barefoot in all the rivers streams and ponds, which of course were more abundant then, although he is not that old. He never was bitten and used to catch the snakes to take home and frighten his poor mum with them. I have however said we will get divorced if he tries the same trick with me. Seriously though if you treat them and all nature with respect you will probably be OK
-
should we stay away from the big greenish ones?[?] in the garden, and blooming fast.
-
Personally I'd stay away from anything snake like but then I have a phobia! Snakes don't attack unless provoked so keep the doors and windows shut and block any hole you think a snake might be able to wriggle through!! Hubby says he has never seen them are you sure they are not long green lizards which hubby says are harmless! He says he doesn't know of any incidents regarding snake bites amongst the locals, he says you should be more scared of scorpions!Oh what joy!!
-
Our last maintenance gardener, Omer, lost his father to a snake bite. Happened in one of the villages so probably too remote to get to a hospital on time for the anti-venom jab.
I've not been bitten by any snake although I used to catch grass snakes in Nairobi when I was a teenager. But I was spiked in the finger by a lion fish in Malindi and the pain was unbearable - had to have pain killing jabs- but fortunately unaffected by the 'poison'.
So, if you are bitten by a viper/adder, which has either the markings mentioned previously or the darker zig zag markings - get to the hospital without delay because although the venom will, generally, only kill the aged or weak, the pain will be severe.
-
Relax guys, they are far more scared of you than you are scared of them. :oMY AR*E.
-
Oh gosh I really wish I had not read this thread I knew I should not but couldn't resist! We cross that river all the time and there is a really low bridge that many a time I have "slithered" my way down the bank to use this bridge rather than walk to the big bridge, sheer laziness I know, but never again now I know about the snakes waiting for me if I had happened to fall in!
-
Pigeon......that is a hosepipe.:D
-
We are in Hisaronu and i hope i never see a snake there i am realy scared of them, that is the last time i leave my doors and windows open, realy wish i hadn't read this
-

Think he was referring to cutting things in half Laffa. Half a worm will live on.
-
Yes we seem to have had a lot more snakes in our garden this year too.Maybe they are being disturbed by all the building going on in Uzumlu!!!.
-
did u get my email scunner?
regarding photos...
doll
-
:)Got you Heather and Gray, just the thought of snakes and the like,I mean if you cut a worm in half you could still kill the 2 of them, but snakes. :o
-
Hi you guys. Haven't been on for ages, but just getting an update before we come next week. Anyone who knows me knows I love snakes. I made enquiries when previously over about the river snakes and was advised they are non poisoness and harmless (although any snake would bite in self defence).I tend to try and catch any snake I find (just for the fun of it)then let it go again so I checked before I went to Turkey re venemous snakes and came up with nothing (though some locals tell me otherwise because they tend to kill any for whatever reason). I especially enjoy visiting Calis in May as this is when the snakes are most abundant (breeding season and they can't stand the very hot weather). It's ok not to like them, but please don't kill them. Snakes (even venemous ones) do not "attack" people, but will only defend themselves if cornered. I understand I might be in the minority here.(does anyone want me to bring my
boa constrictor over?) But seriously, treat all snakes with respect and if unsure steer clear.
-
Paz
Thank you i will be taking your advice, and if i see a snake i will be gone, i do not like them but would never hurt one.
-
I think your research is wrong....there are venemous snakes in Turkey, one I think is the Levant Viper( stand to be corrected on the name as I am not an expert) :)
-
Google Search Venomous snakes in Turkey. Look for about the 4th link which is reptile.fisik.com.tr and click on that article.(for some reason I can't direct input the site?) It is very informative and lists 45 varieties in Turkey, not all necessarily in this part, of which about a dozen are classed as venomous or semi venomous. It is mainly in Turkish but you can still find a lot of information and there are several pictures to help you identify. :)
-
Just over a week ago I came across a large snake on the road just over the bridge at the end of the road from Palms restaurant. About 3 feet long and over an inch wide. All black, although didn't go close enough for a thorough examination. Did get a photo though but don't know how to add to this text. My cats often bring tiny snakes in to play with but this is the first time I have seen one this size.
-
i sent a picture to scunner to see if he could put it on the page hazel
of the one in our pool
-
I'm really glad I read this topic as it just proves that one can't even rely on textbook info 100%. I
trusted my "Turkey rough guide", which mentioned that although there are vipers they are so uncommon
that they are not considered a threat. I won't be trying to catch everything I see! I'm glad some helpful
info is coming out of this thread
-
This is the reason I always turn Doll down wen she invites me round to skinnydip in her pool ;)
Note that by picture 3 the chemicals have made the snake a little fatter in the middle, and grow legs [:o]

-
usually they will go off if they see people its when u frighten them
they turn nasty just be cafeful in long grasses
the land has been turned over so that may be while there on the move
no habitat left
-
I would be very happy to have a Gecko in my place to help keep the insects down ;)
