Have just returned from our holidays and we have discovered an alternative to driving all the way.
We found a ferry that went from Igoumenista in Greece to Venice.
It was like a mini cruise with very good amenities including a swimming pool that we declined at this time of year ;)
It left Greece at 7am and arrived in Venice at 7.30am, local time,
the following day. You can then drive onwards or choose to spend a couple of days in Venice.
When we added up the overnight hotels, fuel, tolls and taxes of the overland route it worked out to be only a little more expensive and certainly more relaxing.
If you are bringing a dog over with you to Turkey the kennels were very clean and well set up and much better than the Turkish company ferry that we used from Ancona to Cesme, which was a deck locker/store room so the dogs were locked in at night.
After driving back overland through snow blizzards and terrible roads(in Serbia and Bulgaria especially) we will take the ferry every time from now on.
It took us 1 day to get to Canakkale, crossed border at Ipsala the next morning into Greece and then a days drive on empty motorways to reach Ipsala.
Hope some of you find this useful info.

Thanks for this. Do you still do this trip? We thought it sounded great and might well give it a try. How do you book that ferry? Is the driving route still the one you follow?

We did a similar trip last Christmas but got the ferry from Bari to Igouminister that time. The ferry was supposed to leave Italy at 1.00pm and arrive in Greece at 10.00pm' but it did not leave until 3.00pm and arrived at 12.30 am. In winter time you can just turn up and pay at the ticket office at the port. To book online, and to see the timetables, do a search for Anek Lines which is the Greek shipping line we used.

Thanks. That's great.

Sounds like you enjoyed the trip! Which ferry operator did you travel with?
We did this journey a couple of years back and traveled on a Anek-Superfast (http://www.ferrysavers.co.uk/anek-superfast.htm) ferry and we where very pleased. It was good to be reassured about the pet kennels too, they where very clean and the staff very flexible about our visiting times.

We also use Anek lines...
