Title: british people who live in Calis/fethiya
Post by: debbie on June 07, 2008, 23:30:14 PM
Hi everyone
Really need someone to talk to who has moved to turkey, how they have settled, lifestyle, pref someone who has bought a business. We are looking at renting a small hotel for now, a little like 'try before you buy'
Thanks
Debbie & Billy

If you thinking of renting it with the intention of running it as a business, my advice is DON`T, you`ll have so much red tape to cut through it will drive you mad.

Yep, that pretty much covers it. If you think you can make money running a hotel in Turkey as an English couple, best you explain to the Turks how to do it. It's not what you imagine and being British isn't an advantage in any way.

Hi Guys - Thanks for that! I have been reading most of the forum, I feel like I know you all already! We are desperate for a new life and really would like to get our teeth into something - new challenge- Were really hard working and can put our hands to most things. We have sold a residential home in the uk, so have an amount we can be comfortable with. We have looked as far as Brazil, as soon as agents find out you have a certain amount they never leave your side, each claiming to know what the best investment is! Thats why we have been looking on this forum to get some impartial advice, there seems to be so many of you living 'the dream' in Turkey there must be some way of us earning money but also having a quality of life there, we have been to Turkey a couple of times, and it keeps coming up (like when your on a diet and you see a chocolate bar and it is enticing you to eat it!)(best way to describe it!)
If anyone has any thoughts or ideas, we would very much welcome them
Thanks again all
Debbie & Billy

The Palms is one of the most successful restaurants in Calis and is up for sale, why not give that a go?

George
Ask Phil & Lou about English people running a restaurant in Calis.
Build up a successful business and then get screwed by the landlord.   :(

if anyone is thinking about a business in Turkey, my advice is Dont Bother..... we did it , both myself and the wife, hard workers, but the Turkish system just lets you down, and yes being British is no help at all, if we hadnt bought our apartment ime sure they would have tried to get that too...

Honestly, they are right.  It is just all too much.  The red tape/licences/taxes are a nightmare as are the 18 hour days you need to put in.

My brother-in-law did web design for customers in the UK. He did it unofficially from home (now my Villa) but when he decided he wanted to do more work that got him out and about and that is where his problems started.
In Turkey there are a lot of very jealous locals who think that it is wrong for Brits to work there. The red tape by all accounts is an absolute minefield when everything goes your way but when there are lots of locals complaining it will make things 100 times worse.

My advice mirrors what you have heard on here already, don't bother.

I have worked in Brazil but again I wouldn't advise it. I found it very difficult even though I was very heavily supported by my company and I speak Spanish and can get by in Portugese.

If it isn't a silly question why don't you try Spain as a starting point. It's safe and a lot less beaurocratic and well tested by many a Brit. You can tour the areas staying around while you make up your mind where you like and then rent an apartment while you look at bars and restaurants. Never take an agent or current bar owners view on takings however. If you like the place then spend time in there at different times making a note of trade.

I remember meeting a couple in Majorca who sold up in Blighty, went over one weekend and bought the first place they were shown. They had dreams of a nice little English Cafe by the sea. The area was Playa De Palma, a predominantly German area. It closed within six months.

Clearly you are doing your research but if it is your first time working abroad then stick to what is safe and save Calis for holidays and retirement.

Pete

Hi Debbie & Billy - you sound like me 12 months ago - I wanted to run a small hotel and really researched and saw a few.  Finally decided that the red tape would get me and I didn't stand a chance without a turkish partner etc...... couldn't afford to retire and was desperate to get to Calis/Fethiye to live - kept my eye on all sorts of websites and papers and have been lucky enought to get a job with work permit.  I'm in the process of packing ready to move in about 2 weeks - so my advice do your research......explore all avenues and don't give up - it's taken me awhile and lots of planning but it is finally happening. Does your uk employer allow home working?  They don't very often state you have to live in the UK and I know a few people who are working remotely from overseas locations. It's worth asking the questions :-)
