Title: Best Offer from Banks for Savings
Post by: usedbustickets on August 23, 2008, 12:32:36 PM
I want to bring over a few bob to invest in a savings account to generate the money for paying the Turkish bills.  So which bank is currently offering the best savings rate?  Either on a monthly or annual payment basis, and of course most helpful if they have a nice english speaker to assist in getting through the paperwork.[^]

Trouble is, if it takes 4 month to get back up, you have lost 4 months interest, i think i would take the interest myself, and what happens if it never goes back up. Alan

There is no way you can find out the highest offered rate from any bank without visiting said bank. They will ask how much you want to invest. The best rate will be achieved with an investment minimum of about £50000.Teb is currently 19.50% gross.Fortis 18.50% I believe. There is no city bank branch in Fethiye!nearest is in Izmir, some 4 hours away.Hope this is helpful

but over what period, 1 month, 35 days or 42 days, and the gurantee is only on 50,000ytl, so safer to have 50,000 in 2 seperate banks. Alan

If I have 50,000 Lira in your Bank, I will get 19.5% interest, if your Bank goes Tits up, I am guaranteed to get all my money back, minus the interest which would take it over the 50,000 Lira ceiling.

If I have 100,000 Lira in your Bank, I will get 20% interest, if your Bank goes Tits up, I am guaranteed to get back 50,000 Lira, minus the interest which would take it over the 50,000 Lira ceiling.

It`s a no-brainer really.   :D

If you have 50.000 ytl you get 19.5 and this is already under gov. guarantee.

if this amount is 100.000 you can make joint acc. with your wife and you got still gov. guarantee.

We use TEB, interest rate is pretty much same at most banks, goes up and down with exchange fluctuations. The good thing is there are 2 branches of TEB, one in Fethiye town and 1 near the Otogar, both have at least one member of staff who speak english. The one by the Otogar is never crowded and Efsun is very helpful.Whats more they don't charge you for receiving funds from abroad (unlike the bank we started out with which shall be nameless).

Hi,
If you ask for an advice on which bank offers good service I can recommend you HSBC bank or fortis bank. Because bot have English speaking staff; Alper at Fortis and especially Sinem at Hsbc bank they both speak fluent English. I can strongly suggest Sinem as she can even call and inform you about the exchange rates when there is a big move! If you go to Sinbem please just tell her that Sultan advised you! That is it then!I am working in a real estate business and I take many English inverster like you to her and what I heard about her is always POSITIVE!

I would strongly reccomend Alper at Fortis bank, he speaks excellent English, he gives you his mobile number, if you are watching rates to change money he calls you to keep you informed. The Sunday before Bayram I used the ATM at Fortis and it swallowed my card, the strip was damaged.
I sent Alper a message on his mobile to ask him to get it for me when the bank opened on the Friday. He called me within 2 mins to check what had happened and which ATM I had used and if there was anything suspicous. He told me to check my account on line ( Fortis internet banking is easy to use and all in English)and call him if there was any activity and he would call customer service and cancell my card. Everything was ok but it is nice to know that someone was prepared to help out even during his holidays.

We are also waiting for gov. about the limits. About Fortisbank Belgium, gov. is down but the new gov. will manage the bank as you follow from news banks owner is %99 Belgium Goverment and I think this is a really big power for a bank  :)

Thanks for that Alper.
The Turkish government I thought said the announcement would be in two weeks!!!!!!
Fortis bank survives ok then we shall say, but do they honour savings agreements outside Belgium for sure?   One wonders also, how long it would take for payouts to materialise?  I would guess it would be years rather than months. I refer to all the banks by the way, I am not knocking yours.   But this surely is another good reason to spread savings around different banks.

It's a question many of us are asking just now - where can we safely get a good return for our investments.

At the moment Fortis says you will earn up to 4% AER (gross) on EUR savings accounts or up to 18.80% AER (gross) on TRY accounts (does anyone understand exactly why there is such a great disparity?) It sounds as if it would be crazy not to invest YTL - however the £/TRY conversion is not good at the moment (ie. £1.00 = 2.23TRY)

Although Garanti's rates are not so high (15% for up to 25k on a TRY account) It's worth noting that with an e-Time Deposit Account with Garanti Online Banking, your deposits can earn an extra 1% interest. So for example this is 4 x what you get with the Fortis EUR account.

I don't know what rates Fortis offer for internet banking accounts, but if they are comparable or better - it wouldn't matter that they didn't have a branch in Fethiye.

I went to Finnasbank this morning and spoke to Ulas he was very helpful I asked him to explain why my rate had dropped to 15.5%.
he told me banks give introductory rates (a sprat to catch a mackrel). I closed my monthly account offerd at 15.5% he could then offer me a new monthly account at 17.25%, when I told him the rate at Fortis he made a couple of calls to get me an even better rate, maybe up to 17.75% I am waiting for clarification. I like Finnas bank and Fortis and at the moment want to keep my money in seperate banks until the goverment guarantee changes.
The moral of the story is which ever bank you are with do not just accept the new rate when your monthly time deposit account is up.
