Whilst having lunch one day in June, some ex-pats on the next table were complaining about the residency charge (we were not really listening but it was hard not to hear what was being said). The lady was telling someone that the residency permit for one year was £1,000 and she was unhappy that apparently other nationalities did not have to pay that much and Germans only paid £100 per year - We were a bit surprised at this - is this information correct ?

Christie - this very useful website would seem to have different information!

Our residency cost 960 lira for 2 yrs and will soon need renewing. We have been quoted by a reliable sigorta that it will cost in the region of 1000 pounds for 5yrs when it comes up for renewal.

What does a residency permit entitle you to ?

Christie the charge represents what we charge a turk to live here the germans don't charge as much so they don't pay as much.

be able to buy cars, get utilities in your name, open bank accounts (this is being enforced in Istanbul and will come down to the provinces soon) amongst other things. Also you dont have to do the border jumps every 3 months and avoid running the risk of being barred from Turkey if you over stay your visa.

I renewed my residency permit at the end of July, I've just gone for 1 year as I'm applying for citizenship this year but need to have the residence permit in place 1st. It cost about £200 for a year & seemed pretty simple in the actual process of what you need or maybe as I've done it a few times I've just got used to it. But whatever you do if you have got residency do not go over the date when you apply. If you go over by more than 14 days you get a 3 month ban from the Country & 4 weeks is a 3 year ban! I was over by 3 weeks & had major problems, but as I have a Turkish daughter they used this as leveredge to say I could not be banned from the Country - still had to pay a fine which I did expect. Still waiting for my passport but hopefully back this week

So, if you have your bank account, phone and internet, does that mean you only need a 5 year multiple entry visa, rather than a residency visa, what is the difference, do you still have to leave the country every so often. Alan

visa is only good for 90 days. A residency permit is a different kettle of fish and entitles you to stay here up untill your residency permit finishes. Even if you die, residency entitles you to get buried here whereas a normal tourist visa means that even if you die in Turkey, you still have to leave Turkey as you wont be able to get buried here.

Do they dig you up and send you home when it runs out then:D

A normal visa runs out after 90 days, but what is a 5 year multiple entry visa. Alan
