I want to bring over a few bob to invest in a savings account to generate the money for paying the Turkish bills. So which bank is currently offering the best savings rate? Either on a monthly or annual payment basis, and of course most helpful if they have a nice english speaker to assist in getting through the paperwork.[^]
-
Most are very similar, however wait untill the pound strenghens against the lira as it is close to its all time low.
-
Trouble is, if it takes 4 month to get back up, you have lost 4 months interest, i think i would take the interest myself, and what happens if it never goes back up. Alan
-
its also how much you have to bank too
for higher rates. finance bank, fortis, garanti give about the same
go for one which has english speakers.(when you need help)
-
Thanks for the updates, but can you let me know what interest rates the banks are currently offering for savings accounts?
-
How much are you putting in?
-
Don't let anyone elese know Tinkerman! but somewhere north of £5k, subject to the kind permission of the Present Mrs Usedbustickets.
-
citibank still offering 21% on the lira.
-
That is gross though!
-
is there a web site or newspaper (online) where the current interest rates can be viewed, as they vary from day to day
-
There is no way you can find out the highest offered rate from any bank without visiting said bank. They will ask how much you want to invest. The best rate will be achieved with an investment minimum of about £50000.Teb is currently 19.50% gross.Fortis 18.50% I believe. There is no city bank branch in Fethiye!nearest is in Izmir, some 4 hours away.Hope this is helpful

alper
but over what period, 1 month, 35 days or 42 days, and the gurantee is only on 50,000ytl, so safer to have 50,000 in 2 seperate banks. Alan
-
from 27 days to 90 days I can give you thee same rate and 50.000 ytl is guaranteed for per person in one bank. If this is joint that means 100.000 :)
regards.

If I have 50,000 Lira in your Bank, I will get 19.5% interest, if your Bank goes Tits up, I am guaranteed to get all my money back, minus the interest which would take it over the 50,000 Lira ceiling.
If I have 100,000 Lira in your Bank, I will get 20% interest, if your Bank goes Tits up, I am guaranteed to get back 50,000 Lira, minus the interest which would take it over the 50,000 Lira ceiling.
It`s a no-brainer really. :D

If you have 50.000 ytl you get 19.5 and this is already under gov. guarantee.
if this amount is 100.000 you can make joint acc. with your wife and you got still gov. guarantee.
regards :)
my reference is my customers.

We use TEB, interest rate is pretty much same at most banks, goes up and down with exchange fluctuations. The good thing is there are 2 branches of TEB, one in Fethiye town and 1 near the Otogar, both have at least one member of staff who speak english. The one by the Otogar is never crowded and Efsun is very helpful.Whats more they don't charge you for receiving funds from abroad (unlike the bank we started out with which shall be nameless).
-
i am the person who you are looking for :) You should meet with me. :)
and our rates are much better than them now :)

Banker......Teb is giving 19.75 or 20% surely that beats yours don't you think.
Garanti is giving 19.75% on 29 day accounts also.
-
Teb is also giving 19% on 20000 Ytl.

I see that the Fortis shareholders have just won a court appeal ,against the takeover of the bank by outsiders, thereby, throwing the whole rescue package into disarray. Some financial experts are now saying the bank is facing banruptcy.Info from BBC financial programme.

Hi,
If you ask for an advice on which bank offers good service I can recommend you HSBC bank or fortis bank. Because bot have English speaking staff; Alper at Fortis and especially Sinem at Hsbc bank they both speak fluent English. I can strongly suggest Sinem as she can even call and inform you about the exchange rates when there is a big move! If you go to Sinbem please just tell her that Sultan advised you! That is it then!I am working in a real estate business and I take many English inverster like you to her and what I heard about her is always POSITIVE!
-
Thank you very much :) Long time not to see you :) I hope you visit soon for a cup of coffee :)
-
I would strongly reccomend Alper at Fortis bank, he speaks excellent English, he gives you his mobile number, if you are watching rates to change money he calls you to keep you informed. The Sunday before Bayram I used the ATM at Fortis and it swallowed my card, the strip was damaged.
I sent Alper a message on his mobile to ask him to get it for me when the bank opened on the Friday. He called me within 2 mins to check what had happened and which ATM I had used and if there was anything suspicous. He told me to check my account on line ( Fortis internet banking is easy to use and all in English)and call him if there was any activity and he would call customer service and cancell my card. Everything was ok but it is nice to know that someone was prepared to help out even during his holidays.

What is the latest on Fortis now they have brought the Belgium government down? BNP saviour deal in jeopardy!!!
Alper how is it going to pan out and by the way. any news on the Turkish Government decision to raise the bank guarantee of increasing the 50k per person to 100k?
-
We are also waiting for gov. about the limits. About Fortisbank Belgium, gov. is down but the new gov. will manage the bank as you follow from news banks owner is %99 Belgium Goverment and I think this is a really big power for a bank :)
-
Thanks for that Alper.
The Turkish government I thought said the announcement would be in two weeks!!!!!!
Fortis bank survives ok then we shall say, but do they honour savings agreements outside Belgium for sure? One wonders also, how long it would take for payouts to materialise? I would guess it would be years rather than months. I refer to all the banks by the way, I am not knocking yours. But this surely is another good reason to spread savings around different banks.
-
It's a question many of us are asking just now - where can we safely get a good return for our investments.
At the moment Fortis says you will earn up to 4% AER (gross) on EUR savings accounts or up to 18.80% AER (gross) on TRY accounts (does anyone understand exactly why there is such a great disparity?) It sounds as if it would be crazy not to invest YTL - however the £/TRY conversion is not good at the moment (ie. £1.00 = 2.23TRY)
Although Garanti's rates are not so high (15% for up to 25k on a TRY account) It's worth noting that with an e-Time Deposit Account with Garanti Online Banking, your deposits can earn an extra 1% interest. So for example this is 4 x what you get with the Fortis EUR account.
I don't know what rates Fortis offer for internet banking accounts, but if they are comparable or better - it wouldn't matter that they didn't have a branch in Fethiye.
-
My monthly account with Finnans matured today I got 21.5% gross last month, the new rate for the next month is 15.5% for 100,000ytl Fortis bank are offering 18.25% a difference of 260 ytl this month. The money is in a joint account so is protected under the goverment guarantee.
Mark
-
Mark, did your rate drop from 21.5% to 15.5% ? Our friends also had a new rate today from Finans of 17.5% on less than 100ytl, same as last month?
-
yes Tink that is how much it dropped, I have just checked on line as well
Mark
-
interest rates are really low in all banks and I can say we are serving nearly the best rates for now :) with the best coffee of the town :)
-
strange...
-
What is strange good rate or good coffee :)
-
why one would get a big reduction for having over 100,000tyl and one would keep the same rate for less than 100,000tyl on the same day.
-
What is your rate now?
-
please read previous posts for KareokeMark and my reply
-
I ve seen your reply about your friends If yours is the same you can have better rate here .
-
mine is much higher
-
If you send an email I can make you an offer
-
:D No thank you, I am very happy with Ayshe at Finans Bank and the service I get there, and she makes a lovely coffee ;)
-
Good luck sir :) May be one day :)
-
I went to Finnasbank this morning and spoke to Ulas he was very helpful I asked him to explain why my rate had dropped to 15.5%.
he told me banks give introductory rates (a sprat to catch a mackrel). I closed my monthly account offerd at 15.5% he could then offer me a new monthly account at 17.25%, when I told him the rate at Fortis he made a couple of calls to get me an even better rate, maybe up to 17.75% I am waiting for clarification. I like Finnas bank and Fortis and at the moment want to keep my money in seperate banks until the goverment guarantee changes.
The moral of the story is which ever bank you are with do not just accept the new rate when your monthly time deposit account is up.
Mark
-
Which one do you like more ? :D
-
18% without trying at HSBC.
-
%18.25 without trying at Fortis with Alper difference :)
-
whats the rate now read somewhere its dropped to 13% in a week, looks like my dream o living over their has took another knock.
-
It depends to the amount and the bank. We can offer %16.75 for more than 50.000 ytl
-
Alper what is your best rate for 200000TL.
-
I have savings in Finasbank (Fethiye branch)and have wondered do you go upstairs to talk to someone about your account? It always seems very busy when I've gone in.
-
Yes you can go upstairs, the girls all speak good english and are very helpful with advice.
-
Hi Kevin,
I can offer you 16.75 now. :)
-
Sent you an e mail Alper.
-
:)
