It's that time of year again, the strawberrys are in abundance and the pimms is on ice, yes it's Wimbledon!
Not sure how many of you are tennis fans but I follow the results all year round.
Who do you fancy to win this year?
In the mens, I think the final will be another match up between the ferocious power hitting of Nadal and the artistry of Federer. I actually think that Federer will be supremely confident after his win in the French open and Nadal is reputedly struggling to get get fit in time due to problems with tendonitis in his knees. In addition to those two, I think maybe Englands own Andy Murray could possibly make a grand slam breakthrough. He has just won a grass court tournament which will add to his confidence.
On the womens side, I think it could be more wide open but I think the most likely outcome could be a final between the Williams sisters with possibly the reigning champ Venus edging out little sis Serena.
Venus has not had a particularly good year so far, but if she can get through the tricky first few rounds where everybody will be out to stop her, she will start to grow and grow in confidence as she has before .
I'm not sure about the world no 1 Dinara Safina or the French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetzova as they haven't really proved themselves on grass yet. A possible a challenge could come from Elena Dementiava, Jelena Jankovic or new Danish prospect Caroline Wozniacki if they get on a roll! Not forgeting Maria Sharapova who is starting a comeback after a bad shoulder injury.
Lets hope the weather keeps good, even though is now a retractable roof on the centre court, it wont help the initial backlog if everywhere is rained off!
Who are your tips , runners and riders?
Ps, H before you blow a gasket, I know Andy Murray is a Scot.! :D
-
Nadal now out of Wimbledon. Anyone want to nobble Federer, then maybe more chance of a British win?
-
I think maybe Englands own Andy Murray could possibly make a grand slam breakthrough
OK I will bite. you can have him but you have to keep him if he loses too.
And I want it in writing ;)

I still think that Federer will claim the title this year, he's desperate to win at least one more to pass Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slam titles. This would make him the greatest player of all time without doubt. It's the best opportunity he will ever have with Nadal out injured.
-
I don't care if your English, French or Turkish, get on your feet and applaud Andy Murray:D
-
Isn't that interview by the BBC the most ridiculous thing you have ever seen :o:(
-
I didn't see the interview but I'm delighted that Murray has won because it brings him closer to a match up with my hero Roger Federer who will edge him out. Fed has to win this tournament to be confirmed as the greatest player of all time and I dont think he'll let anything stand in his way, including the young wipper snapper Murray. ;)
-
Murray showed his colours in a Portugal shirt against England.

Murray is something like 6-1 up against Federer :)

Strange how Andy Murray does not seem to get the same hype from the UK media as Henman did - or is just my imagination ????

It's certainly is your imagination mate. :D Have you been living in a bunker? It's flipping Murray mania! All over the papers, it's the main topic of the Wimbledon TV coverage everyday! :o

That won't matter on the day ( if it happens). Federer is running nicely into cruise control now!
-
Great win by Andy Murray last night, lets hope he can make it all the way.
It's time a Brit/Scot won Wimbledon.
-
I'm thinking that the other Andy is the danger man - he seems to be on a mission and I see him in the final with you know who!
-
Oh! that's good to hear !!

I agree with you, I think Andy Roddick could well be a serious contender to both Murray and Federer but I honestly dont think he'll win. Not sure whose half of the drawer he is in though.I need to check it out.

You could well be right JB but it will be no disgrace to lose to such a majestic player.
Greatest player of all time ?. Possibly. I would have loved to see Federer v McEnroe or Borg (my all time hero). Different eras I know, but what a match that would have been.
PS Oh to be a young wipper snapper again (or even whipper snapper) ;)

The tag of greatest has to be decided by who wins more grand slams and as you probably are aware Fed is equal with Sampras but one more slam would make him the undisputed greatest. Thats why I think he'll beat Murray but I'm sure that Murray will bring the trophy home to England one day!
-
Let's just wait and see if Federer reaches the Final. I feel an upset in the air. :)

There would be two upsets in the air, him and me! ;)
Feds got a 6ft 10in Croatian to get rid off and Murrays got an ex French open champion, Juan Carlos Ferrero to knock off today!
Ps, Braveheart, in my paper today , 5 full pages devoted solely to Murray and every news bulletin on GMTV this morning featured Murrays match today. Not one mentioned Federer, it's as if he's not there ! :D
-
I am sure Fed is devasted on to be mentioned on GMTV ;).
Two great performances by both today I understand.
-
Should be a great final if they both manage to get there. My money is on Murray to make it 7-1 against Fed.
Small matter of the semis first though.

Cant see either Murray or Fed failing to get through to the finals and then my money is on the Swiss to win yet another grand slam. It's what he does better than the Scot.

There's always a shift in power at some stage Jukey and this is the time I think.

He is a true champ and I cant see him letting this chance pass him by. There's so much at stake.

Unfortunately a lot of the top ladies players nowadays are crap on grass.Lets hope it's a great final, they are wonderful to watch when they are both playing well! I still think it will be big sis again !:D
-
Hard luck Murray but what a performance by Andy Roddick!
Also, well done to the Fed, still on cruise control and swatting aside Tommy Haas.
Maybe now the press and journalists will actually have to acknowledge that there is a player at Wimbledon called Roger Federer and he is in the final. !
-
Very disappointing but I doubt he'd have beaten Federer in the final. Maybe next year [:o]
-
It's sad, but he is only 22 years old so he will come back next year. Quite put a damper on our barbeque tonight... Very hot in Aberdeenshire, thank goodness.
-
Money and mouth spring to mind - should have gone to see Mr Ladbroke!

Can you explain that post to me please.
No doubt that Murray was beaten by the better man on the day. Roddick served brilliantly and the rest of his game was very solid.
I thought Murray was a litle too tentative. Id like to see him going out more aggressively from the start of a match.
Cant see Roddick beatng Federer. I only hope he does himself justice in the final, he deserves at least that.
-
oh what a shame that Scottish chap got knocked out in the semi finals.

Well of course it will happen eventually, everyone starts to decline, even me and thee, but as the thread is about Wimblebon and that is now, my point was the power hasnt shifted.:D
-
Good luck today Federer! It's all in your hands!
-
What a fantastic match!
Fantastic effort by Andy Roddick but what a performance by Roger Federer!
Now officially the greatest mens tennis player of all time! :D:D:D:D
You've a long way to go Murray but good luck !
-
What a tedious game, tennis at its most boring, boring, boring.
Such a shame.
-
You obviously don't understand tennis then Mike.
-
Sorry Scunner, but I do, only too well,
and watching game after game just waiting for someone to make a mistake
is about as tedious as it gets.

Yep, thats sport Mike:D
-
Nonsense, sport is much more than that sad display.:(
-
Have to disagree with you Mike. I thought it was a great display of two very talented men showing tremendous skill over a sustained period, each not willing to give the other an inch in striving to achieve their goal.
The most impressive thing for me, other than Federer's wonderful achievement of course, was the way Roddick treated one of those two imposters. Splendid.
-
What two imposters H?

Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg who were sat courtside! ;)

Its funny H, but I saw two very talented men showing tremendous skill over a sustained period, each not willing to go out on a limb, take a chance or try anything different.
boring as sin.
-
Oh I see, cheers. I thought I may have missed a couple of streakers when we went out :D
I thought it was a superb moment when Sampras arrived and received such a warm greeting from the fans.

Pity he couldn't show respect to the players by getting there on time. ;)
-
Only people with real class know how to get a full round of applause :)
-
I have enjoyed the BBC's coverage, I think it's been superb, BUT there have been moments of total madness.
1. Interviewer asked Roddick before the Final that "if he plays his best tennis, does he think he will beat Federer". What a stupid question, if he didn't think so, why the hell would he be there.
2. Summary on the News a short time ago...presenter wonders how Murray would have got on in the Final against Federer :o:(
-
It ws good to see how the crowd enjoyed the match and intersting to see great players such as Sampras, Borg and Rod Laver make such comments as saying the match was one of the best they had seen and a wonderful display of tennis. Praise indeed from people who know what they are talking about!
-
Mike, can you please inform us why Pete Sampras arrived late. You must know as you have chosen to interpret it as a sign of disrespect [:(!] To add to Scunner's and Jukebox's assertions that you don't understand tennis, I would go further to say you don't understand sport and it's concepts.
-
I read these quotes about the match which confirmed that I was watching the right match! ;)
The final between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer had everything.
They were absolutely two class acts out there on Centre Court. - Tim Henman
In one of the most heart-stopping and unforgettable finals seen in a grand slam arena, Federer held his nerve for four hours and 16 astonishing minutes before finally subduing Roddick 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 to claim the trophy he cherishes above all for the sixth time. - The Guardian
In one of the most gripping matches of his storied career, Roger Federer finally created history by surviving the longest fifth set in a Wimbledon final, and an astonishing serving performance by American Andy Roddick, to win a record 15th grand slam title. -The Age
-
I have to agree with Mike to a point - tennis these days seems more about power and playing defensively from the back of the court. Grass is made for attacking tennis and net play. To me there was nothing more exciting than watching the likes of Macca getting to the net and his opponent trying to lob or pass him.
Yes it was a good match but like most tennis these days it just lacks that extra excitement that net play brings.
That's why I never watch clay court tennis - unless I can't sleep ;)
-
Yes but sadly for Mike the days of Fred Perry v Mr Chumley Warner are long passed.

Ken as you have opted to join the chorus of disapproval at my remarks I find it it sad that you, with others, feel the need to assert that I don't understand sport and it's concepts just because I disagree with you.
I played Basketball for ten years in a local team, was a young gymnast, played table tennis
to a good level and was for years a seeded player in the British Carromm association, coming fifth in the last all England final that I played in.
This, of course has nothing to do with yesterdays game, I do not dispute the skill of the players, but a defensive game won on who can serve the most aces makes for Boring, Boring tennis and this game was disappointing in the extreme.
PS.
I neither know or care why Sampras Turned up late.
"Yes but sadly for Mike the days of Fred Perry v Mr Chumley Warner are long passed."
As long as the likes of Lleyton Hewitt is around we will still see some good passionate
tennis games. ;)

Believe it or not Scunner, there is a 17year old british junior prospect with the name Tom Farquharson :D

Most memorable Wimbledon Final for me was Stan Smith v Ilie Nastase in 1972, must confess to looking up the year though.
-
Most memorable final for me was in 2004 when Maria Sharapova beat Serena williams, was always good to watch maria ;)

I enjoyed that but mostly for the surprise of the form book being turned upside down and the favourite getting beaten!
I can do without the grunting though ;)
