Cant anything be done about the bloke in fehtiye who owns a boutique who rips people off when they change up money,my dad tried to change up money based on 2.39 as he advertised in his window but the guy tried to change it based on 2.30,so many people have complained about him, cant he be stopped?
-
Yes go to a proper change shop
-
You could try making a complaint to the Zabita police, you'd need someone who spoke Turkish though with you I guess. If enough people reported him, perhaps he'd consider giving up his sleazy, underhand life of little cons.
But, as Rustythecat says, what do people expect when they change money in a clothes shop. Sorry but that's the reality here.
-
Walk about 50 yards & go the the bureau de change on the corner or 100 yards & go to any of the banks. Simple really
-
Where is this guy?
-
Whilst the banks on thewhole do give the best rate,if you do not have an account at the bank you choose to change cash in you may find the rate is slightly lower!Same with turkish atm cards, some banks are working together, some arent,so ask your bank which will charge you and which dont.good luck
-
He's in Colins clothes shop near Finans bank and the Change shop on the corner
-
It's a wonder he's got away with it for so many years. I suppose he feels invincible.
-
Cennet, he is sort of opposite Carrefours. Always lurking outside the place trying to lure you in his den....
-
Use the silver jewellers on the left hand side just after the 'ex' dolphin roundabout, he offers good rates and is 100% honest.
-
Rimms I totally agree with you. The shop is Onur Silver and the owner's name is Gurbuz. We go to him all the time as he can be totally trusted.
-
Yes, we used to use Onur Silver and he always gave us a good deal. We have a Nationwide card now, so don't need to change money anymore... We used the guy in the clothes shop a couple of times when we first visited, and my husband used his calculator to check the deal, however, I always thought this guy was creepy and once we read about the rip offs on CBF we did not use him again.
Jacqui.

Definitely gets my vote too if you want to change money in Calis. Acroos the main road from Joseph's Bar.
I was thinking, if you don't speak Turkish and you have a problem with someone like the conman at the clothes shop, it doesn't matter. If he's trying to rip you off, speak to whoever you are with in quiet or fast English. Just make sure the one word he definitely hears is ZABITA. On hearing that you could well find the conman will change his attitude, because they really don't want them turning up. Will work anywhere.
Today's valuable Turkish word: ZA-BI-TA, make sure you know it ;)
-
Acroos? :D
-
Yes, have a drink in Joseph's Bar then take acroos to Onur Silver to change your money :D

Strange that you are saying that Rimms. When you have actually been telling people to go to this very same man.
-
I'm confused...
-
Reason: Telling people not to change their money in a clothes shop then recommending a man in a silver shop? :D

We have used this chap in the shop for the last three years....I can honestly say that we have had the money exchanged at the correct rate and never been ripped off. He counts it out infront of yoy....and believe me I recount it and do not leave the shop until I am happy. I am surprised at the topic about him. Im sure each and everyone of you are right but I must say we have had no problems in the three years :)
-
ah that's it, you need to take "yoy" with you and all is fine...:D
-
You need to get out more if all you can do is A "spell check" each topic on a Saturday night< bless........so sad!!!!!

Mystery solved, I give anyone staying in my house a list of 'useful tips' on this I list all the places I know that change money, about 2 years ago this guy in the clothes shop was on that list. His name has long since been removed.
So rwr is probably someone who has stayed in my house, but also someone who did not tell you the full story. The section on Changing Money in my 'useful tips' document concludes with this statement in bold letters;
( Tip ) always take a calculator and work out exactly how many lira you expect to get for your money, you will be charged a small commission so ask how much you will get back before you hand over your cash. There is a calculator in the villa.
So if you follow my instructions it should not matter who you use or where you change your money, unless of course you're thick!
-
I've never paid commission
-
Is this shop on the same side as Mangals and in between Mangals and the road to Scarlett's?
-
no it's in Fethiye Heather
-
Oops!! that is why I had trouble placing a bank :-\
-
If he stayed at your villa why didn't he just say who is is and that he stayed at your house? I'm not comfortable with rwr, and wasn't from his first post believe it or not. Once again someone who gives no details, i.e. no name, no introduction, hotmai/yahoo type email address, the ususal vague profile thinks they can snipe with anonymity.
The rules are you can be controversial, but you should provide details so people can at least know who you are.
I am suspending rwr until he provides his real name, real email address and decides to make his next post his introduction. As he won't be able to post in the mean time, he will need to contact me - admin at calis-beach co uk.
I'm not anti-anything, I think those with something to snipe about should tell us who they are. You don't even have to make an introduction post on CBF these days, but if you are going to become aggressive or controversial you will be sent there to do so. Then you can be aggressive or controversial if you wish, within the usual guidelines.

I think the fact that he has been made the subject of previous posts should demonstrate that he is not 100% kosher. It's great that you dont appear to have been ripped off but like I've said previously, I would not consider changing my money with someone who may or may not attempt to scam me. There have been far too many reported instances of this being the case for me to want to cross his threshold.
-
My feeling too, I've never been ripped off by him, I've never used him - but I've read (and heard) of plenty enough incidents to ensure I never will.
-
Me too, I don't even go in his shop to look at the clothes.
-
in reply to karenr's post, i too have always used this man..
HOWEVER...
what you see on the calculator and what you actually recieve IS usually correct (unless he's trying to con you twice, which apparently isn't unheard of)...
the con is, as has been mentioned, you don't recieve the board rate but slightly lower (dont quote me but i think he says the board rate is for credit cards).. this isnt ususally mentioned unless you ask and his fingers go that fast over the calculator keys, it is easy baffling to those who arnt too great with exchanging and foreign currency. my mum has been coming to calis for 10 years and still cant work out lira to sterling.. bless her!
another way he works it, as i believe has been mentioned on here before is that if the board says for example 2.90ytl/£ (two nine) he offers to round it up to 2.10ytl/£ (two ten.)
again, that can easily sound like a better deal to those who arn't aware.
I have always double checked and have only had to argue the rate once, after informing him that i used to work in exchange and told him i had no porblem taking my business elsewhere if he wasnt going to play fair, he relented.
I now change my money in calis, even though he's never managed to con me, i dont see why he should get my business when so many others arnt so fortunate. I urge others to do the same....
he should have "qualified con artist" on his desk rather than "trainee millionaire"!!
-
My friend who is well known to Scunner. Used this guy one day last week with no problems as he had calculated how much he should receive back. However on going back a week later he was short changed by 90 TL. When pulled up about it he said"oh yes sorry" and gave him 50TL. At this point my friend told him very firmly that he wanted ALL of what he was owed and what was offered. Maybe This guy thought he had lulled him into a false sense of security the week before.Big mistake trying to con a Yorkshire man.!!
-
i have changed money with the guy in fethiye,, he tries to confuse you by counting out the money extremely quickly with lots of hand gestures and chat inbetween to confuse you. if you actually work out exactly what you should get b4 you go in for the change, and then count it back to him B4 you leave the counter you can actually come away better off,as he cannot go back on the exchange rate he advertizes wich is always higher!! as he doesnt bet on people doing this. i agree though for the unsuspecting tourist/visitors he is on a winner.
i also recommend gurbuz from onur jewellers or the guy who hangs around the dondurma icecream palour on calis beach front.. never been given a bad deal by either of these men. :)
-
Can someone please explain WHY they go to change money with this bloke when they know he tries to rip them off? I dont get it. It's one thing giving advice on how to avoid him scamming you but why the feck do you go to him in the first place? Am I missing something here?
-
its to warn other people of him,and the dangers of con men who try to rip off people who are not used to the lira

It's still not answering my question as to why people use him in the first place?
-
Especially as that area has plenty of other places that will do exchanges.
-
I can only speak for myself but - It's handy to where we live. Often a slightly better rate than the office / banks up the road. No queues. And I ask him the rate first and count it back in front of him so have never been conned.
-
He is a shyster, he advertises a certain rate and when you confirm the amount it should be he says its for credit cards and the cash amount is always less, its simple really, if in doubt dont use him, end of,
-
And I bet he shafts those who are unfortunate enough to use credit cards.
-
We have to ask ourselves a question here... If this guy can offer better rates than the Banks/Exchange Offices how does he make any money? Simple, he gives some people a good rate and cons the rest, and who knows what the percentages are, but they must be really good for him. We used him about 3 times, we were not conned, however, after reading about him on this forum we would never use him again, as we know he is conning people. But as long as members of this website know he is defrauding us Brits, and they still use him, he will still be laughing up his sleeve and his sleazy business will continue. Time for us to stick together and get rid of him.
-
Hi Jukebox.
In answer to your question as to why people use him for currency exchange, not so far answered in this topic, I would hazard a guess.
1. People who have used him were satisfied with the exchange rate they got from him, or did not do their sums so did not realise they may have been ripped - off. Or
2. Not every visitor to Fethiye wishing to change money has read the comments on this site or even been aware of the dangers of using a money exchange backed by a legally accountable organisation.

I don`t think that is correct.

I think it makes perfect sense, as the opposite of the correct point :D

Sorry Crabbit. I missed out the word "unless" before Legally backed...etc

I think jacqui is right, its not that we use him its about warning people not to use him,i wonder if he has seen this topic
-
I think I know who everyone is referring to ... Is this the German bloke who has the "Trainee Millionaire" sign on his desk. I used this guy last year and he tried to confuse me with exchange rate until I produced my mobile and used the calculator in fornt of him so he could see what numbers I was entering. He eventually gave me the rate I expected. I definitely wont be using this bloke again....... EVERYONE PLEASE BOYCOTT THIS SHOP .....
