Its nice to see a new park area gone in just b4 the sefa motel,we certainlt need some rec facilities up here as it is a well pop area with a real lack of money being spent. It was just a shame the other day to see 13,14 year old boys on "baby swings",that are now dangerous to go on.Ovacik needs some money to come its way for such things, and roads, street lighting etc.At least fac like this are a step in the right direction.
-
I'me with you on that one Tony,I reckon we should all pay the exorbinate council taxes as they do back in Blighty, then we could have a Darby and Joan club up the village and play some Bingo.
Anyway, what are you doing watching little boys playing on the swings,I'll tell your Sonia when she gets back. :).
-
I for one dont want to see are taxes go up....improvements over the years have gone on....where in Turkey....if you want it to be like Blighty, many off us dont, then there is an answer......i wont be leaving thats for sure :) :) :o

The roads are a mess yes, however, I believe the reason they have for the last couple of years, only been patched up instead of being done properly is that there is a new sewerage system in the offing, and possibly more electrical and water works to be completed. I am told that after all of this is done, the roads will be finished off properly. Not much point really doing it all just to dig it up again.
I have been here for 4 and a half years now, and have seen many improvements...more parks, street lighting etc, but Rome was not built in a day...these things take time.
-
Perhaps you should have bought in Calis! Not so cold in winter, new roads, good drains, few electrical failures, new bar fronts in the main street etc etc.(only joking,no offence
-
improve the roads and you get more traffic, pavements are more important and walkways

Many of the pavements have been repaired and improved over this winter, and also new pavements bult on at least one side of most roads now. They are getting there.

They certainly are getting there, a big improvement on pavements this winter and culvert drains under the side roads to...not all...but there getting there.

I suppose it is easy for us to say more money should be spent but where would it come from? Maybe an ex-pat tax so as not to burden the locals.
David

EPK Tax ??:D:D:D ;)
-
Maybe a tax on the tourists so as not to burden the expats,or we could all downgrade and move down to Calis. Joke, honest.: :).
-
I'm pretty sure that the taxes paid by buinesses and home owners/renters is more than enough to pay for the work that needs to be done, it's just a case of getting it done. Like I said before, these things take time, and you can not expect it to happen overnight. Personally I have seen major improvements in the 4 years I have been here.
I think expats pay enough here already, and tourists already say the area is getting too expensive, so please lets not give them reason to stay away.
-
I agree tourism tax would have a negative affect on visitors to the area.

Do ex-pats pay a higher tax than the locals?
-
No expats do not pay more than locals (sorry that was misleading) it was just that someone suggested an expat tax, but they are already paying council taxes, and with water and electric bills rising all the time, and the interest rate on savings going down, things are already tight for many (locals too) and think it would be unfair to choose any one particular group to tax.

No, but we do have the burden of residency charges (about 500.00TL per annum).
-
Yes Minnimoo someone did suggest an ex-pat tax, but i think a better tax is that all people that do not live here but do have property here, wether villa or apartment and rent out there propertys pay DOUBLE tax..half the tax to the goverment on income earned from renting there property and the other half to the council for better improvements, sorry, no quicker improvements, that way people that dont live here can moan on about the lack of improvements or quickness of improvements and leave the rest of us that live here, who are happy with the present improvements, in general, to continue to live in peace and harmoney .......yes of course im joking...but an ex-pat tax has got to be a joke to..hasnt it Davidzz:D:D

Brian, for every day that you spend your Lira, and typically pay more than the Turks, you are already paying an ex-pat tax! You may of course be more than happy with this, but it's a fact that is difficult to dispute. The very fact that you are living in Turkey, and own a property is due to it being a tourist area (myself included), and in the short, or long term, foriegn tourists will always pay more for everything. Despite who you know, and how many years you have been living in harmony ;)
In general, all of the Fethiye area is improving slowly, as it should.

Just to draw some conclusion on this topic, indeed there is work being done in the area. And yes ,the main sewage system would make putting down proper roads at this time a waste of money. But rec facilities, particularly for saucepans, decent street lighting( we've had six break ins and attempteds by us,and its as black as newgates knocker),and paths so that I can wear me heels when going out( oop's!) would be a good start.Indeed,I have got 12 residents living where I am to fill in Street lighting application forms, and with a turkish buddy/neighbour of mine, dropped them into Tedas.Be lucky.

I must admit I like the place how it is/how it was so I do not see the need to increase revenue to pay for the facilities mentioned. My suggestion of who should pay was mearly based on comments of those who want roads and facilities like they had in England. I don't know anyone, who has visited Ovacik, that has ever complained about the facilities. Thats why they return and presumably why some decide to move there. I would agree with a percentage of rental tax going to the municipal council but to double the tax would lead to increase rental charges which would be a stealth tourist tax. Would someone visiting the area really notice the difference in facilities? I think not. I could not really tell, off the top of my head, what facilities have been added in the past 5 years, does not mean there has not been any, its just not as important as the love I have for the place and the people.

Well said davidzz!!!!!!!
I fell in love with the area 10 years ago & the more it becomes like Blighty the more I will be looking to sell up & move on to pastures new!!!!!!
-
Bloody Hell Tony, what are you on about?,saucepans? what bloody saucepans
if you have'nt got any I'll pop some round.
One of the reasons we have'nt some of the facilities that has been mentioned is the fact that a lot of business taxes are not paid, you know yourself during the season you suddenly get a receipt for your drink or meal, why?,because the jungle drums have beat out the message that the tax men are coming round inspecting.I'll say no more.
One way of raising a bit of revenue is to have litter officers issue a on the spot fine to the donkey heads who chuck empty beer bottles and cans about,or a modesty fine on the ladies who strut about with next to nowt on,a mega embarrassment, especially when they're built like a brick built you know what. :).

Dave and Bouncer,I love the place too and have been coming for ten years and bought 6 years ago.I love the ambience and dont like the way its becoming touristy. It would be nice to see english peoplo coming out and trying more than egg, beans and chips washed down with four efes's, but they dont, and thats why there are less and less authentic turkish lokantas in this area. The facilities I was on about, street lights, paths, roads, kids parks, are not the sort of thing that will detract from Ovaciks flavour. As I mentioned,my area is black at nite, the road has been washed away, and burglars are avin a field day.My nipper along with the turkish nippers around me would also benefit from a few swings, etc.I'd hate to see it turned into sarfend -on-sea here, but that was not what I was saying if you read my first post.Be lucky.Tony.
