Title: Uzumlu Cement Factory Meetings
Post by: Firo on May 28, 2008, 08:39:34 AM
Hi all,
Things are moving on regards the court case but it is felt that a meeting should take place to update everyone on Thurday the 5th of June at the Camlik (just after you enter Uzumlu pass the 1st garage it's on the right) at 7pm. There have been some new developments and rumours going around so hence the meeting. Some of the Turkish committee will be there to answer any questions you may want to ask. Please can you all make every attempt to attend and tell all your friends and neighbours who might not be on this email list about it.

On Sat 7th of June your support is also wanted for a big protest rally in the square at 11am. This will have speakers in Turkish and then everyone will walk to Ataturk memorial. This is being held to get national press & TV coverage to keep the case profile high as it comes nearer the court date. Us expats have been asked to attend to show our support so dig out the T shirts and any banners you may have.

I hope to see you all on both dates....we are getting nearer our goal so lets keep the momentum up.

The Camlik has a great menu at excellant prices so why not have a meal at the same time.

Thanks in advance of your ongoing support and don't forget to bring your wallets & purses as we will be having a collection towards the 30,000ytl solicitors bill :D.
See you all there
Fiona

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Calis carnival is also on 7 june.

Thanks for mentioning it Smudge...The parade doesn't start till 4pm and the demonstrations displays etc start at 11am till 7pm so plenty of time after the protest march for everyone to get down to Calis and enjoy everything.
I did not choose this date, the Turkish committee did after talking to the TV & press.
Hope everyone will attend as its of huge importance to the whole area to get this stopped.
Cheers
Fi

I *bump*-ed this message up before the meeting.  Did I do it wrong?  Or is *bump*-ing not allowed?

Bumping is not allowed in 99.9% of forums - just add a few words to reply and move it - *bump* is a bit vulgar  ;)

Vulgar!!!  Wow, I have never heard it called that before.  Hmm, OK.  Will remember that but honestly I have belonged to many forums where bumping was normal.   I am not sure if I have ever used it before but in this case I thought it would help jog people's memory.

But rules is rules I guess.  (is it in the rules?)

Oh come on Mr Chairman Sir, I am sure that given the reason for the 'bump', you can allow Rinadloo to be slightly 'vulgar' just this once  ;):D

Good luck to everyone attending today.   We are with you all in spirit.[^][:X]

Listen here Pooko, I'm doing my best here :D

Bumping topics is not allowed, so instead of replying with the word "bump", just reply with something deep and thoughtful like "just reminding people about this", which is also vulgar but vaguely acceptable  :)

Don't get me wrong.  I can do vulgar.  I think I do it well too.  But in future I will only be vulgar sans the word 'Bump'.  Oops, there, I have said it again....... :-\

Now now Vindaloo, it isn't the word 'bump' that is vulgar, it's the use of the word on a forum to lift a topic :D

Thought you might like to know about the money raised last weekend (5-6 July) towards that goal of 30 000YTL that Fi mentioned.
We collected 815YTL and 20 pounds from foreigners' houses (an average of about 40 lira) - sorry we didn't get round to everybody but we were exhausted in the heat, and if you would like to make a contribution just go to the library below the Üzümhan restaurant; the people who went round the shops and businesses got two big donations of 1 000 and 500YTL, but only got 260 lira from the others; 1 000YTL was collected in incirköy, and 1 055 at the breakfast on Sunday.
This Friday, as I understand it, there's an on-site court hearing in incirköy and everybody is asked to be there, not to demonstrate but as a show of numbers.  Details of time and place by tomorrow evening hopefully.

I was at a meeting with the lawyer.  From what I can gather the court experts are setting out from Mu&gla around ten or so; so the best plan seems to be to meet at the turning for Koru köy and the quarry (near the restaurant where the breakfast was)around one o'clock, and be prepared to wait around.  The more people and the more mixed local/foreign the better.  No placards, just numbers of people.

Alec, what is an 'on-site court hearing'??!! Will it be conducted exclusively in Turkish and will there be a translator present? Thanks

Chris,
As it's a Turkish court I would expect it to be in Turkish. They are coming to look at the area & site and people are being asked to attend to show the strength of feeling against the proposal but not a protest as such.
There are a few of the Turkish committee that speak both languages so I imagine we will be able to get a translation of what is being said, but I would expect it will mainly involve the respective lawyers and the court officials.
I hope to see you there.
Fiona

I am so sorry but we all had been told different times. Its now 09.20 and we have just been called to say they are leaving Fethiye to come here now!
If you make it great but if not apologies for the confusion but the officials concerned did not give us a clear time.

Uh, I'm sorry I went to where we had breakfast, -no one there.  So I went to Incirkoy, followed my nose through to the market.  Couldnt find anything that looked like a meeting.  Retraced steps through and took a side turning and ended up back in Uzumlu by the back road.  Sorry, that's the first time I have been to Incircoy.....

I hope it went well bt its a real shame things were so disjointed. :(

Post by: alec on July 11, 2008, 10:36:45 AM
Yes, things were disjointed and I sympathise with anyone who went haring around the countryside and didn't find anyone (but you saw Incirköy for the first time and that can't be bad)BUT: in any other circumstances you'd have been happy that something started early not late. You asked what an on-site court hearing was: court officials and experts come in a sort of mobile courtroom minibus and inspect the scene - I experienced the same thing once when I was involved in a traffic accident where someone was injured.  Today they were very attentive and sympathetic I'm told, and went round looking at the quarry/factory site, the nearby olive trees, and the also nearby Incirköy village.  The fact that they were followed by a good number of people (Incirköy had organised a minibus) was a good thing.  More detailed report later.

Alec, can you tell me where the meeting was.  I thought Icirkoy was lovely, so yes I did enjoy that.  I went up a slope saw a mosque, a parked dolmus and a tea room, continued on and found a market.  in front of me was a track so I turned round.  Now I am curious.  Did the meeting move on to the quarry and that's why I never spotted anyone.

Post by: alec on July 11, 2008, 11:51:51 AM
Fiona can probably tell you more about where they went, but I think they started by looking at the quarry and factory site, then went on up the hill to look at the area more generally (that was where I picked them up).  After the experts left, there was a meeting with the lawyer at the tea room you found near incirköy mosque, where she explained what was going on and the stage we had reached.  My Turkish is not 100%, so I'm waiting for somebody to write it up and I'll relay what he says.  incirköy village I'm told collected 2600YTL, and that's the village people.

Wow!!  Well I look forward to hearing the results.  Thanks for the info Alec.  I think I might go to Incirkoy again and this time take time to really see it.  I thought it was amazing, what I did see of it.

Sorry we missed you Rindaloo but it was totally hectic this morning. About 6 cars(including ours) escorted the court officials up to the quarry. Maps were out and lots of talking took place with them by our lawyers and Urantas representatives. There was a judge and about 6 professional independant environment experts. They took lots of pictures which clearly showed the olive trees at the bottom of the quarry site. We looked into the quarry where they have dug down for the cement factory to go. It was the 1st time I had actually been in the quarry site and the devastation there is frightening and all the trees are heavily covered with dust etc. After that we went down to the olive grove where we were joined by about 30 cars, motorbikes & dolmuses. The convoy then proceeded to travel around the valley to look at the site from the road above Incirkoy. Then it was back to the road overlooking Incirkoy and then the officials left. Many then went back to Incirkoy tea house for a de briefing from the solicitor and as soon as I have the translations I will print it up for everyone to see.
I estimate there were about 9 expats (German & Brits) all the rest of the 60+ people were locals. It was a great turnout and I think the officials can not have been made more aware of the feelings against the factory in the area.
I would think it is now a case of waiting for the expert reports to be done for the judge and then it will be heard in court.
Many thanks to those of you who could make it at short notice and once again apologies for the confusion but officials over here do not have to give times and as we all have learned they can turn up when they like.
Thanks one more
Fi

At the de briefing it was said by our solicitor that it would probably be 2 - 3 months before we hear anything more. Urantas's solicitors did not turn up for the meetings! One of the Turkish committee said to one of the officials "what are we doing to our country?" and he replied he would help protect the countryside, so hopefully that is a good omen.
Most of the locals were from Incirkoy who announced it on the loadspeaker system this morning and the villagers in Incirkoy have raised 2600 ytl against the 260ytl collected from shopkeepers in Uzumlu last week! Very few turned out from Uzumlu.
We have now been advised to keep the profile high, in the press, occassionally so we will no doubt be asking people to turn out a few times in the next 3 months for body numbers. I will endevour to give as much notice as possible.
Thanks
Fi

I'm glad you liked incirköy.  I especially like the weird way the road goes in a tunnel under the mosque, and the grove of huge old pine trees in and around the graveyard.  Look out for the rollers (blue jays, green crows, call them what you will) that live there.

LOL!  Alec,  I ever spotted the tunnel.  I was frantically looking for a cluster of Yabanci numberplates and a group of people nearby.  But I will go back now and take time to enjoy it.  We have jays here regularly harassing the collared doves in our huge old pine tree.  But the nature is one of the things I take particular pleasure in.

Yes but these are rollers - about the same size as a jay but turquoise blue and they fly differently.  You can generally see one or two near the road out of incirköy, but I don't know of anywhere else they live in the area.  I've never seen them in Üzümlü or Kizilbel.

It's rather sad isn't it??  I could be (and usually am!) but I would have thought Uzumlu to be a far wealthier village than Incerkoy?  Why is it that Incerkoy can raise so much money and Uzumlu hardly anything??  Do you think perhaps that they hope the wind will blow the other way!
There were no Turks from Uzumlu today, shame.

We're glad that so many people turned out - sorry we couldn't make it (as we are in England) Really hope the cement factory can be stopped, considering the amount of damage already caused, and how beautiful the whole area is. Hopefully we can make a contribution in August.

Does Sun Express News know something we dont!??   Mandy Hughes on Life in Fethiye says " We have been told that the cement factory is not going ahead and this is being confirmed by documents that will be published very soon. Many residents there will be delighted at this news and I am happy it will conclude the long battle between the residents and the company in question ".  Any comments!!??

Total rubbish...believe you me if this was the case our lawyer would have told us and we would have told all of you.
There are rumours going around to try and get us folks to think its all over and put our feet up but they are just rumours. The courts will make the decision based on our case and the visit they made here 3 weeks ago and we have been told we should hear something in 2 to 3 months.
When we do I will imform everyone immeadiately.
Shame she didn't check her facts before printing but I guess thats journalists for you.
