Title: Bad News and Advice Needed
Post by: Lakers on January 07, 2009, 21:03:31 PM
Hi everyone and a happy new year to you all.
Just been informed by our maintenace company that our apartment has been broken into.
The burgler had entered our property by damaging the window frame and forcing the lock.
We have been informed the apartment is now secure again, though we want to improve our security to prevent this from happening again.
The property has the usual pvc windows and french doors, have anyone experienced something similar and how have you fixed or improved your security, incuding local companies or tradesman who could help.
We are really upset that our small place in the sun has been entered by someone else and look forward to any advice.

Get some window grills fitted.

And window locks...
If you have grills fitted ensure that the screw tops are spot welded so they cannot be unscrewed to gain access at another time.

Very sympathetic Tinx

You can get secondary lever deadlocks fitted inside. They are almost impossible to force, and if you managed it you would have created a hell of a lot of noise and taken quite a while to achieve it - both undesirable to a burglar.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Thks Scunner, I like the idea of secondary locks as this would not impact on the appearance of the property. can these locks be purchased in Turkey or who would I need to contact someone to fit. Do these locks replace the existing or are thy additional and are fitted to the frame and to prevent the window being opened.

I have been quoted at approx £8 per window by the Maintenance company, though I have no idea on what type of locks they are proposing thks again

Keith for someone as stupid as me can you describe this type of lock and how it is fitted and where it could be obtained etc. Many thanks.
Also I know some people fit additional locking system into the floor. How do these work on patio doors.

That's why I had them done, I can't bear the thought of living in the sun behind bars.

£8 sounds like a management company price, get yourself down to the lock guy on the back road in Fethiye - do your deal and save 25%ish on that  :)

They are additional to the existing locks, complimentary if you will  :)

We have dead locks on the doors but opted to put an extra hinge on the opening side of the windows. Simple system, just screw the hinge plate onto the window frame beside the handle and the other bit onto the window. The pin is then put in to lock and removed when you want to open. Very secure and is hardly noticable. Purchase from any of the hunderds of window manufacturers in Fethiye. Remember to do the doors and windows upstairs. Spiderman is alive and well and living here.

We had an attempted break in on Christmas eve, our neighbour disturbed him and he jumped off the first floor balcony (her place not ours) Apparently the police thought he tried our place first (foot prints on the wall) but he could not climb the wall to our balcony. He got on next doors balcony by using the ground floor aparts window bars as a ladder.
Anyway, we have all taken extra security precautions, we did not relish the thought of living behind bars either, so have had extra, what is in effect dead bolts fitted, 2 to each sliding door, they are not too unsightly as they blend in with the frames. They also prevent the doors being lifted off, another way silent access can be gained. These cost 15TL each fitted. The only way now to get in is to break the glass, I don't know if anyone has seen how hard you have to hit a double glazed unit to break it and the noise is like a gun going off, so would attracted unwanted attention.

I was recommended to use the Locksmith opposite the Dolmus garage (effectively the street which runs "behind" Erin Spot".)

His name is Atilla , and I was very impressed by his attitude and his work.  I thought what he charged was reasonable and he gave sensible advice.      He fitted more secure lock barrels on some doors, security turn locks on windows and steel pins on sliding patio doors.

I had additional locks fitted onto all my windows and doors, they are like handles in white to match the UPVc windows and your turn them across from the frame over the window or door. I've 2 per door and 1 per window and think it cost me about £100 for about 14 in total fitted. Are these the same as some of you have mentioned?

The internal pvc window and door latches that Atilla uses are excellent, they cost 15 YTL each (that's supplied & fitted), you need 2 - 3 per window/door depending on the size of the frame. With these in the locked position, there's no movement in the frame whatsoever. Much better and less obtrusive than having grilles obscuring your view and works out much cheaper too.

On the debate regarding window bars or turn locks , the one big difference is you can lob a brick through the window and get in if you don't have  bars.    We don't have bars so I'm not advocating them ... just poining out a feeling of security is relative .. You could do both to be sure ;-)

When we had Atilla out a the Villa we had a balcony door which had no key.   I was gobsmacked how eaily he opened the lock with a "jemmy".  He recommended we fit locks which were much harder to "pick" on vunerable doors (ones with easy acccess).  They weren't too expensive for the (relative) peace of mind :-)

we too have had Atilla fit the window locks & bolts to our patio doors. When we first came to live here we were broken into the first winter & lost a great deal-we learnt the lesson the hard way :(-so we got bars & the locks fitted too.
Like everyone else we are very happy with his workmanship & prices. The locks & bolts are hardly noticeable & well worth having. Just wished we'd had them done right away! Now we recommend them to everybody! :)

Hi

Really good advice on locks, however, can I ask is it the norm to change the locks as soon as you become owners of property?  Asking this because we are about to move in to our apartment.

We are going over soon and need to get extra locks, but I have no sense of direction at all- is Atilla based in one of the 'new' brick built shop units or have I got the wrong road completely.
Thanks,
Jan

Hi everyone, thank you all for your advice and recommending Atilla, my maintenace company would like to know the shop name or telephone number, if anyone has this information please can you forward.
In the next few days we can fit the locks and prevent this happening  again.

Regrds and thks again

Good advice Slartibartfast. We used same locksmith (think Scunner also referred to him) to make these same changes and his prices and service is good.  You can also buy the window locks yourself from 'B&Q' next to the Citroen garage.

We have also fitted every exterior door on our villa with inexpensive audible alarms. We brought some over from the UK but they can be brought at B&Qs (5 for 10 lira). White, small and effective. Could also be fitted to windows! :)
