Title: 20 Lira Haircut and shave!
Post by: tinkerman on June 10, 2009, 05:58:57 AM
My nephew was charged this yesterday by the robbing git on the left hand side just down from dolphin crossroads towards the beach, I might pop my head in there today and 'have a word'[:(!]

Things like this really wind me up, I don't mind paying a bit over the odds, but taking the P**s is another matter. Thanks for the warning Tinx, I will continue to use my usual place up in Gunlukbasi.

Also have a place like this in Hisaronu charged 20tl just to cut a 2 year old childs hair, when asked why so expensive for a child, the answer was because he was a child.

Gordon went to this same Barber when his usual one was closed, on the odd occasion when he used this one he was charged approx 7-8TL.

He went to pay this particular day and the barber wanted 14Tl  when he asked why the increase he was told petrol had gone up!! ??  Gordon stood his ground gave him the usual amount and walked with the owner shouting at him in Turkish that he was a thieve.

Pot, Kettle and the colour black?

It always struck me as quite rich that those over there who con, when rumbled have nothing to say to defend themselves, so attack. By pointing out their con, you become the one in the wrong - how dare you question their honour and honesty. When caught out, they shout and get aggressive, and hope to embarrass the 'victim' enough that they would rather get away and let the con happen than stay and fight.

...And this isn't the first time I have heard of such ripoff activity from this barber. As Rimms says, the Gunlukbasi one is a better option, also the one on the road that leads to Seaside Villas & the Dolmus terminus at the far end of the prom.

I've used the one on the back road near the dolmus station. He does a good cut and shave and will burn your nasel hair and ear hair as well as offer to squeeze your spots.

NOwhere near 20ytl!

Do the barbers not have a pricelist up in shop like most do in UK.If there are no pricelists could people post the price they pay at relevant barbers so we know what to expect & only pay local rate not yabinci rate.

When we are in Calis, my good lady and I take a trip up to Hisaronu, we browse around for a while and Sue (my partner) has her "holiday treat" which consists of hair wash, cut and blow dry, eyebrows shaped and a pedicure. She loves all the pampering!! lol. Anyway the total charge for all this is approx 34 lira (money well spent in my opinion) She is in the salon a good hour and half so gives me chance to sample a few efes in the bar across the road while I am waiting.
Sue has used the same salon for years now because she likes the way they cut her hair. She has tried other salons but was not impressed with the cut or the price!! (can't remember which ones now tho)
The salon is owned and run by two sisters and they have a number of employees working for them now having expanded the business over the last couple of years, they have the unit next to them now as well.
If anyone goes up to Hisaronu and fancies a bit of pampering the salon (Rosies) can be found by the mosque up the little hill to the side.
They also cater for men as well by the way.
Obviously it is not worth making the trip from Calis just to have a haircut, taking in to account of the Dolmus fare but it does make a nice change for a few hours out and about and having a bite to eat in the abundant choice of eateries there!

What goes around comes around, as the saying goes.

When I broached this subject replies were less than sympathetic, Tinkerman and Scunner not being the exceptions

Interested to see if I was being hysterical I have been conducting a straw poll on prices for a shave. Karaculha Saturday market 2.5 lira and 3 lira. Ovacik and Hisaronu 4 lira, 5 lira and £2 at Simsek (well it is Ovacik). Gunlukbasi 4 lira and 5 lira. Fethiye 4 lira and several at 5 lira including the one near Eren Spot who has electric vibro-massage chairs (steady!!) and the very upmarket Maxi-men. No sign of the 10 lira shave Amanda!  And of course the survey wouldn't be complete without comparing prices in Calis. Denlis barber 50 yards from the roundabout charges 4 lira for a shave.

I also feel I need to respond to a couple of posts. Wallaces assertion that

clearly shows a disregard for what living on a pension entails. It's not such an easy life and 2 lira is not such a trivial amount. I hope you don't find the need to count the pennies when your time comes. Brianthegardener thinks 7tl is about right for Calis if we're daft enough to pay it. I realize we should have asked the price first (thanks for the 'simple' advice Scunner) but it is something that my hubby does every week and didn't think about it. We paid up because we hadn't asked and certainly shan't be going back. With a tip for good service 6 or 7 lira is fair.

So to sum up. 7 lira for a shave. No flaming cotton bud, no ear and nose trim, no neck shave, no cream after shaving and no massage (all are normally included) I am even more firmly of the opinion that we were ripped off and we now know where to go in Calis for a shave.

Lucinda

Forgive me Tinkerman if I fail to find any sympathy with your position.

7 lira still isn't bad for a shave! That fact won't go away Lucinda...

As philrose says, "there is a lot of difference between a shave and a shave and a haircut". Given that the price of a haircut is normally about twice that of a shave that would put our experiences firmly on a par.

If by "lurking" you mean logging on to CBF and reading the topics but only occasionally posting then I am guilty of that, along with a large number of your other page viewers I would imagine.

As my straw-poll indicates 7tl is excessive for a shave. Just ask Tom.

It simply begs the question of why your replies to the same set of circumstances were so different and you didn't tell Tinkerman

How about asking the price first and saving all the grief.  I think that 20 Lira is a rip off but compared to the UK it's probaly a bargain. I pay over £10 in the UK for my hair cut ( and it literally is a hair)  seriously though I get really miffed when I continually hear Brits boasting that they were in the market and got the Guy down from £5 to £3  Shop around but be prepared to share the wealth folks. . . .

Hubby paid 17 lira for a haircut and a shave when we were over a couple of weeks ago.  He was thrilled with this price (about £7).  He even left the change of a 20 lira note as a tip!  He pays about £10 at home just for a quick cut, and the job is done in a few minutes flat, with all the usual idle talk ("you going out tonight?"/"been working today?"/"going on holiday in the summer?" etc etc).

In Calis, for his £7, he was pampered just like us women are!  He was in the hairdressers for about an hour, and said it was the most relaxing hour of his life!!  The haircut was good too.   :)

It was the first time he had had a haircut and shave in Turkey, and he can't wait to come back in August, where he will happily pay this price again.  I suppose if you live there, you've got time to shop around and find the best price.  I guess you pay what you feel happy to pay, and if it keeps him happy - £7 is well worth it.  :D

You`re avin a larf Jules  :o
The next time he goes in there it will be 20 lira and he`ll still expect a tip.
one of the main reasons prices are going up and up is because of tourists paying the extortinate prices and STILL leaving a tip.

We tip if we're pleased with the service.  If not, they get nothing.  On this occasion, hubby was VERY pleased with the service.   :)

If they try to charge 20 lira next time, they get no tip!  Simple!   ;)

I cannot understand how being charged roughly £8 for a shave and a haircut can be a con. It can only be a Brit who would have the nerve to say that in a foreign country.I for one would and have been more than happy to pay that because in my opinion you dont get much better than a Turkish haircut and shave. Back here in my local town I payed £8 for a haircut just 2 weeks ago and thats the average.I didnt get a free massage or a flame thrower in my ear either. Those extras in Turkey cost nothing.I wont even talk about the superb shave you get in Turkey either. Conman I dont think so.

The cost in the UK is not relevant to this topic. The cost compared to what a Turkish person pays is. Using your logic you can pay 4 lira more for your lager than the rest of us and sit there grinning at the fact it's less than the £3 you pay in UK bars.
